  • My final submission to the 2020 Tool makers competition. Making a shop built coaxial or coax indicator designed by William Todd (link to plans below). Being an amateur hobby machinist, this is by far the most precision and complex build I have ever attempted. I hope you enjoy and be sure to check out

    That spring only needs to be strong enough to center the device when horizontal

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  4 года назад

      That is what I found as well. The piece I used works, but is too strong. I would like to find something that would provide equal pressure around the diameter, which would require a much thinner spring for the space. The piece I used actually did push the bearing off it interference fit after a bit of run time.

    I have a chinese one and it flutters as well. It's pretty hard to eliminate the flutter and it doesn't really effect the accuracy. I tried rebuilding the axle but it didn't help much. You can buy spring steel on Ebay and make your own spring. Good video!

    This was interesting to watch. The one thing that may be limiting your success is the “wobble” in the main body and indicator assembly. This could be a result of the internal spindle taper having some run out, or the various diameters on the main shaft not sharing a common axis. Music wire can be purchased in coils, and wound to suit your needs. Mc Master-Carr is a great source for many goodies.

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  3 года назад

      It is likely a combination of factors. In the videos of the build I actually improved it from what it was which I think was 10 or 15 thou. I do plan to revisit this to see if I can get it better but honestly with the machine I am pretty happy with 2 thou runout. Especially considering it seems many commercial offshore versions share the same tolerances. But I still think I can make it better. Check out the actual build videos, it was a learning experience for me. ruclips.net/p/PLAHFt4_nmEpojhlMK2r_MrR4_lYOpYFGz

    You could get or make a bellville washer that will make the pressure more even all around and help with the flutter.

      @@theeddies no, it's not about probe. "roket" simular to cam-shaft & have circle line in part wich touch "body". It's clearly on plan, but haven't size.

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  2 года назад +1

      @@no1se706 Oh I understand. The designer, Bill, did not define that measurement in the plan. As long as it is a slight curve, the size is not important to the function. The curve only needs to provide adequate clearance for the the rocker to move smoothly on the body. In part 1 of the video series you can see that I basically made the curve by eye. The dial is not making absolute measurements. It is only a reference measurement so the curve on the rocker is not critical.

      @@theeddies Thanks. Yeah, I'd say like 98% of it was all finds. The rest was insignificant BS knick knack and housewares items, so a total wash there. it's good for a Friday. Gonna do a shorter day tomorrow with a final hour of Tubs (totes, bins whatever) of random leftovers for $2 each, then a $1, then free, then back to trash as we close down and clean up. - Your video was excellent btw. The project itself is sweet, and awareness of the plans generously provided is also a win, but when it comes right down to it... I think the gold is how you rose to the occasion of providing video entertainment. You brought an enhanced element of production, breathed in a welcome dimension of humor, and successfully stepped out of your comfort zone to conquer a scripted component, none of which are easy, but all of which you put over the top, and did so with a (perhaps still developing yet) potent drop of your own original identity. It's a benchmark demonstration of the video product you are capable of delivering.

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  4 года назад +1

      @@johnstrange6799 Well that was quite a compliment, thanks man. I went out on a limb and spent quite a bit of time. It is not something that I plan to do all the time but it might be fun once in awhile. The green screen of the indicator was especially challenging. The green has to be as consistently lit as possible, minimal shadows. But the worst is that the part is slightly reflective so it was picking up the background color. There are millions of gamers that use it all the time, but in a tight shop getting rid of shadows is tough. I had about 4 lights all around it, plus all the shop lights, and was holding a flashlight to catch any stray shadows as it turned.
      Do you expect tomorrow to be be better or did you sell all the high dollar stuff already?

    I am subscribed to your channel for some time manly for the motorcycle and engineering vids and enjoy them. After just 1 minute this video was ruined for me when saying the "Chinese still rip off" insult. Hasn't just about every nation ripped off another.
    The US, UK, Japan along with many other countries all produce the automobile and the internal combustion engine, did any of them design or invent them?
    Intellectual-property theft is carried out by the US, UK, Russia, China and most nations and has been done for millennia and only ever cried about when there own is stollen especially when improved upon.

      I don't do political on this channel. There is enough of that out there right now. The entire intro was just a joke or parody. I often throw out stupid sometimes slightly inappropriate jokes, but they are meant in fun not politically. It is the type of humor (or lack of) you would have if you brought a few people over to hang out in the shop. I appreciate the thoughts and that you felt strongly enough to comment. If you watched enough of my stuff you know I stretched a little here and it won't appeal to everyone. I hope you stick around for another beer.
