- A short piece about Colin McRae and Rallying that was shown (late 1996 / early 96) on BBC's 'How do they do that' programme. The programme was presented by Eamonn Holmes and Jenny Hull. This is assumed to be in Season 3 or 4 of 5 of the show
"When in doubt, Flat Out" - Colin McRae
"But while doing a Flat Out don't play FlatOut" ~ me
Trophy unlocked
When in doot, flat oot.

"F1 is for fast cars. Rally is for fast drivers".
- Collin McRae -
@@cozyjuu2740 you are aware what you just said? Insulting another sport is not career suicide lol. F1 drivers aren't this protected special group you can't offend or say anything bad about, especially as a world class rally driver for a company without an open wheel racing team... 🤡
Idk, f1 relies on both dummy fast cars AND drivers with the reflexes and coordination to control them. Its not like just anyone can hop in an f1 car and set record track times! Drag racing is for fast cars, rally is for fast drivers, but id say that f1 is a middle ground
@@buzzmas8068
agreed !
Buzzmas i still think that rally depends more on skill than f1.
@@rompsamies9315 your forgetting about how strong the g forces are in a F1 car.
A normal person would just straight up pass out in a F1 car if they tried to drive like a professional.
0:52 anybody who played Rally Championship 2000 must recognize this countdown voice!
Yeah!
Well i play the polish (aka the most commom) version and sadly tho I can't get that voice...
But still this game has better tracks than CMR 2.0
Omg yes
I even recognised the stage at the beginning.
Ps1 memories.
Its drivers like Colin that made the rally interesting to watch , one of the greatest and bravest of all !
The left footed braking is impressive
Its a racing technic in general. As like heel to toe.
Look at the Footwork of Walter Röhrl...
@Kris Richards It's a standard technique used by virtually all rally drivers, certainly today.
It’s a technique they used to help turn awd cars instead of using hand brake, e-brake, as to not brush off speed and keep momentum going. It was something that Colin taught himself.
@@rewinapier8474 I taught myself how to do it. Took me almost 20 years to do it perfectly without thinking and not crashing in all driving conditions. I do it in every car I drive now every day. I also don't use the clutch once the car is moving which makes left-foot braking easier. You know you can do it when you still do it under pressure because when you're learning you switch back when you need to stop quickly. It's one of the hardest things I've learned to do because you drive for so long right-foot braking so you need to unlearn that which is burned into your subconscious.
If Netflix Drive To Survive managed to get peoples attention. I really hope they make a Rally equivalent of that show.
@3:06 coolest pit approach EVER!
he was such a great driver
Cosigner22 3:03
that was colins approach :)
Drifting into the pit like a bawss.
Gotta approach this way the nextime I bring my car for a regular service.
Thanks to fancy light weight shoes?? 🐸
Dennis Vanderben pretty much
Joshua MT Gee, really??
Them shoes are what are those that is some funny shit
Anyone have link for purchase?...
allows him to easily move his feet throgh the pedals without them getting weighed down and building too much momentum when moving from brake to clutch and stuff
I miss you Colin.. 😥🤘🏼

Wait. Is he dead? I'm not that much into rally and only know colon for a bit on the internet
@Dicky Anders sad...
Rest In Peace Colin. You're greatly missed!
"You're here for a good time, not a long time..."
"It'll only last a couple races"
_Especially with Colin at the wheel_
no matter how bad the crash which was more than likely a roll, he always kept going though
25 years to the month since this was first broadcast. Amazing how continually popular this piece is since I uploaded it some years ago
I tried left food breaking last night on way to work!
Good job I had my seatbelt on and there was no other vehicles behind me!
Never break using your food!
necrophcodr - Ah Hahahahah, only just realised I’d type food instead of foot.
Thanks for pointing it out.
haha we (stick drivers in Europe) have this kind of experience when we go to US let's say and start driving autos. Cause you will try to hit the clutch with your left foot (by reflex) but will hit the brakes instead XD
@@sTOUPILvalentin lol..
Lol.. I tried it once too..thank goodness no one saw me..
"Six right tightens" The nostalgia hit me hard at 3:28.
Reminds me of my beloved childhood game cmr 04.♥
I named my son Colin after him...
Nice.
Now make sure that he becomes a rally driver.

@Khadz Adil the famous Colin Armstrong innit?

“To ordinary drivers like you and me”
Did you just assume my driving experience?
if in doubt flat out mcrae
I'm lucky enough to own a 97 wrx sti type ra V-limited. The closest production car to this.
You should make a video about it :D Would love to see
Wesley nice but isnt the 22b the closest to it? Still an awesome car tho
@@megamilchman no the 22b was introduced late 97. They only had the 4 door prior 92-97. but still obviously my car is a far cry from one of these. Id like to get it close one day. Plan to do a 6 speed swap soon.
@@megamilchman yeah it is, but the '97 sti type ra is the closest reasonably priced production car... The 22b is more like just a collectors car and not really a production car
@@oce884 totally right but can't even get my hands on the type ra in Germany
wow if only every tv show would be so well researched and presented like this. really points out anything important about rallying in a short time without making cringy mistakes.
Can you imagine if the clutch or break just froze up for a HALF of a second? This kind of racing takes some insane level of concentration, truly amazing.
to be fair with how experienced he was he'd more than likely just correct it and keep going... or roll he did a lot of that
Colin was never at total control... That's why we love him
Instinct
Colin McRae became my favourite wrc driver after i watched him drive two times (or three?) at rally acropolis. I will never forget his style and his aggresiveness at a, really, tough rally. When he was approaching you thought that the car was a wild beast ready to eat you up -no matter how far from it you were positioned. Impressive, take no prisoners, driving, coming -i believe- from the earlier days of racing when the drivers risked a lot all the time. That's all from a greek guy//
That boxer sound!
Mc rae: or win or crash. Simply the best!!
if not sure flat out!
I love watching McRae. A master of letting his skills do the talking. Sadly missed.
It’s because of Colin I’m a Subaru fanatic. It was 1993 he was driving a Prodrive Subaru legacy for newly formed SWRT, then won his first WRC rally in Rally New Zealand 🇳🇿
It was then I wanted the RS Legacy but at $70 grand NZ and that was a JDM import. It was going to be a few years.
How cool. They days where a woman could compliment a man on his career, and use the words “best man in the world, makes my heart warm.
Damn I need a 22B
rally drivers are different species
Still SCOTLAND'S only Rally World Champion, If in doubt flat out.

@@parax2491 to be fair colin did like rolling a few cars
@@Matt_10203 It's part of the rally spirit.
Back when racing determined the prestigious title for manufacturers in terms of how reliable a car's engine is for 24 hours, how fast it is in a straight-line, how well it can handle in various terrains, etc. now it's just how expensive the car is and what Beverly Hills is attracted to, but as humans we all change our tastes
Liked the handbrake turn at the end.
The derek voice makes me feel like playing dirt rally games🤣
Derek Ringer doesn't voice any of the Dirt Rally games. Only CMR 4, because he also co-drove Colin during his 2003 stint with Citroën.
"Changing gears once every second in an half"
Indian traffic: I'm gonna end this man's whole career
Funny comment but wish you delivered it in an original format.
I'm a rally winner ....
1st place in my summer car ..
No cheats
Wasn't expecting to see a msc gamer
My car can only get out side the boss before breaking at best and cheats can't fix it.
You sure you didn't have to stop to piss in the radiator? Hehe
Had to pause the the video..
“He uses fancy foot work thanks to these special light weight shoes”
Bruhhhhh 😂
The 90s were a blessed time.
Rally racers are the best racers period
Legend..
My 1st car racing game came under this man's name...
Like he gives full credit to navigator..
Without them..rallying would be at 1/10th of the speed..
Total trust in each other (and car) is critical..
Awesome sport..
lol 75 hp on a family sedan in the 90s even base model civics had more power back then.
paulmaartin In Europe, you are getting EJ-16 1.6 engine.
It had around 90-100 HP. But in Japan you can get a 2.5l engine block. Sadly,we don't get any of that WRX STI love...only Subaru Impreza 1.6
paulmaartin not to be taken literally 😒
@@berko2243 what are you talking about, we have every model. Especially the Wrx Sti models
@@draoiui-loingsigh2340 Where do you live my dude? Here in Balkans you cannot get the older Impreza. EURO Standards fucked it up. Older 2.5L engine cannot cross the borders because of that emission standard. There is only 3 1999 Impreza's here and that's it.
Berko maybe stop living in a 3rd world country

I remember Derek Ringer voiced himself on the old Colin McRae Rally games
so THIS is the infamous co-driver from CMR04 :o
That's why Subaru is a good choice 👌

Colin McRae...driver. Same league as Jim Clarke, different definitions but same standards. Brilliant.
rest in peace to this dynamic duo.
Super conductor,,,,los vídeos donde la cámara esta en la parte de atrás del pasajero son impresionantes ,,,,

Fantastico colin.
Some drivers for some reason can simply stand tall at one step beyond the limit wirhout any problems
Great Colin & Subaru power, WOW

How shall i say it in polite and mannered way...
Colin, simply had enormous Balls.
2:33 a clutch....and at 2:47 a gear lever!!
This is beautiful
did i ever tell you guys i LOVE SUBARU
They should make modern Rally cars manual, using sequential gearboxes takes away a lot.
Unreal you would have never believed these cars were only 300 hp and pretty much stock.
Did you not hear the part where all done and told the car cost £250k
This is better content that the hole wrc yt channel
Not definite but I think they didn’t say “subaru” once at all
1:20 - ish: only last a couple of races? i dont think thats true.. if the crash is bad enough to not be fixable/ or its structural not aesthetic. then sure, i can see them replacing the entire chassis. but otherwise. wtf? pretty sure that body will last a lot longer than that. it will be used in the top wrc for a year, then get sold to a lower class driver to be used, then sold to a lower class etc. unless it gets destroyed that vehicle will spend a long time rallying. surely.
i can see them replacing engine and suspension components a lot, and definitely new tyres and brake pads etc every race. but not the entire chassis. thats ridiculous.
R I P colin, fellow Scot, legend.
bravo. great report!
My names colin and I like rally racing so colin McRae is really cool to me
