So much of what I learned in the industry, especially in the studio? I learned it from Gwen Guthrie. A dear friend. So much so, that when she did the video for RENT? She asked me to be her leading man? We also did a duet called, "Save Your Love For Me." We shot the video New Jersey and she made sure I got TWO Italian hot dogs that day. RIP beautiful lady!❤

It is also my favorite Gwen Guthrie song. It was all impromptu. I just happened to be in the studio with her. The guy who was supposed to do it fell ill. I was just in the right place at the right time. It actually went #2 or #3 in Europe.

Great story on Gwen Guthrie
The main reason she wasn't as big of a star as she should have been was because she didn't have the "Look" that the industry wanted for female artists. This was during the heyday of music videos. Vesta Williams had to deal with this issue too. It's a shame because she probably had more talent than a lot of artists who were just basically eye candy for album covers

Thank you for covering her story. I didn't know she did so much writing and background singing. I remember my mom and dad running Should Have Been You and Padlock when I was growing up. And of course can't forget Nothing Going On But The Rent which they ran on the radio in NYC and I love her rendition of They Long To Be Close To You. So many happy memories with her music.
