Band I was in played support for them once in Berlin. We drank their wine, they lent me their spare amplifier since mine broke down minutes before the gig. Great guys, and they played a fantastic show. Always loved this song.
Hi ! I am the biggest fan of GENE in France !!! Your teacher is part of music history ! Where does he teach !!? Salute him. ! Best from Paris Romain Novarina
i remember they got trashed by nme for being copying the smiths, At a time when oasis and blur were copying the beatles and pulp and suede were copying bowie. Shame because gene deserved better
For blur it was more the kinks. But anyways nobody copied anyone it’s called being INSPIRED. Every band/artist in history has been inspired by somebody else and despite most of them have been able to bring something new that wasn’t heard in the music scene
i dont think so , they split too fast , i was there , i lived the ERA , and they were great in a completely saturated market , worldwide OASIS won , EUROPE pulp won , BRITAIN suede won , the second place worldwide was for the still unbeliable genius mind ruclips.net/video/wfONbfAVWGk/видео.html
Yeah one of the truely timeless bands of the nineties!! A car that sped still sends shivers up my spine when i hear it!! I saw them at Reading festival 96, and they stood out from everyone(so did the stone roses but for the wrong reasons).
Aww, if only I could whisk myself back to 1995...for 3mins I almost was :) thanks for that, superb, from one the best 'under rated' bands of all time...happys days!! still haunted by you guys :)
Although I love Oasis very much, I agree..some bands aren't appreciated enough. if there was justice in this world, Suede would make it to the US Market and Gene would achieve the same success as Blur :)
Suede had about six months of popularity in the U.S., but they had their equipment stolen AND their opening act became much bigger than them over the course of their first North American tour. "Metal Mickey" did well on American radio, and the debut was selling.
@@kenpudsey6435How can you agree with something that was never said? They obviously took inspiration from The Smiths. But not in the same league. Not even close.
Hard to believe this song and the lp Olympian are more than 20 years old. One of the best from that time period and oh so underrated. Another victim of grunge I suppose. Very valuable lp to have. They are super rare.
They weren’t a victim of grunge, that genre was done and dusted by 1994 in the UK. Gene were just a bit unlucky to come up in a time when they were so many great British bands already getting attention and I don’t think their record label promoted them very well or gave them memorable videos they could have have done with.
I remember seeing their album in a record store. Was advertised as " If you like The Smiths check them out". Wasn't interested in another "wannabe" band. Now I finally hear them...and wish I'd given them a shot
How is this like the smiths?? Because the singer looks intense and holds the mic like moz? His singing is average, follows the tune loyally unlike moz whose vocal melodies were different from johnnys music, and the lyrics are so meh. No wit, no vulnerability.
I have seen both Gene and The Smiths playing live several times each and I can state categorically that apart from the four piece guitar - vocals - bass - drums configuration there is absolutely no musical similarity between the two. They were both great live bands, but that's where it ends.
Incredibly lucky, but if you don't see some similarity, you're aurally blind mate. It's not a bad thing to say they sound a like the the Smiths with a bit of Motown influence.
I wish I was the sort who never got tired of regurgitating the same old (and frankly, never accurate) sounds-like-The Smiths jokes; I could keep myself quite occupied trolling all these Gene videos. As it is, I can only voice my amazement at how great this song is and how I quite enjoy the little details not properly represented in a four-piece live band setup. In "Olympian," it's the beautiful strings and tinkly piano accompaniment. In this one, it's the haunting metallic echoes lying behind bits of the chorus. This album never stops impressing me.
I saw them in the larger pub in Aberdeen, Scotland (The lemon tree). One of my best indie rock live experience in a massive pub atmosphere. Epic ! I take the opportunity to give a little (french) kiss to Aimée who was working there that evening
totally agree with ya mate, only recently startin listenin to oylmpian again forgot how good your love it lies and a car that sped etc,etc were. top album top band!
I saw them live twice also. Once at the Honey Club, once at the Brighton Centre, East Wing. Fabulous band live. I used to see Martin Rossiter around Brighton all the time, usually in the Lewes Road Sainsburys pushing a pram!
You're quite right Lewis...you learn something everyday...for years I've thought they were from Manchester and it appears they hail from Wales...although they formed in London....Cheers thanks for that Man !
Me encanta esta cancion, junto con Olympian y Fighting fit, las mejores. Me gusta la mirada en el minuto 3:19, ufff I love the way he see at the camera at minute 3:19. So handsome! The best song (with Olympìan and Fighting fit)
Fucking love these guys. Such a shame they weren't successful enough to keep going. We owe them. This is a proper British sound, with a lot of subtelty and depth, largely absent from some of their more successful counterparts.
Band I was in played support for them once in Berlin. We drank their wine, they lent me their spare amplifier since mine broke down minutes before the gig. Great guys, and they played a fantastic show. Always loved this song.
What an underrated band...

Timeless music. This is just as good today as it was all those years ago.
the funny thing is the bassist is now my college teacher, love kev
Nathan Hunt Kev is such an awesome guy. Sam Newsom days ❤️
My exs son had Martin Rossiter as his music teacher. A bloody nice guy. Had a cuppa with him.

The brit pop from the late 80's and 90's were the best 🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧
Still love this band madly.
i remember they got trashed by nme for being copying the smiths, At a time when oasis and blur were copying the beatles and pulp and suede were copying bowie. Shame because gene deserved better
How were Blur copying The Beatles? Give me an example of a Blur song that sounds like they are copying The Beatles...
For blur it was more the kinks. But anyways nobody copied anyone it’s called being INSPIRED. Every band/artist in history has been inspired by somebody else and despite most of them have been able to bring something new that wasn’t heard in the music scene

Gene!
I love this band. They are Smithesque, yet so different.
Absolutely great! GREAT BAND! Great memories... still means so much for me.
Yeah one of the truely timeless bands of the nineties!! A car that sped still sends shivers up my spine when i hear it!! I saw them at Reading festival 96, and they stood out from everyone(so did the stone roses but for the wrong reasons).
One of my favourite albums of all time!
Such an underrated band
❤❤❤❤ xxx
I have had the privilege of seeing Gene three times back in the 90's - and I have the playlist from one of their gigs 😊 x
That beast of a bassist is my tutor at college
this band were the most important thing to me in 95 and 96, more so than blur, and i fuckin love blur!
sat on a beach in Crete for 2 weeks '95, listening to nothing but this and the rest of the Olympian album. Just brilliant . . .
Aww, if only I could whisk myself back to 1995...for 3mins I almost was :) thanks for that, superb, from one the best 'under rated' bands of all time...happys days!! still haunted by you guys :)

Saw them live twice in Dublin circa 1995/96 - best gigs ever; will always love this band!
Loveeeeee Gene, you truly deserved better ❤❤❤
The first album of theirs I still listen to all the time. One of my favourite bands not too far from the smiths.
Agreed..they were in the same league!
@@kenpudsey6435How can you agree with something that was never said? They obviously took inspiration from The Smiths. But not in the same league. Not even close.
@galetinm Your right actually, they were inspired by 'The Smiths' but not as good..still they did some great music.
What a masterpiece *__*
I went all of their shows in Japan. Best band ever. Miss those good old days in my twenties.
Wonderful track.
Olympian is the best Smiths album they never made.
Truly stunning! And guitar work is just amazing!
I dug out my vinyl copy of Olympian this afternoon... what a great band.
Yeah,a classic album💯
Steve Mason is still the most beautiful man in pop! How gorgeous is he in this video?
Kev is my college tutor! He's an awesome guy and a great musical mind.
I always loved this band's guitar work....very cool sounding.
@"Her fifteen years " is up there with anything by The Smiths probably the best song The Smiths never wrote
Great band,Great memories..
Bloody still brilliant! x
Not flashy or exhuberant but more on the melancholic spectrum of Britpop. Beloved for 27 years.

You are right, there are no similarities. But tons of identicalities.
Captain Obvious - but damn, twenty effing years ago?!? Where the hell did the time go?
That's his voice and a fantastic one. Xx
Please please come back to us your amazing. Xxx
Coincido contigo. Tanto Gene como The Smihts tienen temas como este que ya forman parte de mi vida y me llegan muy al fondo. Eso es música. Un saludo.

Man, my thoughts exactly. These little notes get me everytime. They kind of give the song a soul.
never thought gene sounded like the smiths! :P
pure bril - love the clapping - smiths
Yeah the clapping bit is inspired💯
The 1734th band to be dubbed 'The New Smiths'.
smiths, gene, blah blah blah. If I could play guitar as well as Marr or Mason, I'd be happy ( and a great guitarist ).
That's his voice and a fantastic one. Xx
