- A tutorial on knots that I use for bushcraft. I am not an expert really, I just use these knots a lot and this is my way of doing things.
Do not use these knots for climbing or any other dangerous activities!
Following knots are covered:
- Clove hitch with slipped overhand knot (mastwurf mit slipstek)
-Trucker's hitch (spanner mit slipstek)
-Tautline hitch (stopper stek)
-Bowline (palstek)
-Butterfly (schmetterlingsknoten)
-Sheet bend (schotstek)
-Highwayman's Hitch / Falconer's Knot (anbindeknoten)

The first knot you use to attaché ridge line, I think you call it a version of a Siberian hitch...this is the best know t for this use I’ve ever come across!
Used it for years backpacking.
It is so fast and simple, cinches, holds ( I use a long tail so won’t come undone) and you can use the extra security of running the tail through it feelreally the need.
Finally, it is quick release.
Trucker hitch is my fav knot to tie, but this Siberian hitch is so simple but works so well.
Thank you.
I learned this from you in 2012 and used it for every ridgeline I’ve tied since. Never once issue.
I just subscribed to your channel after watching your fantastic tutorial. Thank you for teaching such useful knots in such a clear way. Very well filmed as well.
gudgengrebe thanks for that!
Brilliant video Mr Swiss Gear ! Thank you very much . Great way to tie the bowline as well. Best wishes from the UK.
Do you not know what knot not to use?
This is probably THE most illustrated and well-explained demonstration of how to do this. Absolutely fantastic. Thank You!
I've watched this video a number of times and never commented. Really well done and you can tell you're comfortable with rope.
Thanks!
Great job on explaining and demonstrating them. I really like your version of the bowline.
Best knot tutorial I have ever seen for bushcraft 101 and 102. Kudos!! Thank you!!
Nice selection of knots and nice directions. The spanner mit slipstek is soo useful!
The Sheet Bend is also good for joining 2 or 3 smaller ropes to one bigger one (or even the same size). Just bunch all three together and tie as for one smaller rope. Try it - its pretty cool!
This is the best and most simple to follow explanation on knots. Very well done.
this is the clearest video on these knots i have seen, thank you.
Best knot video on YT.
0:57 I have looked into this Anbinderknoten and what I have discovered is that it is called a node-knot or binding knot.
The node is basically the 'binder' part of the knot (anBINDERknoten). The binder in this knot is the part that is quick release, it helps to securely bind the knot around the pole or bar you're hitching to. In America this knot is often referred to as the HORSE KNOT as it is a quick way of securing a horse to a fixed point with the ability to be released quickly.
I agree. Very explanatory both visually and rhetorically. And it covers all the best knots there is to know.
10 thumbs up.
Best knot video I've see....I've made almost every knot on the first try. Thank you
Brilliant! at last a truckers hitch video that is clear and well explained. Thank you!
Hallo, das ist das beste, vollständigste und genialste Konten-Video das ich je sehen durfte! Grandios! Merci vielmal : ) Sepp
Every once in a while I refer back to this video to learn new knots for different applications. It's very useful and very well done. Thanks for making and posting this, buddy
thx mate, glad it's useful to you
Thank you very much for your fine tutorial. This morning I found myself in a situation where I had to move a 500 pound safe up a flight of stairs. Using the knots in your video made the job go very easily and safely.
Best instructional video on knots I have seen. thank you.
Thank you for making this video. You made it look simple. That is greatly appreciated.
This is the best video on knots I saw good job...
The first knot is also used in falconry, amazingly falconers call it a 'Falconers knot' usefull because you can tie it with one hand.
Excellent tutorial using very clear explanations and nice close-ups.
Great knot presentation. Thank you for your time & efforts.
Fantastic video. I particularly liked your example of the bowline which is useful if one end of a rope is tied off or in someones hand perhaps you should explain the advantage of your method in any updated video you do.
@gssg9 thanks for the hint (the "bite"). I am not a climber so I dont know what knots are used while climbing... cheers
I've been using the "Siberian" for years now and never knew what it was called:) Thank you for a very instructive video *****
Thank you for your excellent video! It is complete and very clear!
glad it was helpful to you! and thanks for the nice comment
Good tutorial, very practical and you did well with the presentation. Very easy to follow.
my first exposure to your channel. Very, very good videos on knots. thank you very much.
One of the best Knot Tutorials!
Thanks for your Video! I learned the butterfly knot here!
But an information to the bowline (Palstek): the little end should always be on the outer side. It is a sailor knot to secure a ship f.e. and if the little end is comming between the line and the tree (Poller) you can not remove the knot. So the rule is: keep the little end short and outside.
The first knot is very similar to the Highwayman's hitch (apparently used to tie horses reigns to a halting post, working such that if the horse tries to pull away the knot only tightens)
Good video, thanks. Your version of the tautline hitch is called the Tarbuck hitch it is popular with climbers.
Excellent tutorial.great visual and very well spoken. Thank you.
2nd most useful video I watched today. The first one was also about knots. Your's was a lot easier to follow. Thanks for the knowledge.
@Colhane Thanks Dave, it is much appreciated.
really excellent knot video - so hard to make them clear and you've done that very well
great video! been trying to get the tote line hitch for a while. so far love that hitch but i don't always get it right on the first try. love the German subtitles for the knots too! pretty awesome!.
Thank you so much! That was a great clear and informative tutorial! Im gonna practice each one!
Excellent channel! I love looking nature, explore and decompress...
Super useful video, great work! I've recently bought a DD 3x3 tarp - so going to practice lots of these! :D
Excellent job there mate. Really helpful thanks!
The knot at 6:16 is a rolling hitch (with one extra turn on the first part of the hitch).
Excellent demo on tying the bowline. I have been using that knot for nearly 40 years now, but have never seen it tied as you did it. Well done indeed!
With the sheet bend, if you find you are having any difficulties with it slipping free (not all "ropes" are good ropes with "grip" o them. Some re very slippery ropes and tie extremely poorly), then simply run that thinner line around the loop again and feed it back under the tension holding part which locks the knot. Simply put, you go round twice, instead of once before pulling the lines tight.
MrTatts64 thanks for that, mate, much appreciated!
It's called a taught line hitch as well
I prefer Blake's hitch or a Farrimond friction hitch if I want quick release
Excellent tutorial!!!! Very clear and informative. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!
@SwissGearLabs The anbindeknoten and the stopper stek (w/quick release) are two knots I'm going to start using. Instead of your Butterfly knot I use a Pursik knot for many different things. See my "Tarp Setup" video @ 1:07. Although for a damaged rope the Butterfly knot would be great to use. The Bowline and the Sheet Bend are two good knots to know also. I've put your video in my "Knots & Rope" playlist along with other good videos about this subject. Take Care :-))
Excellent tutorial. Added it to my favorites.
I always forget how to tie these knots and I always come back to this video. I love this video it's great. thank you for sharing.
Fantastic instructional video. Thank you very much for taking the time, I've learned a few things here.

Thanks for the video, i'm going camping this weekend and will practice my knots!
@Waldhandwerk Another brilliant idea Sepp, "Knot-Man" ----- Perfect! :).
Thank goodness I have you to come up with great ideas. That way, I don't have to use too much of my own brain, which lets face it, is very, very, limited and quite simple :).
Take care my friend and have a good week.
Extremely well done! Makes me want to go camping.

well spotted, you are correct. I always use it my way and do not have problems it holding nor being able to undo it after strain. does it really make a difference in holding strength and if yes, why? thanks mate
Great video. I always come back to it.
