Jared does so much to help other drummers without coming off as a know it all. He is humble and generous. I hope he realizes all that he wants from his drumming efforts.
This technique is essential for drummers to figure out as soon as possible. Every thing you played as singles before, are suddenly twice as fast. Now building fills has gotten limitless. Thanks for the video.
i started to drums without anyone teaching..im just discovered my own talent when i listening on the radio..im so proud that i have my drums talent... no need to go on drums school..but i am the drummer who does'nt drum set but i practice everyday..!!
Hey Jared, just started playing drums. Practice rolls quietly in the corner of the commuter train. This video looks casual but it has a great mixture of advanced playing, basic exercises + humor. Cheers.
The dave weckle video is back to basics, Bought that years ago and it helped me alot, I;ve been playing with fingers instead of all wrists ever since and using the double technique alot. it also teaches the double stroke on the bass drum aswell.
In a later video, Weckl actually changed his mind on accenting the second stroke. He mentioned that it gives it more of a natural flavor (or something to that extent).
Jared's personality has improved a lot. I remember seeing his first few vids and ppl comment, "He's a great drummer but got a personality of a lemon." Haha! Tnx to ur vids. Really helpful. Double strokes.Phew! Not a quick fix... Not overnight... Patience. That really helps, Jared.
what you said at the end, was what I needed. I practice doubles now since one month with the push pull technique and I made good progress with the technique feeling more natural every day. I am still veeeeeery slow but I know it will speed up when I stay patient. I still have a long way to go and the body needs time to imbibe the motion. as you said: it will happen. be patient. everyone can do this!
Great channel - I haven't played in over 10 years... I'm just getting back to it and I've found a lot of your lessons to be helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this and share your passion.
I subscribed to you guys around the time you put your first video up with intentions of looking at them to learn drums, and i got a kit about four months ago, and I've made so many great strides by combining these lessons with seat time, and i've gotten to the point where I can jam to a wide variety of music, from hardcore music to even some jazz. thanks so much for everything!
Nice explanation and video. I suggest to not only show technics slow and fast but going from slow to fast and reverse. And I would be happy to see lessons with traditional grip and/or technics shown for matched and traditional grip.
Jared, you're so modest and humble, and such a nice guy. such a nice guy. You sound great. You have to know that is awesome playing. Thanks for the post.
If you can play double strokes using just your fingers with no rebound, it lets you learn to control the stick when playing double strokes on surfaces with rebound. This helps eliminate unintended accents, and allows you to play both notes of the double stroke with the same power/velocity/sound etc. Try starting with playing Double strokes on your thighs which have little rebound, but more than a pillow
Finally! I have been using only this technique to do doubles, and I was worried it might be wrong or smth, becouse in every drum lesson video, when someone explains the double stroke, they just say "well, just hit two times in stead of one", and I didn't understand how could one do it so fast with just the wrist. I could do it as fast with this technique, just wasn't sure it's the right way to do it, so thanks!
This technique is great. Fredy Gruber also taught a snap on the second stroke to get that evenness. It's not a whip, just a bit of wrist twist. Other than the mechanics of doing it, from a sound perspective you are striving for the sound of an old Huey Helicopter's rotors. If you can find a loop of that ( not an Apache, a Huey) just sit and practice your doubles to that sound. Do it for hours and when you walk away, you will have that stroke feel in your brain.
Something that I've noticed that's built my speed is working individual fingers: - hold the tip of the stick in your hand so the stick is under your forearm - use 1 finger at a time to hit the underside of your forearm with the stick - focus on long, thorough strokes, don't focus on speed (you're practicing a movement pattern and your brain needs to learn how to do it properly so you will play it without having to think about it) Do this for each finger for 1 minute/day (to start with).
This is something i'v been trying to figure out for a bit, thanks to your video, i now KNOW HOW to practice this myself. Thanks Jared for all the great videos!
do the same video on a pillow. the ultimate double stoke lesson. I never knew about the 2nd accent method. Very cool. my problem is always the left hand as the right hand is always faster since im right handed. so the left hand is always quieter and lazier and my right is perfect. so when i get into a roll you it always sounds off. then I tried your method and use that 2nd accent on the left hand and it sounds equal now. thanks man. when I do it this way
Also,, A very simple effective way to practice this is with the hands in Unison rather than alternating strokes-- When you do this you have essentially a shuffle beat- then to make it more interesting and beneficial you can practice under this obstinato different foot patterns again in the shuffle idiom.
Jared, you don't need to use your fingers to make your double stroke roll sound even on the snare drum. If you use your fingers, you are just making your roll uneven. Accenting the second note of a double is useful if you are practicing shuffle beats, because you actually do need an accented secondary tap. However, you make have to use it somewhat on a floor tom, especially one that is tuned low. What you have to do to get a smooth double stroke roll on a snare drum is to play THROUGH the drum, not "to" the drum. What this means is that you break your wrist more, as if you are playing to a surface that is 3" lower than it really is. This forces you to break your wrist more, then you work with the rebound to pick the stick up. This can be done using only your middle finger and your thumb. Playing this way is more relaxed and natural. The idea is to make the stick do the work, not your fingers. If you would like, I can make you a video to show you what I am talking about. I see this very thing discussed everywhere on RUclips, and accenting your secondary beat is simply not the best way to learn this. At tempo, you are not using any finger snap whatsoever. Playing one technique at a slow tempo, then changing your technique at faster tempos will only confuse your students.
@MikeStann the main difference is the finger technique is supposed to require zero wrist or arm motion in the downward direction; of course this doesnt apply to orchestration and this technique is more of a moelleresque thing that switches from larger to smaller muscle groups repeatedly; i.e. forearms and wrists to fingers. the finger technique after the first stroke is all controlled rebounds as apposed to this technique which is like the first and last parts of a 3 part moeller stroke. cheers
@littleps3dude well I'll tell you what youll need- youll need to master chops between legs and hands youll need to know how to work double bass fills in variant tempos youll need to master drumming around your drumset and youll need to master double stroke rolls around your drumset the "cobus fill" is like so- Double kick, middle tom, floor tom, three times, in two seconds. good luck mate
@littleps3dude it's a very fast 16th note triplets fill based on chops between double bass and the middle tom and the floor tom. which means- 123 4 5 6 dbass tom tom dbass tom tom
If you mix these in with para-diddles, para-diddle-diddles, and a balls load of triplets, it sounds so sick. Also, I wouldn't recommend just dropping the stick and then going in for another stroke. What you want is two clean strikes. So I say use a lot of wrist, arm, and fingers like the dude said near the end. Strike the drum twice with one hand, then the other, and keep getting faster and faster. Eventually it's realllllyyyyyy easy. This worked for me awhile back, so eh.
Try inverting the roll, putting the accent on the second stroke. This is a great wrist/finger work out for smoothing out open stroke rolls. Sort ones to start... use the pull-up technique. This first one is Three beats of 16th notes ending on the 4. (It feels good to really accent the last note) RLLRRLLRRLLRL or LRRLLRRLLRRLR This pattern is two bars of trips with a flip each way. RLLRRLLRRLLR/LRRLLRRLLRRL Enjoy!
really appreciate the videos and glad that you still do them!! I'm really struggling with double stroke (and I've been playing for like 5 years, shame on me!!) in that I'm not very accurate with them, and I can't seem to keep them in one spot, they sort of flurry over the drum or hi hats. Messy. I wonder if there's a video on advice on controlling sticks :)
I had some bad habits on the guitar that i learned early on and it took me a long time to fix.I played with strain in my wrists and i had terrible problems and pain in my whole arms because of it.I don't want to make the same mistake on the drums that's why i am looking to build a solid and comfortable technique so i don't hurt my self again.
cool one, you might do a free drum lesson of how to go along with a song, how to keep on time and how to change from fill to fill. hopefully i made me understand! keep drumming \m/
Hey Jared thanks.... You really cares for other drummers.... Beginniner or amateur or whatever ... Thanks alot.... I still finds difficulty with my left wrist when rolling .
I'm obsessed with double strokes and I use them when I go really fast, and when it comes to fast double kicking, I use heel toe to go at faster speed rather then single strokes. Thank you Jared you have taught me well. I think I would have been a shit drummer if it wasn't for your lessons man :) Keep on Rollin
I don't know if you've done this, but I'm kinda interested in how to build single-stroke speed to help with the basic rudiments. I can only go so fast doing Paradiddles, but I can't really go past that because I can't do the double right or left. Same with Swiss Army Triplets and things of that nature.
aw,lol.the end was kinda sad :( but man you´re doing great stuff and show people how to play the drums and all that in a nice and easy way.that´s more than some could wish for.thanks for making the vids, you´re my favourite out of all
Check out Thomas Lang video and double strokes. He does the second note accent too and it sounds absolutley perfect! Definetly some one to check out with stuff like this!!
i am a german guy and i can understand him - so whats the matter? its the way he speaks. all you great drummers out here, load up some stuff and let us see ^^
Ultimately you are right, but in terms of pure technique I stand by what I said. Look at the height 7 angle of the floor toms versus his seat height.... I don't think he will get as good a tone from those drums as he should because he will be striking them at an angle all the time. The rebound (hence speed) will suffer too.
Jared, can you do a video lesson how that our left hand becomes good as our right hand. With right hand I can do a double stroke very very fast and sounds good. But with left hand it is so hard to do double stroke and ... everything. I dont know what should I practice that my hands are equal. Please, if you have time to make a video or send me a message on youtube what to practice. And, merry Christmas to people from FreeDrumLeson, and to people who loves them:)
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, Jared! Thank you. (I wrote to you today about the videos not playing on my android...) Great video Jared, I've been using this method for a long time and it's great. I would have wanted you to make a lesson about some linear stuff, but some easy ones.. I looked on some Linear drumming and it's very cool. Thanks.
Hello, and thank you for the video. I have a question. What's the difference between this method and the method you using in another video, the one with the finger - Finger Technique Drumming Exercises (Drum Practice Pad Solo Included) . Is it that, in this method you take advantage of the bouncing ? I mean you can have the same speed with the both methods right? One must be easier than the other. Thank you.
Brother I love what you did in this video. I'm still learning my boubles and I have successfully started to get them smooth and its easy to do now but my question is how to play what you just did in a beat. I have practice the things you shown us and I'm loving it.
In short, yeah, I do the same thing so I really struggle with stamina and keeping things going. I want to be able to comfortably do 16th notes single-stroke at 120 bpm for minutes before I'm happy with them and it's impossible with my arms tensing up!
Trying to strengthen my left hand on my double strokes. Notice you play match grip I like traditional grip. I have been practicing Paradiddle diddles really accenting my left hand would like your opinion on that love your videos
@DogAteMySticks They have a bunch on the website and most of the stuff to have more speed and such on the double pedal is the same as single (heel/toe vs swivel/slide, where to hit on the pad, etc). Also check out their polyryhtm LIVE video; the one with a cover from Meshuggah.
Been a drummer for 25 years and it's great to hear someone actually explain the necessary technique to make this work. Thank you
i started to drums without anyone teaching..im just discovered my own talent when i listening on the radio..im so proud that i have my drums talent... no need to go on drums school..but i am the drummer who does'nt drum set but i practice everyday..!!
love watching your videos at 0.5 speed! you sound so drunk!
TarttelinGamer thank you so much.
TarttelinGamer Watch at 1.5 speed and he sounds like a cocain junkie :D
TarttelinGamer Funny.
+TarttelinGamer Hahahaha, you just made my day
+TarttelinGamer absolutely phenomenal.
Hey Jared, just started playing drums. Practice rolls quietly in the corner of the commuter train. This video looks casual but it has a great mixture of advanced playing, basic exercises + humor. Cheers.
Bro I’ve been listening to you since 2003 and you’ve been one of my favorite drummers since I was 15 years old bruh!!! 🙏

Hallelujah!!! ive been trying to build up my double stoke roll speed for ages, been trying to get it up to speed for my grade 3 exam, thanks
Great lesson! Great job slowing it down and showing the double stroke in full action!
Nice explanation and video. I suggest to not only show technics slow and fast but going from slow to fast and reverse. And I would be happy to see lessons with traditional grip and/or technics shown for matched and traditional grip.

best consistently good drum videos I've seen.
Another great lesson. Thanks for taking the time to do this...greatly appreciated

Hey Jarrod, Keith Carlock is a beast I hope you saw the '05 Modern drummer fest, one of the best and Keith tore it UP!!!
That is one shakey snare. But you're the best teacher on youtube, thank you so much!
this guy is way to modest. DUDE YOURE A FREAKING BEAST ACCEPT IT!!
Another sweet video! This comes from the early Billy Gladstone methods...it's very efficient
I like your style, hope I will learn where you, you are a good teacher.
@littleps3dude it's a very fast 16th note triplets fill based on chops between double bass and the middle tom and the floor tom.
which means- 123 4 5 6
dbass tom tom dbass tom tom
Definitely one of the hardest fundamentals to master, but it is the cornerstone rudiment to becoming a great drummer!

cool one, you might do a free drum lesson of how to go along with a song, how to keep on time and how to change from fill to fill. hopefully i made me understand! keep drumming \m/
those cymbals sound soooo sweet!!!!!!!!!!
You should do a video on what to look for when bying a drum set/ drum equipment
Hey Jared thanks.... You really cares for other drummers.... Beginniner or amateur or whatever ... Thanks alot.... I still finds difficulty with my left wrist when rolling .
Quote " And if i can do it believe me everyone can do it , like look at me right ?! "
I REALLY LOLLED!!! great lessons btw
Excellent stuff man! Really helpful - I've seen the Weckle video you mention and your explanation is easier to grasp!

here's my thumbs up.. lol nice tuts.. this can help me and other new born drummers..
i think a lesson on how to do hertas on the double bass would be a cool lesson!
good drum lesson man
Very good lesson!
You're my favorite to learn from I'm having a really hard time with drum roll,I am using an electronic set.I am on day 5 hehe ,
Check out Thomas Lang video and double strokes. He does the second note accent too and it sounds absolutley perfect! Definetly some one to check out with stuff like this!!
your tips help alot ..thanks
look at you? your like the best drummer ever!! yeah, look at you!
i am a german guy and i can understand him - so whats the matter? its the way he speaks. all you great drummers out here, load up some stuff and let us see ^^
thank you for your video sir.. i learned much in drumming..
im jecar panumpang from Philipinnes..
just had a drum epiphany. thank you!

your the man bro, awesome teacher. thanks for these great drum lessons.
one about how to practice to build up speed in double bass, and also how to co ordinate hands with feet
thanks you so much jared!!
Thank you for your very detailed explanation. Instantly learned how to do this and instantly 10x better drummer. Seriously, thanks
Absolutely my favorite
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, Jared! Thank you.
(I wrote to you today about the videos not playing on my android...)
I wanted to learn the EXACT hand technique for the Double Stroke roll, as the stick bounces all over the place due to the nerve damage in my left hand.
I'll practice this slowly....for however long it takes to get control over the stick.
** If anyone hears a 5 bpm metronome clicking...that's me practicing. LOL ;)
Great job Jared as always.. nice free vids keep it up
Dave Weckl, "back to basics" is a really great video to get in-depth with double strokes :-)
Here is the ideal.I am a guitarist of 12-13 years and about 1-2 months a friend drummer left his sticks in my house and i started hitting my pillow with them.I got so into it i have been practicing singles, doubles and paradiddles everyday on the pillow because i have been playing music for quite some time i was aware of the great drummers and heard that buddy rich used to do it.I am interested in playing Groove and Death metal on the drums. Can you recommend me a basic technique foundation dvd?
Great video Jared, I've been using this method for a long time and it's great.
I would have wanted you to make a lesson about some linear stuff, but some easy ones.. I looked on some Linear drumming and it's very cool.
Thanks.
Teach us about what to do after paradiddle and strokes!!
This is what I need to learn. UGHH Im so behind the times on drums!
THANK'S FOR SHOWING YOU SKILLS,DJ C-SMOOTH
Helped me figure out some tricky drum parts that required this technique! :D
THANKS A BUNCH! :)
those drums sound fucking amazing.
that floor tom sounds amazing man!
The first doubles lesson to stick w/ me. I get this. Thanks dude.
In short, yeah, I do the same thing so I really struggle with stamina and keeping things going. I want to be able to comfortably do 16th notes single-stroke at 120 bpm for minutes before I'm happy with them and it's impossible with my arms tensing up!
When I do double strokes I always slip back into paradiddles
Haha, a habit
same
Same
Same
Trying to strengthen my left hand on my double strokes.
Notice you play match grip I like traditional grip. I have been practicing Paradiddle diddles really accenting my left hand would like your opinion on that love your videos
I just love yr drumming cause it helps
thank you for the humble and very helpful lessons! you're a star!
Hey what in-ears do you wear? Have you done videos on what headphones/buds are best for drummers?
Thank you!
Loved the video. It's given me plenty to work on. Thank you!
