  • In today's video, we discuss the quest titled Caught In The Hunt in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. If the player finds themselves in the city of Bravil, they may hear rumors of a woman named Ursanne Loche who's husband is missing. Inquiring about it will lead the player to an orc named Kurdan Gro-Dragol. Kurdan will then instruct the player to travel by boat to a location named Fort Grief to retrieve an artifact in order to see Aleron Loche come back home safely. Once at the fort, the player learns through Aleron himself that now we are trapped inside the fort and are victims to a sick and twisted game where hunters pay Kurdan to hunt fellow humans. It is here the player needs to find a way out of he fort, all while being hunted and trying to save Aleron. We discuss theories like why are there other skeletons and remains within the fort if Kurdan claims to have them removed, and how does Cadlew Chapel tie into all of this? Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe!

    The fact that this quest references the arena makes me wonder if it was developed before they decided to only have one arena in the game (unless she was insisting he went once a week from Bravil to the Imperial city to bet)

    • @sonicxskylar7864
      @sonicxskylar7864 9 месяцев назад

      Are you meaning that you think they had arenas in every city? Because the IC and Kvatch are roughly the same distance from Bravil, and Kvatch has the only other arena in the game

    • @sonicxskylar7864
      @sonicxskylar7864 9 месяцев назад

      Worded that weird. Do you think they originally wanted one in each city is what I meant 😊

    • @Ludicollision
      @Ludicollision 9 месяцев назад +3

      @sonicxskylar7864 there was more planned for each city! You can actually see some of them in some early footage of the games.

    • @stebbenwolfe
      @stebbenwolfe 9 месяцев назад +4

      @@sonicxskylar7864yeah they wanted to have it be the case that each city had an arena and then you could go from arena to arena fighting and competing against the various champions of those cities. Eventually it was decided that it was too complicated to implement so they scrapped that idea and the only arenas are the imperial city one and Kvatch as you mentioned.

      I love that you commented this! It was originally in my script and a part of the video, exactly what you said about this quest likely being developed before the removal of the arenas! I took it out because I didn’t think anyone would care about it but I’m really glad people do!! I really do believe it was developed before the removal of all of the arenas!

    I can't help but to think every time I hear about this quest - Why didn't Aleron simply stand near the gate? If he wasn't a fighter and didn't want to go fight into the Fort, he should've simply waited at the gate and maybe someone would find him and he could escape. When player opens it, he can literally run away and survive! So simple! Quest over! Aleron survives! Nah, instead he stands literally few meters behind looking at nothing and then he dies no matter what happens during the quest. :/

      @ABardsBallad  9 месяцев назад +5

      I agree with you! It seems like he does the bare minimum to actually try and escape! 😂

      Could be that he tried but got shot at by keen eye whenever he got near the gate.

    Honestly I don't think the close proximity to the necromancers is a coincidence it was definitely intentional environmental storytelling. As for whether its an actual arrangement, I can't see that orc based on our interactions with him not trying to make a buck on this end of the process as well.

    Aleron claims that Kurdan "takes care of the bodies", but it isn't clear _which_ bodies he's referring to. I think it makes sense for him to take out the bodies of the hunters; like you said, it probably wouldn't feel too good to see chopped-up bodies of people like you strewn around. Besides, if these guys are rich enough to drop a _shitload_ of gold just to go all Jason Voorhees on some poor schmuck, they'd logically be rich enough to get people wondering where they went if they died. If someone investigated Fort Grief and found their bodies there, it wouldn't look good for Kurdan.
    I think that _all_ the skeletons we see are of past victims. My theory is that the hunters deliberately leave some of the bodies around, just to instill that much more fear and terror in their victims before the bloodshed begins. They probably don't leave _every_ single victim's body behind; some of them are likely shipped off to Cadlew Chapel. But a few victims' bodies are left behind, for the reasons I just mentioned. Hell, maybe Kurdan takes some of the victims and _deliberately poses the bodies_ in places where they're likely to be seen by future victims. Considering all the other shit he's done, I wouldn't put it past him.
    One thing I noticed when playing this quest, is that the hunters all attack you on sight; if they're already paying so much money, one would think they'd try to drag things out more. One possibility is that they want to incapacitate you first, and then torture you the rest of the way. Another possibility is that Kurdan warned them ahead of time that they'd be going up against a treasure-hunting adventurer, so they decide not to fuck around and try to kill you as quick as they can, and _then_ go up and start torturing Aleron.
    Furthermore, a commenter on another "Caught in the Hunt" video brought up a pretty good point: If Kurdan is indeed selling at least some of the bodies to Cadlew Chapel, then he's essentially selling the same product twice. He sells it first when the hunters pay him to kill people, then he sells it again when the necromancers buy the bodies off him. It's actually a pretty brilliant scheme, albeit an *INTENSELY* fucked up and demented one.
    P.S. On one of your older videos, I mentioned I only ever use black soul gems on necromancers, as a bit of poetic justice. Well, Kurdan is one of the very few NPCs other than necromancers I'm willing to use black soul gems on, because he's just _that much_ of a scumbag. Another is Audens Avidius (thanks to his note about making Itius Hayn "squeal" before killing him, on top of all the other shit he did). I'd also *GLADLY* use a black soul gem on Alessia Caro (the countess of Leyawiin who tortures Argonian prisoners) if she wasn't essential. I'm a bit torn on her husband, as he's pretty cordial to you regardless of your race, and the secret passage to the torture chamber is through Alessia's private quarters, not his.
    Edit: Fixed some typos; I kept misspelling "hunters" for some reason :P

      I appreciate you taking the time to comment this! :) I really like your notion that they leave some bodies around to instil fear in the victims! I think it’s very likely! And yes I agree! I think Kurdan tells them ahead of time if it’s someone with combat skills or not so they are prepared!

    You have a fantastic narration and your voice is very easy to listen to and follow.
    One thing I think could be improved is maybe you could brighten the exceptionally dark areas? I'm not suggesting midnight to look like midday, but I would like to see the darkest dungeons in a well-lit room, like 9:45, for example.
    Please keep up the excellent work! I'd love to see where and how your channel grows!

    The skeletons in the fort could probably be the "previous occupants" of this obviously abandoned and probably ancient structure. You know, the skeletons you see in other Cyrodiilic forts quite often. The walking and beating-the-F-out-of-any-living-soul kind ones, or any other people from the same Tamriellic age as those.

  • @joetheman74
    @joetheman74 9 месяцев назад +1

    Dark Lore Dash covered Barssmonkey17's theory about two years ago. You should check out his video. I think what makes the most sense is that the skeletons on the island are the typical skeletons laying around in an old fort you find everywhere in Oblivion. They are set dressing by the devs. I think the environmental story telling combined with the quest dialog is meant to lead you to the idea that the Orc takes the bodies to the chapel. Though not said I agree with Dash that he is likely selling the bodies to them. I also think we are meant to assume that we are the first "prey" to beat the Orcs game. After all. First he says none have ever made it out alive. He then later says it is his game and he's changing the rules. If previous "prey" had ever won this like would make less sense. Check out Dash's video and see what you think.

      But yeah, after you get all the keys and come out to find the Orc who trapped you, you see him standing there with the guy you came to rescue and you just cannot move.
