Hey whatup Steven hope all is good with you. I love your channel and heres why, transparently. You are taking the time to record your jobs and let us know what goes down in each and every job. Much appreciated and keep it up!
Was sitting on the patio drinking a beer to cool off and I heard a snap and a loud grinding coming from my outside AC. And I'm like "uh oh, that doesn't sound good". So I finished my beer and walked over to listen to it better and as I got closer, I realized it wasn't my outside unit. It was the neighbors. So then I went and had a second beer. I can afford it. Mine's a Heil 1997, 2.5 ton. It kicked on after I sat down and sounded great.
That system is a 3.5 ton to 5 ton high velocity system. They run lower temperature and pressures than a conventional system. It looks like it's hooked to a 4 ton system and that's why your pressure look normal. Any way it cost more money than you would expect. The advantage is you can snake the ducts through walls and they are better at removing humidity. It runs high static pressure so don't think that to be wrong. Surprised to see one that old because they were not popular 25 years ago
@@throttlebottle5906 Those would be test pressures. I would expect those to be higher because many were built for 22 or 410. At twenty six years it would not be worth changing out the txv. The blower assembly and and core section are coupled together and can be change individually. Maybe? if you can find one.
@@throttlebottle5906 Price is relative because builders sub jobs, big companies finance etc. The unit is doing a house with a boiler and that is not cheap either. Probably around 3k per ton back then. It also depends on how many supplies with fancy terminations there are. Steve kept showing the rusty filter in the video. It was suspicious but no oil could be seen. It is always good to check the ports before you leave the job.
I had a system exactly like that, same brand, same size, same age. Last year it started to leak, this spring I had it replaced with an R140a system, vastly more efficient.
As long as you had to replace it anyway the new unit should use less electricity to operate. You have a hedge against power going up and it was a good investment. You have reduced your carbon footprint, saved the ozone and invested in your comfort. Good going
@@jazbell7 Many people spend 46,000 or ten times that on a car that depreciates to nothing in ten years. You would think they lived in their car, because they won't spend a dime on their heating cooling system.
For the very few that lasted 25+ years there were 1000s that died a week after the warrantee was up. Nobody remembers the dead ones, they only want to point out the survivors and claim how much better the quality was. I work on lots of old systems and I can tell you the quality back then was shit. 30 years from now people will be ranting about how much better the quality was in 2020.

That Unico system is modular. You can just buy the coil module 4260 for 410-a and won’t have to replace the blower module (unless you want the variable speed). Not cheap, even for just the coil.
I had to add gas to my own unit for the first time in 19 years. My liquid line drier rusted out. The core sniffed ok. I was lucky and got by with just pumping down the system and 2.5 lbs got it running without it tripping the freeze stat.
Glad I have a buddy who does this. Mine has a small leak and evry yeay I have to add 1-2 lbs of R-22....Shit is expensive...but he gives me a break since I help him out with gas powered equipment!
We have a fine company that fixes our units at the hotel i work at which I am the engineer. One unit which is the pool area climate system which also dehumidifies had high head pressure but very low, low side. It was freezeing at the lower end of the evap coil. While the top was warmer. They claimed the liquid dryer was clogged. I also mentioned the blade to the condensor fan was out of balance and needed replaced. I went on vacation. Came back and found not only a new fan blade on the condensor but a new motor as well with a custom run cap installed with electrical tape dangling under the fan. Great work. Also came back to find the same conditions with the pressures. This time though the lower portion of the condensor was warm and it was hissing. I called them back. Told them to come check there work. They did and said they added more 410 and it leaked from the schrader valves. Ok. 3 days later back to where we were. After seeing what BS these clowns did I said the hell with this and took a rubber mallet and smacked the reversing valve. Oh my back to working.. So, I do what I feel like doing in my pay racket. But when I say enough is enough I step in. Total bill $1500 for not much. I call this guy if he was in my area but he's not.
He knows its usually a corrodable point thats leaking not the continuous copper. But rarely, like I found recently a friend had a 50 year line set touching corrosive metal causing a slow leak. The company only found leak AFTER suggesting AND replacing his entire system.............testing needs to be way more common.
J B - It would work, but the problem with doing that is you create a mixed refrigerant (illegal, but who cares) that is also much harder to reclaim (not illegal, but expensive). Even worse, any tech risks his license doing that so he’s never going to mark the unit to show other techs 407 has been added. Now, if some other poor schlub tech comes along he’s going to end up dealing with the trashed/mixed R-22, and if he adds it to a half-filled tank, he just destroyed all of it (a huge dick move). If it’s your house and you’re going to deal with disposal of the mixed gas, fine, but don’t do that to an innocent customer.
Since the system is about to get replaced, why not dump some stop leak in there? If the customer is committed to replace it, why not offer a $200 option and see what happens?

Topping off the system without repairing the leak is knowingly venting refrigerant into the atmosphere

Unless there is a recent change there is no EPA requirement to fix the leak on a residential unit.

can i buy a smaller container of R-22 to fill my unit or is the size of that green tank you carry around about the smallest?
You need a certificate to buy r22. I have seen smaller cans but not in years. Maybe online?

How can you reuse the lineset? Its old r22. You cant mix that with 410a. A new lineset has to be ran.
Mark Adelman you can flush it with R11

I heard they will stop selling R-22 on 1/1/2020. how long can can R22 systems be filled? five more years with reclaimed r22? I live in hot Tennessee
Use the same line set when there is a leak somewhere, have to check the line for a leak first no? Thanks for sharing Steve.
Yup. Replace the line set. Pretty easy now with silver 8 solder
