Knots for Bushcraft, Camping and Canoeing. Six of the Best Knots I Use.

- In this video, I will be taking you through the various knots and cordage that I use.
Although there are lots of clever modern labour saving devices about today taking the place of knots, I prefer the simplicity of just tying a knot. There are so many to learn and all have different uses and applications for climbing, boating and camp use.
I tend to use just a handful of knots and make them work for whatever I need them to do. I think it is better to know just a few, that you can tie without having to think about it and these knots work for me.
I have broken the video up into two categories:
Knots I use around camp - the larks foot, the taut line hitch, the prusik and the arbor knot.
And knots I use when canoeing - the bowline (the cowboy version, with the tail on the outside - I obviously didn’t listen enough when I was in the scouts!) and the classic clove hitch.
There are hundreds and hundreds of really good tutorial videos on RUclips, so if you are interested in learning some knots, go and take a look - its great fun learning!
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

You did forget the strongest and most resilient knot in the world though which is of course the Christmas lights knot. Cannot be tied manually. Needs to form itself over 11 months. Impenetrable.
🤣😂🤣 Priceless.
Awesome knot, but I know a better one. Just go fishing with a lady you want to impress and you will remember it, I`m sure. Hint: reminds you of a bird`s nest.
Hahahaha!! I know that knot only too well! #christmastreelightrage
Loved all the knot jokes😂🤣..know those knots all too well🙄
That was very very funny,,,, True...!
Who in blazes are the 9 people who didn’t like this video 🤔?? What’s knot to like about it? Well done Simon. Best wishes to Maggie 🙏🏼❤️🐶.
We miss you when you'r knot around.
Tensions build up when there's not enough videos
I agree🇸🇪
"Knot around" Love it! Gives me a good idea. May I appropriate it for a card for someone that's not feeling well?
I am in complete a cord with your sentiment!
@@jonahtwhale1779 Another good one! :D
Don't sell yourself short! As a beginner this was easily the most helpful guide I watched: short, concise and with a pletera of different kinds of knots/hitches!
I know this is now 2 yrs old, but to this 55 yr old it's pure gold. Was never taught knots in school here (US) but i firmly believe they ought to the world over. Thank you! 🍺
Never was a Boy Scout, but I'm finding that learning different knots to be kind of fun and practical in my older age. This was very helpful!
To knot or not to knot, well, no question, we missed your video. Stay healthy and safe everybody.
Thank goodness a "Knot Expert" who knows the proper and commonly used terms for describing the actions and parts used in knot tying! However be careful with the bowline for trying up a boat, unless it is under constant tension it can shake loose. I have retrieved many dinghies due to this knot failing. Better to use a 'round turn and two half hitches'.
Nice video Simon 👍, always good to refresh on knots. And not end up doing, multiple Granny knots 🤣😜🤪. So sorry 😟 to hear about Maggie, hope she feels better soon 🙏.
another great video Simon, Ihope Maggie gets well soon. . keep em coming. . and stay safe. . Al.
Awww Simon,, nice to see you again,, Sorry to hear about Maggie's stroke of bad luck.
Great knots video. I thought for sure I would have seen a loop tied with the figure 8 knot.
Nice to see you again,
Like you said it. There are lot's of videos about knots, but your video makes it seem simple howto. And I don't need to know 100 knots. Just the ones I use. Just a few.
PS: those are the knots I use when camping ;-)
And thank you for the padge of yours. It arrived this week (I wasn't home when it came). Now I just have to find a place for it.
I have this video downloaded/saved on my phone for when I’m in the woods outside of service.
Nice Vid Si, Glad to Hear Maggies on the Mend 👍
Simon's back and went completely knots 🤣😋 funny bowline story I learned the snake who comes out the lake and around the tree.. anyway nice video hope Maggie has a quick and good recovery! Stay safe and well🙏
😂😂😂 Thanks Tim!
Prayers for Maggie. May she heal quickly and completely. And thanks for the video.
Would anyone have laughed if I had spelled that "heel". Come on.....that had to be as funny as at least a couple of the "knot" jokes. LOL (Not joking about wishing her the best, though.)
😂😂 I’d have laughed! 😁
Thank you! For being the only man to tie a bowline, and placing the tail on the outside of the working loop, instead of inside the working loop. Seems everyone and their dog ties a bowline and puts the tail right in the middle of load zone and I dont know why..
Maggie is. MUCH more important than a video. Glad you're back and she's getting better!!
Such a pleasure watching your videos...
Sorry about Maggie. I know you had trouble with the teaching profession, but you’re a natural! Look forward to each video. Tim
Thanks for that Simon, I will get to practicing those.
Hope Maggie picks up.
Simon, please take no offense to my observation. I was a very nervous and stressed kid. I won't site reasons here. Like you, I had the same nail-biting habit. I overcame it by saying "NO" out loud when I realized I was doing it. It is almost always a childhood started habit. Most that watch your videos may not recognize it. It is however all too obvious. You had the want and determination to craft and build your beautiful canoe. This I envy you. I know for a fact, if I did it, anyone can. Give it a shot, you possess the determination, you need only to recognize the triggers, and redirect your actions to these triggers. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Hey Simon..you should make your own product of carry tutorial cards. In a emergency most people become stressed and so easily confused with some things as simple as knots. Carry cards as I call them are just reminders. Should be simple pictorial of basic knots or skill sets. You have a group of followers that would be interested in your take on these things. Something to throw in the olde bag that will be a resource under stress. Since your in the humidity, could make them water proof...another spot on vid...as always...may your feet be sure on the trail, your campfire warm at night and your trail tales be true!
Get Knotted with Simon a Bloke with the itchy buffy in the woods.
Here’s hoping Maggie continues improving 🙏🏻
Hahaha - thanks mate!
glad to see you back I already have your patch sewn on my pack
Thanks Allen! Glad it got there too okay 👍👍
Hope Maggie feels better!! Excellent video, very useful!!👍
Oh no. Hope Maggie will be right as rain soon.
Was wondering about the gap in videos and glad to have you back.
Incidentally I tried learning all about knots some time back and you would think I'd be an expert by now, right? Well, I'm a frayed knot...
Ahem.
Such a good vid. My Late Father was a Royal Engineer, he made sure I knew how to tie ropes. I do miss my Dad.
Good demo of knots, thanks, I hope all is well at home. Take care.
Nice one Simon a brilliant refresher on knots thanks very mush Mark
"Useful to know? Knot half" thanks for sharing Simon. all best.
Very good Simon even the knotty comments below. Look forward to the next one
Plainly demonstrated and informative. Beautiful canoe!!!
I love how you explained the clove hitch. For some reason that one never seemed intuitive to me. I think because it’s always been explained as a knot that has to go around an object.
But seeing a free floating clove really clarified how the knot is actually working
Thanks!
Good to hear that Maggie is on the mend, I hope she makes a speedy recovery. Take care and stay safe!
Lovely knot demo Simon I hope maggie get well soon.
Very interesting, glad your back hope Mags is okay 👍
I wish all the best for Maggie and you, too.
Greatings from Germany
Nice video this one Simon very informative for anyone new to tying knots. And sorry to hear about Maggie. Wishing her a speedy rexovery.
Cracking video as always Simon
Best wishes for Maggie! I’m knot going overboard on this but thanks for showing how you put them to use! 😉
😂😂😂 Cheers!
Hello from California, USA.
Poor Maggie, glad to hear she is mending. Glad your back, enjoy all yours and Kent Survival videos. Discovered your videos while recovering from knees surgery. Now I am addicted to your videos.
Thanks Ken - I hope the knee is healing up well! 👍
Great video! I hope Maggie gets well soon!
Family and pets come before any video. Maggie is a big part of your family so she deserved the love and care she obviously got. I hope she makes a full recovery. I love watching your videos. Take care.
Thank you I already know those knots but still learned something I like the idea of using a byte on the taught line hitch it's so much easier to get it undone thank you
Great video and very easy to understand thank you. Whether I'll remember them all when I need to is another challenge for me though 👍
bugger !!!! hope Maggie heals up fully, bet the cold hasn't helped matters any
We’re glad to see you back Simon… You had us worried!
Another awesome video, Bloke.
I love the cow hitch knot so much. Incredibly useful. Now I’ll make sure to call it Larks foot every so often to keep people guessing lol.
Takes me back to my days in the cubs I new lots of knots then atvb jimmy 😎😎
Hi from sweden. Great tutorial, easy and useful.
Great video, and some very useful knots to know. Thanks!
Nice one Simon good knots and easy to follow. Used my kitchen table leg as a stick. Better to try these things at home rather than out in a storm. Love your videos. Sorry to hear about Maggie.
Greeting from Hong Kong. Thanks for your sharing. Good filming
Handy knots, Simon.
Thanks for putting the names of the knots next to a picture of the knot, really helps. Hope your wife gets better soon. 🙏👍🖖💃
Thank you for your interesting video! I really like the way you present them!
Thanks Simon for talking about various of knots. Sorry about Maggie I'll be praying for her to get well soon! Ur the best!! waiting for the next one.
Brilliant video Simon 👍Hope Maggie has fully recovered now. Stay safe.😷ATVB from sunny Malaysia 😷🏕🇲🇾
Thanks Simon for another video!
Best of health to Maggie.
Stay healthy brother
Cheers was struggling with keeping ridgeline taut, that knot is perfect
Awwwww...sweet Maggie! I hope that she will be fine with so much tender loving care. And nice knot tutorial. ATB!
Thank you. These should be handy. Best to Maggie - she's a good dog. I hope she'll be ok soon.
Thx Simon in the Woods. Different people explain things differently and use different camera angles. Your no-nonsense explanation was good for me to catch these. I plan to come back and hear them again. Liked the picture of tying the canoe to the post.
Oh, poor Maggie! I know she's in your safe hands!!! Thanks for all the great info Simon!!!
Glad Maggie is on the mend.
Only 6 knots, I like that. Sometimes it is overwhelming when I pick up my book o' knots.
Thanks for the videos
Congrats to everyone learning these. You have taken the first step in becoming a tenderfoot level Boy Scout. I've used these knots because you can used them since way back then. Well done for teaching these. They really are the best. None of my tents/tarps have tension adjustors. One you know these few you can skip a ton of useless hardware and even ratchet web strap tiedowns. ...One I'd add is the pipe hitch for fixing line to smooth pipe and the knot will hold where it is tied and not slide on the smooth pipe.
I like the byte on the tautline. Never seen it done that way but really cool.
Great stuff. I'll definitely be referring to this one again.
Love and hugs to Maggie. So sorry to hear she's hurt. Thank you for the update and video
Love learning knots
That was a quick bit of digging. Let the revision commence! Thank you Simon!
Great Great video! Very well made. Thank you.
I’m an ex scout. Knowing knots is so beneficial.
Excellent video, now off to practice 👍👍
I love your videos. Thank you!
The brain and Hands, the greatest tools we got, thanks for adding to the brains bit Simon 👍
this is honestly the best knot tutorial i have seen in ages, thisvideo is not a full on knot jammed video its a simple here is a knot this is how you tie it and thats it, shown in the simpliest way possible and its now my go to if i foget any, bc its so easy to just follow along.
I'm a little rusty. Good refresher. Thanks
Hey Simon. I hope that Maggie gets well soon and that you can go on an adventure together again. Thanks for your clear explanation and film work! Very educative!
And the best bit bout the bowline, no matter the amount of pressure on the line it’s easy to undo. Just break the back!
Fantastic video. Helped me a lot. Thankyou 😁👍🏼
Excellent knot video. Thanks.
I like the fabulous knot you are wearing on your head. That is definitely the champion of knots, right there.
glad your back . I went totally knots :)
😂😂👍
MAGGIE- NO. I hope Maggie recovers quickly. I love seeing her with you. Thanks for the lesson and explaining the ways to use these knots.
Really enjoying your channel. Great!
Knot nerd here, always interesting to see other folks goto knots.
Sorry to hear Maggies been a poorly. I hope you're treating her to some steak to aid recovery.
All the best
Al
Cheers Al!
Hope Maggie recovers quickly, love seeing her with you.
Great vid. You make it look so easy
You just solved my problem with Tortline Hitch knot 🤗 and thank you for that!
Very informative and most important useful knots! Not fancy things for showoffs!
Great job! 👌🏻🔥
I hope Maggie is feeling better. All the best.
Best & simplest tutorial i have ever seen on knots! Thank you. Pray that Maggie is well soon
That was good 👍
Hope Maggie gets better soon
Well done my friend, I sure enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work
The prusik knot got me out of a tree well when I was a kid sledding. Half inch rope from sled and boot laces. Probably saved my life.
Nice job Simon!
Great video, good info, but I felt the absence of Maggie.
Here, we use a knot called "nó carioca", a kind of modified truckers hitch, a traction knot, used for bushcraft, truck drivers, 4x4 adventurers, campers, fishermans. A usefull and versatile knot...
I wish all the best for Maggie and you. Greatings from Brazil
🇧🇷
To differentiate the loops, I was taught to call them underhand and overhand loops, though most of the knots I use seem to work with underhand loops. It also makes a difference if you do the loop with your left or right hand.
I really hope you don't mind if I point out a problem with your bowline. Technically, what you showed really is a cowboy bowline, with a right hand underhand loop and the working part coming out the side.
A true bowline uses a left hand underhand loop and the working part goes down through the centre of the bite as well as the loop as the final step. The difference is that the loop cinches down on the working end in a bowline, whereas only friction of the loop holds the working end on the cowboy. In repeated slack/shock cycles (such as a boat bobbing on an ebb tide) the cowboy may slowly slip through.
Fun fact, the earliest known working example of a bowline is thought to be in the rigging on the Egyptian King Khufu's Sun Ship. Found in an excavation in 1954, it had been tied about three and half thousands years before.
I'm off to learn the arbor knot. The few times I've wanted to lash something together is the dumbest I've ever looked, and I've never corrected the deficiency...
