Lately, NHTSA has been so critical of Teslas in general and issued recalls left and right for various things. I'm surprised they haven't forced Tesla to do a recall for this as it could be a safety issue when trying to change lanes using a camera with a glare. They've issued recalls for lesser problems (in my opinion). This is a GREAT video...very helpful, thanks!
I personally wouldn’t consider this a safety issue which is probably why there hasn’t been a recall issued. We’ve done just fine without blind spot cameras for decades and it isn’t a necessity, I’ve only owned 2 cars that have done this. If you don’t look over your shoulder you’re asking for an accident to happen anyway, tesla even tells you the same.
The chrome is removed easier using a heat gun and a nylon trim tool. The thin wide nylon end will let you pry up carefully after you have heated the trim. You need to use acrylic tape and preferably an adhesive primer. I used the same tape I used on my spoiler. 3M 06384 is the black tape and the primer is LLPT 94 Adhesion Promoter
Thanks for the video. Very disappointed that it's not a recall. My service center only charged me $19.50 for labor. The estimate originally had the chrome trim, but I don't want it. Saved $10 per side. It was $143 for each repeater.
Thank you so much for posting this. This has been really bugging me and your video explained it perfectly. Great footage and still shots and lots of good info including the repair cost, part numbers, and comparisons.
Thanks for the video. I am having this done on my 2018 with the chrome trim. Costs are $10 each for chrome trim, $145 ea for repeaters and $11 each for labor (Monterey, CA) - $328 out the door. I also had them replace the 12v battery $88 and $22 labor while I was there.
After tesla guru video, I go to tesla service to buy 2 side cameras. Guys there want to know why, I show the pictures with the fails like you have, after one day I got an appointment for changing on warranty ( this is in Norway). The chrome part I have to buy if I want, is not free :))))
Thank you for making this video. I think I will have a Tesla SC replace mine next time I'm in for service. I can live with the cost you showed. It's a small problem, and it's hard to be mad at Tesla, as the side repeater camera view was a 2021 Christmas present.
I’ll have to test this, I didn’t find the new function for the repeater view on turn signal to be very helpful as you have to look at the center screen and take eyes off the road. More distracting then helpful, for me. But I could see if it worked well at night.
When activating the turn signal at night, the blind spot warning image will display a glare that obfuscates the view of approaching vehicles? File a complain with the NHTSA to force Tesla, once again, to do the right thing.
It’s not a required safety feature to pass inspection. It’s a nice to have feature- but not required. It’s working as it was originally intended on the date of manufacture.
I really appreciate this video. I was looking to replace both my cameras because the chrome trim is starting bubble and was curious if the newer versions were indeed compatible.
Yes, there have been numerous revisions, but they are all compatible. Like in the video, replacements don't come with the chrome. But it can be added either from Tesla or a third party.
Using a heat gun to soften the adhesive under the chrome trim would have probably been good too. I don’t agree that this should be a warranty fix. Showing the cameras while the signal was activated was an added feature that the original cameras were not initially designed to perform. So they function as they were designed too on the date of manufacture. If it was needed to pass inspection- then it would be a safety recall. It’s not. It’s just a nice feature. It makes sense as a retro fit though.
It blinds cameras that are crucial for the functioning of FSD for about 50% of the time while the blinker is on. Cars were sold with “FSD ready hardware” from the start, with the claim that only a software upgrade would be needed. The computer was already upgraded to HW3 free of charge if you had ordered FSD, because it turned out that the original computer was not actually fast enough. I think the same thing should apply here - the original blinker hardware design was not actually FSD ready.

The nice thing is if it does become a recall item, I will be refunded the cost. Tesla has done that for other recalls.
Often times the safety recalls are initiated voluntarily by the mfg.

Yes, I didn't think through the removal process. Heating it is the way to go.

I find that Tesla labor charges differ between service centers. I hope it works well.
@@MTNRanger That's so odd.
@@WilbertIsRandom Same with prices for things like tire rotations: I've seen people listing a fairly wide gap in prices at service centers.

Yes, if you had the 12V for four years now, it's due to be replaced. Mine gave the warning last November.

Good for you! Tesla seems to be inconsistent on the service policies depending on location.

Thanks, very informative!
I'll just live with it as I can still tell well enough if the lane is clear even with the light leaking
Thanks to Tesla gurus for an extra $ 335.16 to fix the problem they caused. You're very kind. 😂

I added the part number to the description: Left 1495864-20-D, Right 1495865-20-D
Will probably do the fix in the future.

@MTNRanger so under the chrome is the normal black? i just replaced the camera and it had the chrome so i had to get it WRAPPED lol
Funny, right? I didn’t know that until the service tech showed me the replacement cameras.
Tried this on my early 2020 model 3 and there is no PCB exposed under the two holes I drilled, almost looks completely hollow inside.
Interesting, I supposed you have a variant!
Leave it tesla to charge you for a known factory defect. I swear, it seems they just REFUSE to do right by their customers.
