Sorry about the audio quality in this video. Our old TV broadcast tapes are audio mixed this way. For best results use headphones, and you'll find the voice over in the left ear and only rally sounds on the right. We hope you can still enjoy all the drama, interviews and classic rally engine noise despite the quality.
Agreed! Best part is, you still get a road legal Impreza STI today, that draws it's inspiration and some of its prowess from the rally monster in this video.
Thanks for uploading. Who cares about the sound quality? This footage is priceless! I had several VHS tapes (unfortunately they were overtaken by technology and rendered obsolete) with incredible rally footage from the 90's. In one of them, Ari Vatanen had a forward-facing camera attached to the front of the Imprezza and boy was he flying.
What a legend, sorry legends. Ari I think is the longest serving superstar of rallying and in so many different cars. He's always so relaxed and just so quick.. I've actually shaken him by the hand on the IOM back in the 1980s. None of the talent rubbed off though.
@Mr.Dinoface they will come if the WRC becomes full electric, at least that's what the Alpine PDG said. So basically, either we loose WRC because there are not enough cars or we loose the sould of rally but we get more cars. I don't care if the cars are electric but the sound plays a big part in the world of rally so... either way we loose a bit
Opinion: Rally 2 cars should become the mainclass WRC cars aka Rally 1 cars. Also slighly less restricting turbo restrictors should be allowed to make the cars have around 300 bhp like old day wrc cars. Also WRC 2 drivers should become WRC drivers. I think this would be insanely amazing. More drivers and manufactures competing on a equal ground would be an absolute thrill to follow. Right now there are really like what 6-10 full time drivers competing for the WRC title with 3 different cars. That is actually pretty depressing compared to these old days...
Brace yourself my take kind of turned into an essay The problem I think with the rules is what we effectively have now is a modern take on group B and what's come with that is all the problems with group B that the people who romanticise and worship it forget. The philosophy of group B was about ultra powerful, nonsense on wheels silhouette cars with big speeds and big commitment. And that is what we have now. They're well over 500 hp they carry ridiculous speeds, I do genuinely think they sound great, I think the talent pool of Rovanperra, Tanak, Neuville etc is great. But group B was massively unfriendly if you're a privateer or a smaller manufacturer, the cost of the R & D to make a competitive car was huge and it simply wasn't anywhere near as competitive as people think it was I'm not sure about going back to WRC2 because if It doesn't work the one draw the current cars have, the speed, will be gone. I think we need WRC1.5 and in my mind that's the original 1997 WRC regs but with the hybrid. And I also think an F1 cost cap would massively help as well. Ultimately I just think WRC needs more fans, if there's more fans hopefully the manufacturers will follow. In a way though I'm strangely optimistic. Now Ogier is just there now and again for the banter it's kind of where F1 was in 2007 where the way is open and we've got a load of drivers all as competitive as each other and all capable of winning and if 2023 stays as competitive as Sweden and Mexico have been I think this year will hopefully be a banger
I remember watching as a kid when the local rally TV broadcast had a short take on driving lines during the event. One driver had his tire tracks about half a meter closer to the tree trunk than anyone else. Guess who?
Although not quite the same as the rally car, Id love a WRX STI in the UK. Not cheap to run but would make commuting a hoot, turning up in one with that wonderful noise and laughing at all the bores in their German lease cars. Im 53 by the way not some young boy racer. I really cannot stand the way our society is filled with people who cant think for themselves and prefer to follow fashion trends for fear of not being in that exclusive club. Its so pathetic. Fear of not fitting in instead of being an individual, how very sad. Life too short to be like everyone else.
In all honesty the cars at that time were not that interesting, more of a electronics arms race to fix for all short comings. Ari on the other hand is a true legend.

The raw sounds 😍😍😍😍
Love Ari and love Subaru, the perfect marriage ..💙
I am in love with this car
You gotta love it when you’re flat out insane!

Love this car. Was not born yet when it was still in action but damn this car is such a classic wrc beauty.
If only Subaru and Mitsubishi were in WRC again
more brands are needed to join the wrc as the golden age of group A
I think more car brand diversity would uplift the image and popularity of rallye immensely.
But selling SUV made more profit for them
@Mr.Dinoface yeah but the italian hatchback is the legend

I don't like hatchback! Impreza is the best!
