    There's nothing wrong with martial arts entertainment, however if you're looking for actual martial training, specifically Jeet Kune Do, there are some things you should be very careful to avoid.
    It's important to say that we are not out to demean or put people down who are excited about training or spreading Jeet Kune Do. It's always important to look at what is being presented as actual training, so that you can avoid some serious pitfalls. Taking advice on martial movement from an unqualified individual could be detrimental to your training and your body. For the following examples, don't just take our word for it, use your own critical eye to evaluate the movements you see.
    ---------
    Always think hit
    Simplicity
    Efficiency
    Use your longest available weapon to the nearest available target
    These are the four principles that Jeet Kune Do is built on.

    Hey this is Tim Witherspoon 2X heavyweight champion of the world. About a year ago I came across a book which had a collection of Bruce Lee's writings in it called Tao of Jeet Kune Do. I was fascinated by his insight and use of old school boxing it was really mind blowing. It is sad because I truly believe he was a man outside of his time. Today I could really see him revolutionizing boxing and even MMA although I am not an expert on that MMA. He was obviously extremely influential during his time but today he would have even been greater.

      Hey, champ! Loved your comments on the lack of technical skill in Fury/Wilder 3-spot on. And you're right about Bruce: He was VERY influenced by the sweet science. A chunk of his notes was paraphrased from a 1940 boxing manual by Edwin L. Haislet; he collected tons of fight footage, studying things like Ali’s footwork and Dempsey’s drop-step punch; and he worked with professional heavyweight Joey Orbillo. In fact, by the end of his life he’d stripped down his approach to where his hand techniques were very much like old-school boxing mixed with fencing. Speaking of old-school, one of his favorite tricks was stepping on a person’s foot when he closed, but you didn’t hear that from me, lol.

      Tim , good to see you here ...Remember your fight with Frank Bruno. You were a good champion......The best source to learn JKD is not from the Tao of JKD but from the book BRUCE LEE'S FIGHTING METHOD. This is much more realistic & comprehensive in respect of body mechanics, applying economy & showing how Bruce integrated boxing as a tool at different ranges as he did with fencing.....The trouble with the Tao of Jeet Kune Do is that it was posthumously compiled notes of Bruce possibly by Linda which doesn't reflect the evolution of the Art....In JKD Bruce actually made a very scholastic assessment of different tools to decisive target at different ranges & he transcended the Wing Chun he evolved out of by realizing it was far too down the centre & the way in which stronger body mechanics in boxing could kill it with POWER and with ANGLES .....Before he passed away a few months ago at 93 I was talking extensively to Bruce's friend LEO FONG....Leo witnessed this evolution in Bruce's thinking when Bruce was alive ..He knew him for 12 years & he showed me letters displaying that Bruce respected Leo's opinions on boxing. Leo said that in the 1960s he would go round Bruce's house & find Bruce watching 16mm films of Muhammad Ali's fights either in a Mirror or from behind a projection screen so he could observe Ali's style in REVERSE. Leo spoke to Bruce the day after the Wong Jack Man fight on the phone & Leo said he told Bruce how as a boxer he would KO Wing Chun 'Paper Tigers' with simple direct Left Hooks ....Another thing that is interesting is to see Bruce's copies of boxing books like Haislet's Boxing,,,,& the books by Driscoll & of course Dempsey. With Bruce's notes & comments in the margin one can deduce much of Bruce's thinking of how he was integrating boxing & how it did away with a lot of the Wing Chun as being axiomatic to JKD for reasons related to economy. Bruce would say for instance that Boxing was DEFENSIVELY better than Wing Chun because the footwork enabled you to step to the outside to avoid getting hit by the cross...Wing Chun being too down the centre cannot do this of course.... In his margin notes in the books Bruce would sometimes challenge assumptions, but other times he would transcribe otherwise verbatim passages from these books changing just a few of the technical terms to be in line with what he was developing. Bruce Lee's fighting method is the best investment. There have been many others who have contributed to the debate on JKD but for reasons of economy in my humble opinion TOMMY CARRUTHERS is the single most significant figure to emerge.

    You're absolutely right, these influencers do not have JKD experience. DK even mentioned in an interview that he doesn't practice JKD. A lot of so-called JKD practitioners don't even teach the real JKD, but a watered-out version of it. The JKD that was taught in 1967 is not the JKD that Bruce had evolved in 1973. So yes, they should take a closer look at the teacher and see him move and teach. And nowadays, who the teacher was taught by doesn't mean anything, because it says nothing about what the teacher is actually teaching. For example, he could be certified by XYZ teacher but is teaching something completely different from that what he was taught. JKD in reality has more to do with Fencing, Physics, Biomechanics, and Boxing. So chose carefully and good luck in finding the right one. 😊

    Its so dissapointing, because when you understand jkd you know how effective and dangerous it actually could be and these people turn others off from looking at it themselves. The trapping is especially effective in certain grappling positions, like when I'm mounted on someone or in their guard; its easy to rain elbows and punches right through their attempts at guarding (when they don't train trapping)

    • @bobhebel4116
      @bobhebel4116 2 года назад +3

      True, simplified hand trapping does work and really well too if properly setup. The great Rob Kaman would often successfully use it in his fights, as would other elite Dutch-style kickboxers. Thanks to the influence of one such striker, Henry Hooft, who runs a gym in Florida, hand trapping has now seeped into high-level MMA. We can see a recent example of this at work in the Kamaru Usman vs. Jorge Masvidal UFC title fight: Usman (a former student of Hooft) throws a series of jabs to read Masvidal's reaction. After he sees that Jorge's preferred defensive manoeuvre is a same-side parry, Usman takes advantage of this by extending his left arm as if to throw yet another jab. However, instead of completing the jab, Usman quickly grabs Masvidal's right parrying hand to remove that obstacle out of the way, thereby opening a clear path toward Jorge's face. The end result is a devastating right cross knockout.

      JKD is not a style that can be taught by anyone. It's Bruce's personal philosophy that was incomplete because he died young

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD  Год назад +7

      Yes and no. There's a difference between style and individuality.
      "Style" could be better thought of as a method of cultivation, a training program. That is what Jeet Kune Do is. Bruce Lee's following of, teaching of, and expression of Jeet Kune Do can never be replicated. That's where the individuality comes into play. Nobody can replicate mine either. Or yours.
      They can follow the outline and develop themselves. Outline is style. Personal development is individuality.
      There are lots of fitness programs out there that were put together by individuals. Others follow the program. But again, there is always the individual.
      My point is that if you don't start with the program and someone who has a solid notion of how to implement said program then maybe it's not the real deal. In this case, that "program" is Jeet Kune Do.

    • @vikctorrkreedd6418
      @vikctorrkreedd6418 Год назад +2

      @@evolutionJKDSometimes this is all very confusing, when it's quite simple. In fact style, individuality and expression are all connected( a 3 fold unitary pattern with an order of precedence). A style is a particular manner of action. A distinct presentation or appearance. A distinct "way" or manner of expressing. These definitions cannot be argued. In this case that "way" would be of the intercepting "fist"( Fist being the entire human make up, seen/unseen) based more so off of emotional content, but not excluding style, rather trumping style after those basic foundational principles have been set in training (as you stated training is style) which in turn creates and or reveals the individuality. I feel like Bruce wanted so badly to get ppl out a robotic format vs. true application way of thinking amongst other ideals, he kicked the literal concept of the word style to the gutter, he needed to stretch it as far away possible from its counterparts like a rubber band to get his point across, it happens like that sometimes. He knew they were intertwined but in order to get his point across he needed to be firm in his convictions. I won't keep going unless you'd like to further this topic. I have more examples of this. Btw,
      after all a mathematical expression is not an equation, its actually just that until it becomes an equation, and this is where he was headed and also reached. This is such a fascinating topic thank you gentlemen for your insight. I respect all you've accomplished and done. This is just my view. Take care Brothers.

While there are some that are "mcdojo" or "bullshito" practioners claiming all kinds of things, not all are full of shit. Research should be done on a person(youtube videos are not a good source) before placing judgement. Jake mace is another martial arts practitioner(kung-fu) and he has real experience. Like anything on the web, there needs to be a degree of credible knowledge on subject matter or extensive research from credible sources. There are also "practicioners of martial arts" that will make a video discrediting other practitioners. Its just how it is. The experience speaks for itself.

      @mattnobrega6621 Holy $hit!!! This is an epic keyboard warrior comment that you've posted!!

      1) It literally says "JKD body weapon" in the video clip I use. (Look, I can use quotes too!)
      2) Not discussing wing chun. Yeah, martial arts are about "practicalities in a situation". Kind of a thing. (Look, I used quotes again!)
      3) Was this purported "book" about him an autobiography? Was it written in crayon? (Those quotes indicate sarcasm.)
      4) Dude....it's BULLSHIDO. Saying "or 'bullshito' practitioners" is incorrect. No T. (That's me using quotes inside of quotes.)
      5) The irony of you saying "research" when making a comment on a "youtube video" is not lost. (Two quotes. Sarcasm implied. Look at me go!)
      6) Jake Mace? Seriously? Makes me question you putting "Marine veteran" on your about. I always check to see if people have any videos. You don't. US Marine Corps or just "Marine veteran" somewhere else? (I'm getting good at using these quotes!)
      7) Yes, there should be a degree of "credible knowledge", and you would know I have said "credible knowledge", if you'd actually done any "research" about who I am. (I used the same quote twice in this one. That third one was just a bonus.)
      8) "Its" in this case, should be "It's". (It's not just about the quotes. It's also about the apostrophes.)
      9) This experience says, "Thanks for giving me material for future content."

      @evolutionJKD  Год назад +6

      Not quite. Yes, how well the student learned is important, but the instructor was once a student once too. So the instructor is important. You at least have to start with a possibility of learning. That's lineage.
      That whole JKD is learned from books thing or it's just a philosophy is garbage. Bruce, like all martial artists, explored information from multiple sources. Books being a major source in his lifetime (no RUclips!), he drew new perspective from an extensive library. He also trained. That means actually working the movements and actually testing them against people who could challenge those movements. Kind of the whole reason he created Jeet Kune Do. It was to change his method of training, his cultivation, so that he could perform better.

      @thomasjanellemarcus3287 4 месяца назад

      You forgot the Bruce also loved the Ideal of and implies fencing into martial arts. He read that from a book how to research proper form. Like most of his fitness came from fitness influencers. Mr Olympia was big when he came over to the United States and seen Arnold Schwarzenegger. Lou ferrigno and others. Wing Chun has been changed since the 1500s the original art is almost lost. Cuz it was performed by rebels who practiced on boats which is why they stand the way they do. You shouldn't critique while being seeded you should have a bag next to you or a wooden dummy that way you could show proper form an application on who you're critiquing. The whole point of martial arts is to be like water and to control the momentum of the battle. That is if you're applying it to real world scenario like military street fight or life or death situations. If you're using it for fitness or just to better your mind more stress relief what are all good applications. Then I suggest you worry about where their teacher came from if you're looking into the heritage in the background of the martial arts. But that's the one thing that Bruce Lee had a problem with when he was in China. Is who taught who and what martial arts were better and where the heritage came from and whose bloodline it was from and who was Superior. He took most of the wasted movement out of the martial arts and tried to apply his own martial arts with no wasted movement where you flowed and intercepted rather than reacted. Bless both of you guys and I appreciate your critiques in the different influencers who are clearly misrepresenting self-defense not just JKD as a whole

      It's great if you have perfect timing and can knock out every opponent with just one hit. The reality is that sometimes you just miss, whether by intention or happenstance. Sometimes (often) your one attack isn't enough. You guys are bullies that just make assumptions based on 1 video
    The others aren’t the best. Master wong doesn’t claim to be JKD he’s wing chun more
    DK Yoo - good body mechanics but not a fighter
    The rest are not too good
    I personally know Emil he’s a 40 year veteran and has a very close relationship with Bruce lee family
    He’s trained with Dan inosanto and Taky kimura
    He’s genuinely a good guy
    You guys can have a voice and opinion that’s fine
    I even discussed with Emil himself that his videos could be improved his ideas aren’t always the best. BUT he is a good man
    He’s trained with the best of the best
    He’s friends with the City of Brighton and Hove ABC boxing gym - feel free to look it up if you want confirmation
    It’s home to Chris Eubank
    But honestly I know you are going with the trend of Putting others down to gain more views ….
    That’s all I got to say
    Good luck 🤞

      Sorry you had to hear news that someone you like isn't all that you thought they were. Or what they presented themselves to be.
      There's a difference between an influencer and an instructor.
      I would wager that I've received more JKD training in a week than Emil has in his whole life, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say a month. That's not including any of my other training or experience over the last 35 years.
      If you put a critical eye to both of us, you'll see there is a huge difference.
      And maybe it's just that you, and others, haven't been exposed to higher level people yet.

      This isn't rocket science. Bruce didn't die that long ago. JKD isn't that old. If you can't trace your lineage back to Bruce Lee, then youi're a fraud. That whole "it's a concept, do whatever you want" thing is something made up by fakes and frauds to perpetuate themselves, because they don't have any authentic movement or insight.

    A good measure of how good an instructor in JKD or ANY martial art for that matter is how good his students are. Often times in demos the instructor will have a student perform a single attack then freeze and then the instructor will blitz the feeder with quick strikes to show how fast and powerful he is-and while it might be impressive to the spectator , not so much for the combat athlete.
    Does DK Yoo claim to be JKD? I thought he was Systema or something like that. Either way, his impressive demos didn’t translate at all to his boxing ability, at least not in the Bradley Scott fight. His boxing skill wasn’t even at the amateur level-maybe he got better once he trained under an actual boxing coach/team

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD  Год назад +1

      He became well know for a viral video of him being very flashy. And he listed off several martial arts. Systema and JKD among them.

    • @bobhebel4116
      @bobhebel4116 Год назад +1

      I personally doubt that DK Yoo has had any serious training in Jeet Kune Do. However, there indeed are many subpar JKD teachers out there, so it is possible that he studied under one or more of them. For what it's worth, DK Yoo is considered a joke in the Jeet Kune Do community in Korea. One of the top Korean JKD fighters, Ha Chul, who operates the HaSaBu channel on YT, dismissed outright Yoo's fighting ability when a commenter brought him up in conversation. I believe this was a few months before Yoo's infamous boxing match against Bradley Scott.
      If you want to see authentic, high-level Jeet Kune Do skill and instruction (including lots of sparring), I recommend searching for the Jason Lee and Ha Chul (HaSaBu) channels. Both are elite 3rd generation JKD stylists under Patrick Chan, who has a Ted Wong lineage.

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD  Год назад +1

      Um......why would you leave the page of a 2nd generation guy to go see a couple of 3rd generation people?
      If DK Yoo trained under one of the Korean guys, any of them, then it was subpar. It's all movie posing stuff from those guys.
      The Korean "JKD" guys are just Tae Kwon Do guys pretending to be Bruce Lee. It's all stage combat with poses and hands down and no real pressure from any of them.
      Which is pretty bad if those guys are dissing DK, because they can't fight either.
      They look flashy and cool, but there are better stage fighting people out there.

    • @bobhebel4116
      @bobhebel4116 Год назад

      @@evolutionJKD I would have to respectfully disagree. Jason Lee and Ha Chul are legitimate Jeet Kune Do instructors under the Ted Wong lineage. They are not Tae Kwon Do stylists... I'm not sure why you would assume that they are. They are also among the most capable fighters in the broader JKD community. Both have proven this time and again through actual sparring, including against professional MMA and kickboxing fighters. Search the Coach Yang channel for the sparring session between Jason Lee and the UFC fighter Kyung Ho Kang of Busan Team MAD. It's light sparring, but Jason easily hits and intercepts Kang, whereas Kang is having difficulty making any clean contact.
      The way Jason Lee and Ha Chul move -- the "fencing" style, which emphasizes footwork, speed and power -- is how Ted Wong taught their teacher Patrick Chan to move. It's the kind of agile, cat-like mobility that Bruce worked on with Ted in their public and private martial art sessions, and which Ted dutifully passed on to his own Jeet Kune Do students.
      Why don't you invite Jason and Ha Chul to do a podcast with you? You could also extend a friendly invitation to some guys from the JKD Concepts and Non-Classical Gung Fu branches, and also from Wing Chun. I'm sure that would be very interesting to your viewers. I would certainly tune in to watch where you and your guests converge and differ in opinion and why.

    • @evolutionJKD
      @evolutionJKD  Год назад

      Well....It's my channel and I'm kind of an expert. I don't hold any of those guys in high regard. Ted has never impressed me, so how would anyone of his lineage impress me? Let alone a couple of third generation guys.
      There's a reason I'm putting information out there now. Too many people out there sharing versions of Jeet Kune Do that wouldn't hold up in a bar fight let alone against a skilled martial artist.
      Bob...there isn't anyone in Korea representing Jeet Kune Do. Unless, you think JKD is stage fighting. Which a lot of people seem to think. Especially from the Ted Wong lineage.

      Great question!
      They may not have been "new" students actually. Beginner or inexperienced might be better to describe them. I'm not sure if I do call any of the people in the video who are sparring new or not. I think we are talking about viewers who are new to martial arts. This is a warning video to them. Experienced martial artists would never train with these guys.
      Looking at your channel (nice stuff BTW!), maybe think of someone holding their instrument. You very likely would be able to tell in moments if they were experienced and skilled with playing that instrument. Pretty sure you could watch a video of me playing the saxophone and tell right away that I don't know how to play it. Even without sound! It's the same for us.

      I think it’s that people can’t actually see the movements. Or don’t understand movement well enough to discern good from bad. I had someone ask me if I could tell just by looking. I said yes. It’s my job. I do it every day. But most people don’t they see something that is flashy like in the movies and just assume that it’s good.
