    Hi Adam. I'm 71 years old and swim a mile to 1.5 miles nearly every day. I'm not very tall (5'7'') and do 22 strokes per 25 metre length. Though my stamina is good, I'm not very fast. I have mastered the two beat kick and that helps me save energy. I keep my head level - facing the bottom of the pool and I have the same arm recovery that you demonstrate but I have watched other coaches demonstrating long distance front crawl and try as I might, I could never develop the seemingly effortless power to my stroke. Today I watched this video before going to the pool and decided to try this drill. I did not expect to be able to accomplish the kickless hip rotation without lots of practice.
    After watching dozens of swimming videos I have to say this one has made the greatest difference. I instantly managed to swim a length, rotating my hips and then stroking and without kicking and yet keeping my feet level not sinking. I could feel I was getting better propulsion from my arms with seemingly less effort. I felt more balanced and relaxed. I realised that previously, I had been using the stroke action of my arm to achieve body rotation and that meant I was wasting effort in rotation rather than forward motion. Best of all, I timed a length and cut two seconds off my usual average time and that was whilst doing this drill and deliberately slowing the stroke. This was certainly a lightbulb moment. Thank you so much for sharing this technique and explaining it so well. I am very excited to continue honing this improved technique.

    I’m inspired by your videos. I’m 74 and swim 80 - 100 lengths in a 50 minute session 3 times a week. I still struggle with getting even rotation and use a pull bouy pretty much all the time as my legs still drag and impede my progress. I reduced my cadence last session and got down to 45 minutes for the 2.5Km. Huge improvement. Can’t wait to try out the drill in this video. Thanks and keep them coming.

    I have a deformed left foot since birth and the times I've tried running I've always ended up with injuries. I have switched to swimming in the last few months and not only do I feel more fit, I have a great deal more mental clarity and focus. At first I found swimming so difficult even after having many lessons as a kid. I would get winded after a few laps. I have eagerly watched many of your videos and now 1) keep my head facing the bottom of the pool 2) rotating at the the hips and 3) focusing on gliding. Now I can easily swim 25-30 minutes without feeling winded at the end. My wife even said I'm starting to get abs which was unthinkable a year ago! Not only is swimming far easier now, I truly feel that what I often held as my limitations were never my true limit and there is usually room to expand ones capabilities if you simply get creative and practice! Thank you for all these lessons.

But hey.. may aswell learn in the sea as that's where I'll be doing it.... eh... (I'll see how I get on with it.. but might try and talk my nice lass into purchasing your vimeo....Least we could do is give you some reimbursement! but like I said, we aint doing too well financially at moment here...) - Hey... for first time in years.. My bikes are being neglected!! haha... and it'll soon be bike season again here!!! But stuff it... I'm more into this!! Hi Coach Adam...
    I would like to continue the explanations about your great technic of swimming about rolling mechanism....
    I watch some vedios to see how fish is swimming.. the amazing thing is fish is follow same technique but in other way... actually fish doing like a snake motion... slim fish bending their body then crawl... In my opinion.. when we are in a static fluid... the heavy resistance of this fluid can be reduced when we can create for surronding fluid around our bodies a kinetic fluid... when we push this mass of fluid away from our bodies and crawl.. in this case we reduce resistance... same thing is doing by fish... heavy pressure of water around body of the fish.. it try to push by wave motion or snake motion then crawl.... so fish produce or give by full body a kinetic energy to the surrounding water... then very easly start crawling... this is one secret of fluid or water....
    Now let us come back to your graceful technique Coach Adam... By Semi rolling motion start from core (hip) muscles... you give a kinetic energy to the water.. even this motion in perpendicular direction of swimmer motion.. however the pushing of water in this direction make same fish action when it moves in a wave or snake motion... this action let water more friendly with swimmer.... as well this rolling 45 degree then 0 then opposite 45 degree... let swimmer make smoething like a screw crawling.. imagine you put your hand in a water and start rotate 45 degree 0 opposite 45 degree... you feel your hand crawl and gliding in a water.......
    last point any motion of any part of body during swimming produces a kinetic energy in the water. and let water react to your body... if this motion is proper the water response will help swimmer.. the motion is not correct the response of water will not be helpful for swimmer...
    Here Coach Adam technic to rotate by hips first this kinetic energy is very beneficial for swimmer.. and will help....
    Sorry Coach Adam for long explanation.. But I will continue thinking for this pretty Technique... and share you all of knowledge with all of your followers..
    My Best Regards..

    Less body mass when rotating? No, mass is the same, what changes is the profile when sideways, less resistance

    • @ericedberg
      @ericedberg 2 года назад +13

      When he’s rotated that much, more of his body is out of the water, so while the mass of his body remains the same, there’s less body mass in the water (at least it seems to me).

    • @williamellis1513
      @williamellis1513 2 года назад +1

      @@ericedberg then you have surface tension to manage… which is why we are faster under the water than on top. ie dolphin kicking off the wall. The Kinetic energy that extra rotation gives a swimmer is key to what Adam talks about and teaches. In the same way, we are not “faster on our side” - assuming streamline is maintained (otherwise we would kick faster on our side than front - and we don’t). What rotation engages is total body movement. More DPS, more ‘glide’ and larger muscle groups.

    • @eddykapasibu7899

      @Eduardo
      Phiscally when You there are three forces acting on You...
      The friction between You and water
      The own weight of water in front of you when You move forwared...
      The pushing force that produced by Your arm when you crawl....
      Getting the best position in the water when you crawl to minmize the own wheight of water in front of you this reduce the resistance or what we can say drag force ...
      So in simple word coach Adam said mass less ( your own weight + own weight in front of you that you push it)

    Rotating to this extent will have me sinking too low in the water meaning difficulty getting a breath. The nearly stacked position is surely much less buoyant and as i am long and skinny makes me knife shaped rather than boat shaped if you get my meaning. Any thoughts on this Adam?

  • @dudleyduncan5643
    @dudleyduncan5643 3 года назад +7

    Try this: as the recovering hand enters the water, imagine the top hip connected by a rod to the entering hand, use the hip to push the imaginary rod and the entering hand forward into a perfectly horizontal body line from hips to the longest - most horizontal line you can make. Simultaneously to the hand entry, pull with the opposite arm / hand through the line of pull. You will realize exceptional forward movement. Repeat on the other side. Your stroke count will lower, your power will increase proportional to the hip drive and you will decrease your resistance with a horizontal body line.

    Hi Coach Adam...
    Hope You are doing well...
    This is my third explanation by Mechanics for your Great Technique of Swimming...
    But this time to prove my explanation I hope You can share one vedio of freestyle swimming by doing only rolling side by side without crawling by hand to prove me one thing(Crawling By Rolling) ...
    Actually your technique you try to invent and shift the freestyle swimming to a new concept..
    I can say every swimmer in normal free style is swimming by one engine... this engine= two hands = crawling to front to move and keep balance on the back side of the body by legs = Kicks
    Now you introduce second engine to swimmer = rolling...
    What does it meen rolling?....
    Now Imagine you have One boat and fix one fan with two blades... but this engine will not do a full rotation... only half cycle then stop then do opposite cycle....
    This Engine will move the boot to front direction only in one case condition... the blades of fan will push water behind then the boat will move to front...
    this is exactly what you are doing coach Adam.. when you rolling your body you are exactly work same as boat engine... you are crawling by your body...
    So please check this point swimm only by rolling and check how far you can move forward...
    so Now your mechanism shift the swimming to totally new concept...
    And why now you are releasing the pressure From your muscles of shoulders... because you introduce another engine push your body during swimming... Because so much load have been shared with the new engine... shared with the new concept of swimming......
    Your Technique is not only reducing the mass of water you push in front of you when you swimm... not only that... you are swimming now and using like a muscles not in the direction if motion however these muscles make the same function... and you was very smart when you noted same thing with fish....
    Really you invent a New concept in swimming........
    Last point this mass of water you push by rolling action also enhance the pushing force by your hand when you crawl.....
    I give you one example imagine you push a ball... and this ball not move (in Static condition) ... Now push another ball But this ball is moving... here the reaction force on your leg and ball(in moving condition) will be higher...
    same thing when you push the mass of water by your hips.. and then this mass of water become on the same side of your hand that will crawl... now the movemnet by this hand will be more than the same hand but without rolling motion... reaction will be less same as example of ball......
    Summary.........
    ... two engines!! For Swimming...
    ... new concept of crawling by rolling....
    Finally I expect more crawling by rolling motion = more speed of swimming...
    Best of Luck and I hope my explanation this time is correct..
    My Best Regards...

    2:18 I have a question. you say to the way to keep your hips high is to drop your lower arm down, like a 45* angle. Isn't that arm angle going to catch a lot of water and create a ton of drag? Isn't it better to keep that arm horizontal, roughly parallel with your submerged shoulder?

    • @adamwalker32
      @adamwalker32  10 месяцев назад

      As my body is on the side with the lower arm, water flows over the top of my arm. If I was flat with a deeper arm there would be more resistance. If I lift my arm to the surface, my legs would drop and therefore cause more drag with my body sinking as appose to my arm being lower on the side which aids my hips higher. Also if my arm was high I would push water down and my hips would drop on the pull making me slower, instead of pulling water back which is possible with a lower arm. Trying to do a high catch would cause my shoulders to hitch up and create pain. We can’t get away from humans being inefficient in water but it’s about reducing the inefficiency and also aiming to be pain free. Hope that helps :)

      Doing it without helps you focus on how to get natural buoyancy. A pull bouy will bring your legs up but not make you work for the efficiency. Then you take the pull bouy away and your legs will sink again.

    1. Drag force and mass of water:
    When you move in the water you push your mass+ Mass of water that front of your body surface..
    So when you sinking in the water and crawl you lose more energy.. because you crawl your mass + the mass of water in fron of you...
    Hear coach Adam says Mass is less when drill hips.. He is 100% correct...
    When you change position in water from front face to side now your body surfce submerged in water in this position becomes less so the mass of water that you push during crawling become less... so here saving so much energy... increase speed... less efforts on shoulder muscles....... this pepole by mistakes say drag force... this not correct... when you put any surface in the water push... this produces hydrostatic force in opposite direction... this very heavy resistance force...
    So Coah Adam technique by rolling reducing surface area of body in the water reduces resistance force.....
    2. rolling hips push water down... this make reaction from the water to the body of swimmer increasing a little uplift force of the water around hips area... this uplift force increase stability of swimmer.. gives a swimmer a chance to relaxe front muscles of shoulders and arms
    .... which also saving more energy... enhance uplift.. decrease chance of sinking of body.....
    3. when you crawl after rotating hips and shoulder this reduce the distance between cener of mass of body and hand.... when you swim and your body flat.. now the disance between cener of mass and hand is more than when you crawal from your body side......
    when the hand near the center of Mass... this reduce the torsional moment on the body and saving energy and reducing the energy on the shoulder muscles...
    to understand this point immagine you pull one rope and distance between your hand and your head is 1 meter... then pull the same rope and your hand is near your head.. in this case the shoulder muscles will lose less energy rather than hand far away your head...
    this is same case when you crawl from side position and you hand near you center of mass of body...
    Many Many Thanks for this great swimmer.. Great trainer.. Great Coach.. Sir Adam...

    I check your technique coach Adam from principal of mechanics...
    Actually in case no rotation the full force from arm will transfer to the body to move through shoulder muscles...which will be very heavy because you move full body by arm ...
    Second weak point ...the arm will produce moment on the body to raise head and sink back parts i mean legs ...which is not good ...
    But in your technique...when you roll by hips and shoulder about spinal chord or center line of body ...actually you start pushing your arm back by rotation not by arm muscles ....imagine one person lie on a bid and extend his arm and catch a one rope and he start rotation ..without moving his arm he will pull the rope...
    So when you roll you push your arm back by two way ..rotation ( hips And chest rotation) and muscle of shoulder ...so now you release at least 50℅Of load from moscluse of shoulder that you was looking to release the heavy load on the shoulder...
    Sure reducing drag is second good point...
    I give you second example to clarify the benefit of rotation...
    Imagine you set in a boat ...
    To move you need to fix shoulder and pull water by hand ....now all energy produced from shoulder muscle...
    Other way to move ...is to fix arm in the water without movement but rotate around your spinal chord ....now the hip muscles will produce the energy to move the boat ....
    Third method ...do both action rotation + moving arm ...
    So now you are using both types of muscles to move ...hip muscles + shoulder muscles...
    That is coach Adam technique great discovery for swimming......

    I take on board what you say but it's horse for courses. Have you experimented with what distance is a cut off point when racing? My gut feel is anything under 400m would be too slow. Also in a pool, there are no under currents, waves etc and humans are not as solid as boats. Seems to me an hell of a lot of torque is put on the core and muscles around the pelvis.

      No pressure at all on the spine, hips or shoulders. All done through the feet. Regarding waves and under currents. I developed the technique to complete the Toughest 7 ocean swims in the World following injury and advised to give up by my surgeon. I swam in massive swells and currents including 17 hours none stop across the Molokai Channel. 15.5 hours across Tsugaru Channel. I became first British person to swim from Spain to Morocco and back to Spain breaking British speed record one way in the process. I’ve also swam from Ireland to Scotland, Catalina Channel and Cook Strait in New Zealand known for some of the most treacherous waters in the world!

    Can this be done while incorporating a much higher stroke per min. count? It appears this forms makes higher stroke counts (i.e., 70-75) more difficult.

    • @adamwalker32
      @adamwalker32  3 года назад +2

      Due to the timing and gaining a big glide this reduces stroke rate but not speed. It also saves energy with less strokes. I use to do 70 Spm now I’m 43 and faster. Checkout vimeo.com/ondemand/oceanwalkertechnique

      @@adamwalker32 Thanks for the reply. So, would you say that the more typical stroke rate for this technique would be between the low 60's - high 50's?
      BTW. I am already a subscriber to your videos. But, I noticed you have never approached (in detail) the optimal stroke rate (if there is such a thing). Also, does stroke rate change relative to conditions and or body type (tall vs. short, etc.) to obtain more glide? A specific video regarding this subject would be nice if you think it would be useful.
      Personally, I have used a mixed-variation of your approach for about 30+ yrs.. At the start of mass swims (for example), I use a short stroke and kick/rotate but transition mid-swim to more "flat, longer reach with high spm" when I am in calm waters or not drafting. This mixed approach has resulted in faster times but I am not convinced it is the most efficient (especially for a long course triathlete).
      In short, I go from mentally training at either strokes per minute to foot flicks (i.e., 2-beat kick) per minute depending on what I want ... more glide or more pull - depending on the swim conditions. More turbulent the water (like drafting), the more I use the kick per min. approach. The less turbulent the water, the more I use stroke per min. that tends to emphasise the pull.
      BTW - to put my comments in perspective, I'm 64 and have been swimming for about 36 yrs as a triathlete (all distances).

      @@joemoya9743 Ok. So to answer your questions. There isn’t an optimum stroke rate with this technique as there as many factors which will determine how far you glide before you do the next stroke. For instance how fast is your rotation how good is the pull, how effective is the timing. Regarding height. It will give you more reach if your taller but if someone is smaller but has a stronger kick and pull and better timing they could glide longer. I have many different heights and body compositions I’ve coached and I can get everyone doing the stroke once they understand how. I swim the same way in mass starts I may just kick and pull a little harder to get away from the pack. Same at the end but the stroke rhythm remains the same. When it’s rougher I don’t increase cadence or shorten the stroke if anything I’ll go the other way longer to glide under the waves. The stroke is very effective in rough water. Hope that helps.

      @@adamwalker32 I’m really not in any position to question what you say here, but just from watching pack of elite Triathletes race - it doesn’t seem to be much emphasis on glide at all. Especially in choppier conditions. It’s high cadence 'windmills' all around.

    While this technique may have useful utility in long distance freestyle it is not compatible with best and most effective technique for shorter distances up to 10 km by more experienced competitive swimmers.
    Most often the “best” technique will also need to take into account the individual and both their physical and mental capabilities.
