I've stopped the #shotfromhome, but will soon come out with regular challenges where you can take part with a chance to get your image featured in my video. For photos and camera settings: espenhelland.com/project/bird-photography-in-harsh-light-camera-settings/
Espen Helland I really enjoy the web page idea. Well done with the tiny adorable birds. I'd love to know about the relationship between those tiny tits and my local chickadees.
@@seantomlinson3320 apparently they're in the same family, Paridae, so closely related. I think they got their local name in the US because their call sounds like "Chickadee", is that right? Much better way of naming birds, you learn the name and call in the same go :)
@@EspenHelland Exactly! And yes, they say "chick-a-dee-dee-dee". It's been fun teaching that to my boys. My 2 year old in particular loves to say "chick-dee chick-dee". Fun but tough to photograph the little guys.
I have this strong light trouble a lot coz of where I live in Australia is pretty much “beautiful weather” year round with only a few weeks of cloudy rainy weather scattered throughout the year. Winter is my favourite coz the light isn’t as strong, but on cloudless days that doesn’t count for much. I try to photograph during golden hours, but it’s not that simple... often, it doesn’t leave enough time and some creatures are difficult to find then. I’m glad to see this video, i love dappled light and I often read about photographers who are disdainful towards people who shoot outside golden hours, so Thankyou for making this video.
It's great to find a shaded area when it's sunny as the light is still quite strong but fairly even and the backgrounds are a wonderful mix of light and shapes.
Another great video and helpful tips on shooting in sunny, warm weather. I’m not a morning person so I miss that morning soft, golden light. I’m going to try for more of that dappled light. Cheers
Hello from Nova Scotia once again on Sunday morning. Really appreciate these video’s. Love the dappled light and all the tips you provide. Have a great week - stay well and stay safe.
Yes, I did thank you I will be putting them in my vlog and uploading it in a couple of weeks because I already have this week's vlog ready. But yes very helpful thank you.
Fantastic video Espen, what a great tip for beginners, i do the same when it come's to little birds if auto focus doesn't work straight off, i focus on some thing close by or if i am using a zoom i will pull it back a bit let it focus then zoom back in. Cheers :)
Thanks for your vid. I'm off to teggs nose woods tomorrow. See if I can capture the pied flycatcher and the spotted flycatcher. Will try and use your tips then.
Hi Espen brilliant video and great tips and wow that pro capture feature is amazing you get some fantastic image's with it. Until next time take care and stay safe
Very well presented video Espen. Thanks for pointing out the importance of not stressing your subjects, especially nesting birds. I loved the two inflights as well. You are fortunate where you live at this time of year. It is now mosquito and black fly season here in Canada. The female insects are out in their thousands hoping to feast on anything, especially warm blooded animals like photographers. 😉
Great advice, love dappled light Summer Solstice 20th of June. Just gone over to Summer mode Macro, light weight gear and sun hat. Amazing Pro capture flight shots just need a tad more light for lower ISO. Happy long days
Fantastic vlog Espen really enjoy watching them, I’ve just gone over to a Eos M50 and having to adjust the way I take photos, but learning a from your vlogs looking forward to seeing the next one.
Good pictures. I've seen comments about Topaz being good for clearing images. In addition have you tried the focus limiter built into em-1 mkII software?
Thanks Brian, yes I use Topaz DeNoise it's brilliant! I've only tried the focus range limiter on the lens which can help a bit with trickier focus. I'll have to look into it, thanks.
Great tips, thank you. I’ve found DXO Photolab works well with Olympus raw files. Seems to extract a bit more detail than other software and the prime noise reduction is brilliant - so good that I can leave it on auto permanently.
You have an American accent, with a tinge of Scottish. Are you American, or are you adapting your speech pattern to appeal to our ears? Could there be an area of Scotland where the accent is very similar to ours?

Excellent video Espen. Harsh light number one reason most novice guys fail in giving compelling images !
Thank you Stafford Fuhs!
super cute and tiny bird ....
Thank you!

Absolutely :)
Great tips as always Espen for all of us who love to get out whatever the weather and don't always want to get up at the crack of dawn. Cheers Keith
Cheers KG!
Great video once again, love your enthusiasm
Thank you :)

Same here, early mornings really make it difficult.
Thanks Lisa :) It's worth trying for those early mornings every now and then though, birds are often more active and you get everywhere to yourself!
👍🏻 Exactly the way, I do! Great to see!
I love this video. I really enjoy this kind of birding. Thanks.
Thanks for the great tips Espen

Thank you Michael :)
That was such a nice forest. It looked like it was quite a steep slope. Some wonderful tips. Thank you Espen.
It's not that bad :) Thanks Pauline
Hi Espen, thank you very much for the advice and very nice photos you managed to take, congratulations. Great video. Cheers
Thank you!
Thanks for the tips Espen they will come in handy for me when I go out tomorrow.
Hope you got some good ones!

Thank you :) Yes, lucky to be on this side of Scotland, the west coast will be swarming with midgies soon! Best to cover up :)
great video
Thank you rudy nuyens!
Excellent video as always Espen
Particularly like the birds in flight shots
Thanks Colin 🙂
Something I've noticed. The parent birds I see are all haggared looking in this time :D Good on them.
Envious of your lightweight camera gear. Last year I climbed Cairngorm with my 400mm f/2.8
Damn!! You probably didn't regret it when you finally made it up though :)
Great advice, love dappled light Summer Solstice 20th of June. Just gone over to Summer mode Macro, light weight gear and sun hat. Amazing Pro capture flight shots just need a tad more light for lower ISO. Happy long days
yes, a bit more light would have been great!

Hi Espen what focus mode do you use for procap mode?
For pro capture high I can only use single AF.

Cool, I've been using DeNoise so far, very happy with that.
How did you meter this? Much shade and sun combined.
I've set up highlight and shadow alerts that I can see through the viewfinder when setting my exposure.
You look like Barney from how i met your mother series..🎉😀
manu I’ll take that 😅 Neil Patrick Harris is cool 👌

I like the idea of switching my accent to appeal to your ears 😅 I’m Norwegian
