Wow! The very first story was amazing, it bought a tear to my eye. I have 2 sons with Autism, one is non verbal and we are about to buy him a tablet for communicating. I am thankful that technology has not forgotten those in the world who still need assistance.
My Grandson is Autistic, and I admire the Parents that don't give up, and the Families that become the voice that defend their kids, and family member with Autism. And to each and everyone of you that suffer any Learning Disability I am really Proud of the kind, and Loving way that characterize you ... even when some People is Cruel, Rude, and ignorant ... specially in the Schools. I pray for each and everyone to find a way to unlock your Mind, to express, to be free. Thanks to the Creators of our Technology, and their kindness in making Tools, Devices, Apps to help our children, and give them a little light.🙃Love,
To those on the spectrum and their families: DON’T give up, learn as much as you can about your autism (every autistic person is different), and manage it the best you can
Technology is the future for communicating to people with autism. As a pre-service teacher, I see iPads being used in all the field placements I have been in. I just hope all people with autism would be lucky enough to get an iPad
This is amazing...... this helps Autistic children communicate by a touch of a screen. 25 years ago, even just 10 years ago, this technology either didn't exist or wasn't fully developed, and now it is.
Really works. We have Aaron, a 21 year old allot like Josh. Aaron has an iPad and he loves it, asks to use it more and more. First thing he has taken real interest in since he was introduced to Whinny the Pooh VHS tapes when he was a toddler. Thank you Steve Jobs for all you have done for Aaron and parents of autistics.
Excellent!!! I know what my son will be getting for x-mas. It also needs to be said, such tools like the iPad and these apps have been around in other forms for several years now, but last time I priced them, they were $3,000 - $5,000 each. Thank you, Steve Jobs..... and thank you 60 Minutes for airing this.

Watching the Autism segments put tears in my eyes, because Daniel's school district refused to teach Daniel to use an IPad to communicate, they would not give him a chance of learning. Great video on Steve Jobs. ~Daniel's mom
With some people with autism some of them, they are trapped in their own bodies, they want say something, but their bodies and brains won't allow them to communicate, luckily with these IPADS with therapy they can communicate what they are feeling, what they are doing, and open up. This could change the way therapies can be done with people with autism.
I'm high functioning autistic and this amazes me. I didn't think that they were actually developing apps for autistic people so they could communicate.
just want to note that communication devices are free for the autism community as they are funded through medicaid, but I dont think that includes the ipad, companies like dynovox and prentke do offer funding.
@sangikim It depends on the level of autism they exhibit though. In cases of severe autism where the person seems to almost be locked in, the ipad seems to be a VERY effective method, as are computers. For someone with asperger's though I agree that helping them develop strong social coping mechanisms is better than trying to circumvent social situations. Technology seems to be a strength of most aspies and autistics though.
Anyone else see the movie that Temple was in? If you haven't you should totally look it up. She revolutionized the way that we move the cattle from holding to the slaughterhouse and made it way more humane. Seriously it's a fantastic movie and it's based off her real story.
Our Autistic daughter is almost 7, and totally non-verbal. She is getting an Augmentative communication device that works much the same way. We think this is wonderful. If we can afford one, we may get an I pad as well. I wonder how expensive the apps. are?
Our Autistic daughter (totally non-verbal) is getting an Augmentive Comm. device that works a lot like the I pad. Her teacher's first response to this news was "Who's going to train her on it?!" -So I can sympathize with your situation. The Speech therapist at school is receptive to the idea. All school districts should be open to using ALL assitive technology devices for communication!!! If yours won't work with you, maybe you should take legal action.
Ipad mini is great for my child that has autism.but make shure you get a protective case there very fragile and expensive but well worth it. Ipad is the only one that has apps just for autism
I have a nephew in south georgia born with autism. He is doing great in school, but he still cannot communicate verbibly. He just turned 8.I would love for him to find more help.
My 3 year old autistic daughter has an Ipad and she loves it. But as a parent, using the Ipad as method of therapy or teaching tool is the last method I would use. Autism is a social & communication disorder - I would think having children engaging with a person instead of the Ipad is more important. Using ABA, natural environment teaching, & good old fashion speech therapy is the best way. To my daughter, Ipad is a fantastic toy - much like the nintendo 3ds is to my neuro typical nephew.
I agree with the natural environment stuff! I have autism too, but I can speak without using a device. In my experience, I had good old fashioned role playing and LOTS of practice
I have a 4 year old grandchild who doesn’t say any words. He uses my iPad, I’m trying to figure out which app would be the best to help him communicate?

El I-Pad está haciendo maravillas entre nuestros niños con autismo :)
i wonder why i was diagnosed with autism, i was not like these kids when i were young, and i got the diagnose when i was 18, maybe i don't have autism, because i feel sorry for the real ones who got autism/asperger syndrome i've been seeing on youtube. the only thing that can prove that i could have the diagnose, are maybe a blood test or brain scan. not a psychologist. but in sweden they are very bad at these thing's.
... then how do you explain the prevalence of Autism in undeveloped countries where children do not watch television or play video games? Autism happens in every part of the world.
I dont want to try and judge the way anyone brings up their children but autism doesnt happen by children watching tv programmes. Autism is a condition from birth or injury. And if your child had autism im afraid you dont 'recover' from it, its not a disease.
It will be so nice when People First Language takes hold...please say people with autism, not autistic people. (like you'd say people with cancer, not cancer people)
Excelente. Soy profesora de Educación especial y trabajo con niños autistas.En nuestro país los recursos en las escuelas públicas son mínimos. Por favor me pueden decir cómo puedo tener acceso a esos recursos en idioma español.
Don't you think we're becoming too dependent on technology, up to a point where we stop talking and socialising normally? I'm not being rude but I'm just a bit concerned for autistic kids. They'll become dependent on these apps and if the device switches off or gets damaged, who knows. Just think about it for a bit. Please.
Honestly the iPad is good for those with nonverbal autism; however, those who can talk should interact with actual people bc we don’t talk through a tablet every day
@paul8kangas and i say it's genetic. me and my bro were vaccinated. he is considered normal in the global view, am the one with the mental illness. it's genetic i was obviously the unlucky one.
+Nicole K. iPads are sold by the company "Apple" and a quick google search can reveal your closest store. Or, alternatively you could click this link here ---> www.apple.com/shop/buy-ipad/ipad-air to purchase an iPad from Apple's official website. I wish your granddaughter the best of luck!
did you get a second opinion? autism is not curable. your son was misdiagnosed if you "got your son back". with intensive therapy, autistic children can improve skills and learn new ones, but they will never reach the same levels and rates of normally developing children.

I'm an ABA therapist and I have seen wonderful things with the Ipad. It is an awesome therapy device!
This just amazed me! Another reason to be thankful for the amazing technology we have!
Technology is the future for communicating to people with autism. As a pre-service teacher, I see iPads being used in all the field placements I have been in. I just hope all people with autism would be lucky enough to get an iPad
The iPad has really changed things for me , I learn just about something new every day with the iPad as an individual with ASD x
This is amazing...... this helps Autistic children communicate by a touch of a screen. 25 years ago, even just 10 years ago, this technology either didn't exist or wasn't fully developed, and now it is.

My daughter received an Ipad as a gift recently and we are starting to use the same app too for communication. It is so exciting!!
I can’t believe it’s $250 to purchase! 😮

Amazing. I just can´t understand why most of the profesionals are against using eletronic devices for autistic kids.
visual is important for them to learn bit quicker. They don't have a grasping power just like normal humanbeing.

...why is this comment in third person?
@@qwertykeyboard5901 what do you mean?
@@WalkingDan You wrote part of it in third person.
@@qwertykeyboard5901 That's right, because my nonverbal son was being treated poorly by his school and I was expressing my frustration.
@@WalkingDan Ngl, a slightly weird way to vent frustration. But I digress.

I am using this video in Psychology course. (PSY 2012) 👍
That ipad 2 may not have helped my social skills, but it sure did teach me about the internet!
stephen hawkin didnt need a real human voice to WOW the world and look how respected he became

...fabulous news piece! But, when is the media going to learn about People First Language?!?
I glad that there are apps like out there for people who have it like me
@SharpieTheBlack Yes, I am. I won't deny it. In fact, I'm proud I am. Why be ashamed of something I had no control over in the first place?
really touching video
this very awesome app. great job for those who did that apps.
I really want one for my niece! She can't always tell us and she gets so frustrated!

Yep, those People has Autism so they Decided to have the IPad because they need to Communicate each Other.

Why is that app that josh uses 189.99 PLZ tell me
The price of that app is 249.99 with out a free trial it is a lot of money but it seem to be to work.
You need Bubcaps to cover the home button so the children don't press it to get out of the app :)
Oh boy, I can't wait for them to discover online gaming.
Syntax is different, memory management is manual, all methods are public, small ass library, my main problem with Obj C is the syntax
