Recently learnt Russians have absolutely outstanding submarines, especially the Yasen. I'm really pro-west and love all the post-LA class subs but have to admire what USSR/Russia can make!
the Problem with Russia, is maintenance. all the latest submarine they have build, was really silents, but after some time and electric motors starting to get "old" and noisy. Instead of doing what Americanas do, they try to repair them, when something is already worn out... so they stay noisy. But they have been good at reducing all the noise they do make, but then they have build up a lot of experience, from building submarines that you could hear on the other side of the world. For example Victor class, the second nosiest submarine in the world, only China have one that is noisier. When American submarine encountered a Victor, they heard it so early, that they could easily drive out of it's way and never be detected. There is a reason Victors class submarines have been involved with many NATO submarines in the 70's -80'. But then they was so noisy that there was no point for them using there passive sonar, they generated to much noise, som is also a reason why Soviet/Russian submarines love to use active sonar.
@@heuhen Noisy submarines can provide a huge tactical advantage. Just litter the waters with drones playing from their underwater speakers the noise of a Victor class... ... while your silent submarines can sneak silently masked by the noisy drones' diversion.
@@heuhen I think the situation is not as funny as you write, and here's why. During the Caribbean crisis, several boats of the USSR were looking for all the NATO navy near Cuba - not all were found. And that was 60 years ago. In the 80s, a photograph of the Statue of Liberty, taken from our submarine, appeared in the media. There was a commotion in your coastal defense. Our submariners periodically practice strikes and operational tracking of your aircraft carriers. And yes, in most cases it is invisible. If you can read about Operation Atrina in 1987. Tikuna earned the nickname "carrier predator" when in a single exercise (JTFEX) it sank 3 American aircraft carriers (USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, USS Harry S. Truman and the Illustrious) in addition to having in another exercise (PASSEX) 2x sunk the USS Carl Vinson and the Spanish Prince of Asturias.
About project 941 "Shark"(Akula), better known as "Typhoon". After the destruction of the Soviet Union, the military-industrial complex found itself in a difficult position. As a result of intense competition, erroneous decisions and inter-agency intrigues, a suitable replacement for missiles for this submarine was never created. Only the last unit called "Dmitry Donskoy" serves now. However, it is used as a training and test ship. Without a doubt, this is a unique submarine that never realized its potential.
