Worked in a mirrored building in a natural setting. Birds kept flying into and killing themselves. Sometimes whole flocks of them would hit. It was really disturbing to witness.
5:32 So he mentions that the plus marks on the reflective surface is a bird film to prevent bird strikes. I think only time will tell how well it works. Bird strikes happen often enough with big windows on regular, non-reflective, even overtly large buildings; the windows themselves are a major source of confusion for birds. So I would be happier to see bird film on the big window as well. They make decals that are reflective in the UV range but mostly translucent in the visible range, so in theory, they are very apparent to birds but don't obstruct the view through the window. I'm glad that they took it into consideration at least. Building a cabin with the gimmick of being in harmony with nature, that instead actively kills wildlife, would be pretty cringey lol. I will admit it looks pretty cool though.
Hi Everyone! We're seeing lots of comments from people concerned about birds. We love them, too! We're not experts but we asked a lot of questions and from what we learned (and from what Josh shared at the end of the video), the bird film and panel distortion were an integral part of the cabin design to make sure it was safe, and they do a great job of making the cabin visible to birds and wildlife. The cabin is also low to the ground and tucked into the woods. As a side note, we also found that the window was almost as reflective as the stainless steel panels. Thanks for watching and commenting :) :)
As much as I love this channel I can't help but feel that 90% of these homes are unsustainable and their owners are all doing this as a hobby. It's not really an alternative per se.
User name checks out :) Anyway, I agree 100%. Many of these "homes" aren't actual homes, just pet projects to show who can charge the most for a weekend stay.
Amazing what people in design and architecture can make. This is the most beautiful and mini house we ever saw with Exploring …A dream coming through. Not only functional but out of space. Love the counters and the set up to see outside and sleep with relaxing music. Soooooooo tempting!
You achieved your mission with flying colors...nature is the centerpiece yet all the comfort a person needs is still provided without distracting from it. Way to go!!!
The mirroring effect, as well as the markings, should significantly reduce that. There are few birds that will intentionally fly towards what appears to be an object approaching it, ie it's reflection.
@@aprisia - My patios doors disagree with your analysis. Birds, especially when startled, will fly towards large windows or doors that are only slightly reflective, never mind almost fully mirrored.
@@barnstar2077 I want you to think about what you just said. You are trying to refute my claim that animals tend not to want to rush head first towards their own reflection by citing antecdotal evidence of animals flying into something that is mostly clear and, by your own admission, has a very low ability to reflect images...
simple light woods are very "cheery" feeling as well. a cold morning with snow outside, and a hot pot of coffee brewing and some eggs on the stove, with that bright wood greeting you. yeah i could do that!
This home is beautiful, and as usual, your photography is wonderful. However, I prefer the homes that you show that people live in, rather than those homes built for rental purposes. Success doesn’t define to what happened to us; it is how we choose to deal with our circumstances. The more you grow and develop as an incredible person as you are, the more things will change for the better. Forgive more (for you), be grateful for even the smallest things (we have it way better than someone else), choose love over ego, choose humility over ego (humility is strength), and finally, invest into new skills so that your future self will thank you. Our lives will change forever the more we grow. Be thankful for the challenges for we know something greater is coming. Love you always - Nathalie ✨❤️
I love this mirrored cabin. It reminds me of the mirrored houses of artist Doug Aitken. I love how the outside changes with the seasons, the minimalist Scandinavian interior design of white maple furniture, the stainless steel accents and the large windows that allow light to come in. This is absolutely beautiful.
It's...different. I just recently saw a vid of a bear reacting to it's own reflection in a mirror placed in the wild & it wasn't pleased lol. It was pretty funny but I can imagine the sheer terror of any of anyone inside if a bear came across this cabin! 😂😂😂
I will Equip this cabin with bear paper spray hose sprayer around the cabin and have a bullet proof mirror. And a loudspeaker just to blast a loud gun shot to scare bear, lion and maybe a monkey
I wondered about this too. If a bear were to see it's reflection, not only would it be attracted to come closer, but it might also become agitated. An agitated bear is not a nice bear.
That was the first thing I thought of. The bear instantly attacked the mirror. My guess is that it is a risk with this mirrored cabin, too. A second issue: you might walk outside not knowing a bear is a few feet away since there is no window on two sides of the cabin.
Beautiful and comfortable. Thank you for the careful concern about the birds - great idea with the exterior check marks! I love love how the siding reflects nature. 😍🤩
Bird films are great at preventing bird strikes on windows, but I would imagine their application on large reflective structures is still experimental. Only time will tell how well it works and if it is enough.
@@DaimyoD0 yes we put some on a big window at my sister's house. We got the bird shaped ones. To us inside they just look like frosted glass bird shapes. They look fine and stops them from flying in to it. But there's no way I'm going to believe birds don't fly into this entire reflective home.
That would be a dream come true in my life I've always wanted to go live in the woods like that it's beautiful my prayer is that God will bless me Amen
Wow. Completely wild. I do think you would have animals and birds running into it continuously, though. I guess they would see themselves soon before collision, though. We used to have birds colliding with our large kitchen window though, a lot. Sad.
4 of these side by side surrounded by a deck would make a nice house. one for a bedroom, one for a living room, one for a kitchen and one for storage. could lay them out in a square so there is a 20'x20' indoor garden in the center make the walls 1 foot thick foam board insulation, solar panels over the entire roof and solar panels over half the deck for shade. then hire a couple kids once a week to come clean the exterior.
@12macarrones you must have grown up spoilt rotten. I really enjoyed earning my own money as a school kid one afternoon a week. Not only must you have grown up having had every last little cent handed to you on a platter by your parents, but you are so devoid of empathy that you don't even recognise that, to some kids, this would seem like a worthwhile opportunity, and you d want it obliterated by replacing them with robots.
Would be interesting to see the windows be one-way mirrors so that the exterior of the building is completely reflective. Though that might reduce sunlight entering the cabin.
Not sure how I came up w/this vid, but absolutely elated that I did! This is definitely something out of the norm, it's superb, impressively splendid, & a sight for sore eyes even though it's "hidden in plain sight" Lol...Love it man!!!
I love it! Does the bird marking work? Has it been up long enough to know? I wonder, when I look at the reflective buildings, if they create heat islands?
I believe birds will still fly into it. The "+" don't show up except at certain angles, and often times there is at least a section where they don't show up despite them being visible in another section.
Just curious if the outside cladding heats up from the sun? Seems to me it would be hot to the touch. As it's beautiful, and delivers a high design quality, I wonder if the cladding actual works for the cabin or against it? All of the yellow tags in the analog room I found to be overkill. I am assuming they are instructions like what we saw in the vlog... which is great that you want to create an experience, but could be delivered in one yellow card rather than all over the room. I didn't find that peaceful. Other than that I love the thought and the overall conscept seems very nice.

Birds must fly into it all the time. They often fly at my patio doors, even when the curtains are closed and the glass isn't mirrored.
The mirroring effect, as well as the markings, should significantly reduce that. There are few birds that will intentionally fly towards what appears to be an object approaching it, ie it's reflection.

The maple interior building is exactly what I'd want as my own home. The natural smell of wooden furniture, etc is what's most appealing to me.
