This footage was recorded around 2000 or so, when he was around 40/41 years old, I think he was born in 1959. Today he is around 64/65. But so or so: It was pointed out by Jesse Glover but also Bob Bremer, that Tommy was as fast as Bruce when it comes to hit something in punching range.
But when it comes to closing the gap, means moving from A to B, it wasnt even close, Bruce was much faster here. He could hit something 5 feet / 1.50 meters away in around 8/100 of a second, he could close like a world class fencer. From a standing position Tommy's punching speed was like equal, yes, but his kicks are slower and his closing the gap is also slower.
Here an Explanation by John R. Little why Lee was so effective and nobody was able to touch him:
"Bruce was almost of a different species. His speed. He had the speed and the delivery system to get in and out before you could execute. He was not a normal person, he was not a normal martial artist, his nervous system, his muscular system, his neuromuscular system was wired in a way that ours typically arent."
This view is confirmed in the testimonies of world class martial artists and combat sport athletes (fighters) such as Joey Orbillo, Joe Lewis, Hayward Nishioka, Wally Jay, Jim Kelly, Louis Delgado, Dan Inosanto and others. All emphasized when Lee moved at maximum speed, no one could punch, kick, grab him, but also could not avoid being punched, kicked or grabbed by him.
And that's what Tommy cant or couldnt in his prime. His moving speed how to get in, land a hit, and get out again was nothing near. And yes, in his footage you see this. His strikes are incredible fast, but the way he moves from A to B is great but not out of this world.

Where have you got the information Tommy isn’t as fast at closing or kicking? Because Jesse never said that. He’s said Tommy is the closest he’s ever seen anyone come to Bruce’s attributes and abilities.

    • @chrisbach1533

@@axelstone3131 Glover gave a detailed interview in the Paul Bax forum in 2004. Someone basically wrote like Tommy has even surpassed Bruce, and Jesses reply was something like that:
"Tommy's fists start to move as fast Bruce's. He is more flexible in the legs, but I dont think he closes as fast as Bruce could close. And Bruce didnt telegraph. Tommy does. It isnt much of a telegraph, but it is there."
That was the short version of it. Since it was 20 years ago, I dont remember any single word, but it was like that.
And you can see it. I saw most clips of Tommy and Bruce, and Bruce was simply faster at kicking ("bruce lee fastest kicks ever seen by the world", or 2-3 kicks in Longbeach) and how he moved from A to B was visible faster.
And like you said, Jesse never said Tommy was in totality on Bruce's level, but the closest to him he'd ever seen.

@@chrisbach1533 well, that was a long time ago now. Tommy is better than he was back then. That may be true yeh. But a lot of footage of Bruce is grainy and blurry. The best footage is his movie stuff.
Regardless, Tommy is the only one who comes close to Bruce that’s for sure.

I love how people think Tommy’s videos or students videos are sped up, love it! It’s a great complement, they can’t face the the real thing… you can do it to, stop typing and do 1000 punches 1000 kicks a day in compliment with pad work , tension band training , weight lifting , and you can get there, but not many want to put up the work 😉 I’ve been with him a couple times in some seminars and saw it myself, also he’s student JP is not far behind, same as Thomas. And all that shit about mma and ufc, there is no need to entertain people and put up a show for anybody. Martial arts “martial = war like” so art of war no combat sport… but respect to the warriors in the ring 🫡 they are a great inspiration as well.

In addition in one of the SF seminars there where two of Bruce’s students and we where able to talk to them after one of them was named Richard I believe, retired cop. He was telling stories of he’s days in the force and with Bruce and him himself told me, Tommy is as fast as Bruce and was very impressed I could see it in he’s face, he didn’t own anything to the man. On top of that Tommy is a really cool guy and very approachable, he’s just very passionate in he’s art 😁 beleive me don’t beleive me , I really don’t care 🤷‍♂️ I’ve been there and saw it myself. Here’s the thing, JKD has a philosophy for a reason. These moves would just be used because he can’t figure out what else to do. They are to engage and dictate a spectrum of responses from the opponent. Ultimately ending in something that can damage or incapacitate the opponent. What’s being displayed is but a tool in the arsenal of strategy.

I have watched dk woo in the ring against a boxer. He has very fast hands just like Tommy carruthers and looks great against a stationary target but dk woo couldn't put it together and was hopelessly outclassed by a boxer. Bruce on the other hand did spar with a boxer and got the better of him and he said so on record.

Actually Bruce sparred with two very good boxers, Joey Orbillo and Ryan O'Neal. Joey was a top 10 (some say nr 5) heavyweight contender in the mid 60s, he fought Jerry Quarry in 1966. And Ryan was the long-time boyfriend of "Charlie's Angeles" Farrah Fawcett and a very good amateur boxer, and he sparred Bruce on the set of a movie directed by Blake Edwards. Joey and Ryan were on lost ground.
