Regardless of gender it does happen but not all the time. Generally speaking stay with friends and family never go alone regardless of what gender you are or where you're located in the world anything can happen to you. It's why you never go to other countries alone, never go to a friends party alone. I mean recently where I work a dude snuck into the toilets and spied on the girls claiming to have lost his sister... Again it can happen to anyone of any gender in any location, just gotta keep your eyeballs open and defenses up.

Surfer669 - No. That’s been a thing long before this year. I’ve seen stuff saying that at practically every con I’ve gone to over basically this entire decade and heard of it before that. It started many years ago due to a ton crap that happened with cosplayers at a big like anime con (I think it was Anime Matsuri) and it came out that this treatment towards them from others had been a thing for multiple years which was kept hidden by the ceo (revealed to be a major creep himself) until that big incident unraveled it.
The phrase has been around since basically forever, but it was massively popularised by several big cons adopting it as an official slogan/anti-harassment-campaign since 2014.

a friend told me that if you attend, it's just safer to just reject or ignore people requesting for photos with you. It sucks that taking photos with cool cosplayers are part of the fun, but creeps like them ruin it, like they should know better not to touch those areas. I won't be surprised the guys Aki mentioned did something even worse in their lifetime. If you have a friend that exhibit that kind of behavior, it's time to have a talk with them and hold them accountable.

That last story with the attempted groping really made me uncomfortable. I never got sexually harassed physically or groped (I guess) but I had enough close calls to make me terrified. Either way I try to avoid going to crowded areas alone as much as possible because the few times I nearly got groped made me scared. Just thought I'd share my own stories since Aki shared hers and you probably will never see me at Shibuya on Halloween ever after watching this video.

It totally depends on how you personally react to it. Here's how I look at it; you are basically invisible in a crowd, its when you're by your self you grab other people's attention.

I remember this exact same thing happened to me, I was dressed up as a witch and I too had a very tight corset and this dude and his two friends asked me and my friend for a photo. of course we said yes because we were very proud of our outfits, but as we went to take the photo, (my friend is in a very skimpy cat costume) one of the guys wraps his arms around both of our shoulders and attempts to grab our breasts. Luckily we caught on before this happened and called security. But it was a very unfortunate series of events.

Something like that happened to me at an anime convention...I was a Silent Hill nurse and I guess people thought it was okay to grab me and to lift up my mask to "see if I was pretty." There was a group of guys that kept following my friends and I and would try to take our props so we would interact with them. They tried to make us do weird voice-mail and creepy photos. It was very scary because the mask I made made me have a very short peripheral vision and I couldn't hear that well (also only saw out of one eye). We eventually got really pissed and you have to stand your ground.
