That's all part of their long term strategy: keep the legend alive with the 5KX line and let the discontinued models sell out until it's time to release the upgrade.
I really like your video reviews. I’ll never face the choice of buying a Rolex Submariner. While I recognize and respect the iconic status, pedigree, timeless design and build quality, it’s just a price point I’ll never play in. I could never strap $8K onto my wrist and just go about my day without going nuts worrying about it. But I admire those who can. For me, it’s the SKX. All day. Every day. It’s the Jeep of watches. Rugged. Handsome. Timeless in its own way. And with tons of roguish charm. It’s still a mystery to me why Seiko killed it. But I have my theories. I’d be open to hearing yours. Again, nice video and thanks.
Thanks fro watching and for the feedback. And don't worry, the SKX is a great every day watch, you definitely don't need a Submariner to enjoy what's on your wrist.
Nice comment, I couldn‘t agree more. I actually could but I never will transform more than say roundabout €/$ 600.- into a wrist watch. Look nice and tell the time, the rest would be a psychological affair. If you fall in love with wrist watches (same with any other love affair) you will finally lose self control and self determination a n d tons of money for nothing more than the vague feeling of possession. The pure use value of watches isn‘t that big compared to houses, cars, bikes and what is more.
Hard to say, I think they try to lead people to higher price points for a „true“ diver watch, see Turtle, Mini Turtle, Sumo and others. And at the same time they try to capitalize peoples love for the skx dial with their new „fashion“ 5 or 5kx line up. I personally think they are wrong but the future will tell.
Guy, i gotta tell you: this is the best video you have ever made! Very informative an very nice shots of the watches! Thank you very much for your work! Many greets from Germany! Jochen
What do I think? Well I'll tell you this: I've owned the Turtle, Tuna, Sumo and Samurai, but they've all departed, and I've happily stuck with my first Seiko diver, the SKX on a rattly jubilee bracelet. As for the Submariner? Well, it's my horological goal, but in the form of the 14060M Two Liner. Great job, Guy.
Wonderful how you can evalute the virtues of both watches at polar opposites of price range. Very good, informative video about two of my favorite watches.
Great video my friend and a great history lesson included for both watches. Sound, video and information are top notch, awesome video. My thoughts? Both are classics and both are icons. I am a fan. That said: I owned 3 Subs, all are gone. The gmt though still is here. I did own two skx, the turtle is the watch which still is in my collection. I just felt drawn to the gmt and turtle more in terms of how they wear on my wrist. Seeing both again up close, well, They are icons because of a reason. Might get back again a Pepsi skx. The 3rd time than. Let’s see. Have a great weekend Bro, greetings from Germany 🙏🏻
Interessant. Both, Turtle and skx 007/009 are too big for me. I own and wear an upgraded skx 013. The Mini Turtle is nice too but I like the crown at the 4 o‘clock position and don‘t like cyclopse‘s.
So at first I thought to myself, "wow. He holds his hands super still, like a photo." But I thought it could not be a photo because the seconds hand is moving... or did you do some video magic?
Another great review - Your evaluation of these great divers is spot on. I own both the 114060 and the 14060M 2 liner. The 114060 is better engineered and the solid bracelet and glide-lock clasp are superb though I still tend to prefer the older case dimensions and design. My dream Submariner would have all the quality engineering of the new version but in the classic five digit case size, and NO DATE.
Funny, i bought the skx because of its Historical relevance and accolades. However, i rarely wear it n been thinking of selling it. My go-to seiko is the srp637.
Early in my collecting I decided I would want a Seiko diver in my collection but only wanted to have one. I decided the Sumo was for me as it was a nice balance in between their range. But I could never shake the desire for the SKX and especially that cheap jubilee bracelet that for some reason draws me in (like it is a modern and vintage watch at the same time). But now it is going up in price and I am not sure how much I would wear it. But it is a classic.
Great video. Outstanding narrative and beautiful camera work. Both watches are indeed icons, and this video is worthy of their timeless status. Thanks for sharing.
Just received my first Seiko, the SRP777, gotta say I'm impressed with the fit and feel, very comfortable on the rubber strap. I have two Submariners, the Seiko will get more wrist time given it didn't cost me an arm and a leg, it's more comfortable and probably won't hurt as bad when I ding it lol. The crown at 4 o'clock adds to the comfort, this should be more common. As far as time keeping accuracy with the Seiko, I'll let it slide given I paid $350 with shipping.
Great review both icon watches being a fellow collector i own the Skx 007 & 009 did own a 1970s Rolex submariner sold it wont buy another due to over price the watch commands unjustified in my view all the best from the UK.
Both are great watches and deserve a slot in most collections. Have owned and enjoyed the SKX009, but will probably never own a Submariner. The purchase price + subsequent maintenance costs are simply too high, and living in Paris, and usually traveling quite a bit, I am very aware of how much this watch makes you a target in many circumstances.
I am a sucker for dive watches, so i have the Seiko Skx009 and the Skx007 both. No Submariner though, i like the Seamaster models 2254.50 and 2531.80 a bit more so i chose those.
Another top review. As an SKX owner I'm really pining after one of the new Subs although I think I would go for the regular no date version. I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford it but it's a damn hard one to justify to myself never mind the Mrs! Keep up the stellar work.
I really enjoyed the History of the Submariner. Some of it I did not know. I think the real early ones were plastic for the crystal. I have had two skx watches, I sold one and kept the scratched up one that I paid around 100.00 a few years ago just to use for water sports as I know it can take the pressure of going off the diving board and not worry if I hit a wall with the watch in the pool. I was sad they discontinued it. I do not like the newer fashion Seikos that look like dive watches but no screw-in crown and only 100 meters water resistance. Not ISO certified. Most of the lower end of Seiko you will find flaws. Their mid-tier watches going from 500 to 800 is insane to me. I kind of lost interest in Seiko for value watches. I had an older submariner from the 1990s before the super case. I do not like it. Some love it.
Thanks for the comment Scott. I was also sad they discontinued the SKX and replaced it with those lower quality fashion watches. But I'm sure they will release a prospex SKX at some point, for a much higher price.
Love the video as always. Not a seiko fan. seiko never made subtle and incremental improvements over time like Rolex did with the Sub. Then seiko in their infinite lack of foresight summarily cancelled the skx and replaced it with the new seiko form over function 5 line.
I’m going wait for “another video” where you argue that a seiko skx is more iconic than a omega sea master.. That little quip still doesn’t make it an reasonable argument. But seriously, smooth video. Long in length but went quick. No fluff.
You have a very honest and real look at the things, you say things no other youtuber say, kudos, great video. I have a Citizen Promaster, good watch for the buck, in my opinion better than Skx
yes brother the promaster is beautiful I have a citizen ny0040 and promaster titanium blue dial I love both of them ❤ But going back to the SKX is ICONIC that alone puts the skx in a different league take care.
Well the watch is from 1996, so given the age, it was done right for the time. Given that longevity, enough of them had been produced to create a market around mods for that model.
If you have to compare one to the other seiko wins on its looks alone when they originally developed that style they tore up the rulebook On watch design.
I hope that seiko releases a GS skx with high accuracy quartz movement, sapphire crystal and a slimmer case. Dream watch right there. Whislt Orient offers better value, Seiko's designs are just way better.
I will never pay the price of a car for a watch (unless I win the Lotto). At their basic level, both tell time. Sure, the Rolex has superior technical build and quality, however, the price differential is way over the top. There are other dive watches that offer similar build quality that cost thousands less.
I agree, with that...just not a fan of jubilee Wish I could find that pepsi seiko in quartz, the 1 Schwartzcoft wore. N e way, thanks for the cool video
Had to send my son’s SKX to get fixed. Took months. It’s a cool watch but it let him down. I had to send a turtle in to be fixed. Fixing the turtle and SKX cost a fair amount and took months. My submariner was recalibrated under warranty by Rolex Canada in Toronto, took a week and was perfect. My Seiko marine master is fantastic, rock solid. You get what you pay for.
Rolex has had its day...hence the movrs to aquire Bucherer and cut down on ADs. I think they've been hurt by the grey marlet and flippers....and i guess that ADs have been doing the dirty to sell on to lnown traders at above RRP. The vast price difference between Rolex and comparable brands is ridiculous and has opened up a huge new market for competitors and new brands as people started looking elsewhere for quality and style.
This has to be one of my favorite videos you have made. I own a 114060 and a skx009 and love them both....that being said they will both remain in my collection. Man do I hope to win the rubber strap for my 114060 Guy keep up the great work THIS ONE WAS GOOD!
I enjoyed the side by side shots of these watches. I just bought an SKX007 on Ebay and am awaiting it. It is dated Sept 1996. I like the idea of having one of the very first pieces out of the factory. Lume on the hands and indicies are patina'd. Looking forward to seeing it in person.
While the SKX is not in the same league as the Submariner in terms of quality, most of the shortcomings can be resolved without much expense, A much better movement with hacking and handwinding, the NH35, can be had for about $35. A ceramic bezel insert and a domed sapphire crystal are in the same price range. Modifying the watch to accept these upgraded parts is a trivial exercise, resulting in a watch without the obvious shortcomings of the SKX, but retaining the character of the original watch. Bit unfair to compare the skx, a model from the 90's to a modern maxi case, ceramic, sapphire, submariner in my opinion. Ofcourse the modern Rolex Will win but lets compare the seiko to the 16610 sub, and the results would be much more interesting.

Funny my SKX009J was sitting on my desk while watching this video and I was like well... might as well slap it on the wrist while I'm at it. lol
It's a shame Seiko didn't upgrade the SKX with a newer movement and instead they released the inferior Seiko 5s
Yeah it really is a shame.
That's all part of their long term strategy: keep the legend alive with the 5KX line and let the discontinued models sell out until it's time to release the upgrade.
It is a shame but let's be honest, as the comment above says, you can almost guarantee there'll be an SKX re-release to great fanfare in a few years
Agreed
You're right nick as owner skx 009 i really hope seiko continue skx series
I really like your video reviews. I’ll never face the choice of buying a Rolex Submariner. I have a vintage skx just totally love the design screw all that mechanism crap skx all day long.
Iys the 4runner of watched jeeps break alot
Odd thing is when I first got my SKX it wasn't very accurate but got better over time like it went through a break in period.
That is interesting, I haven't had that experience with these movements, they usually just get worse and worse for me.
True for mine snk also, its (seems so at least) one of the more enjoyable characteristics of the 7S26.
same here lol
Guy,
i gotta tell you: this is the best video you have ever made! Very informative an very nice shots of the watches!
Thank you very much for your work!
Many greets from Germany!
Jochen
Thank you Jochen!
Stimmt, Jochen!
One of the amazing things about the SKX is it goes well with any strap or bracelet.
The SKX is the only Seiko diver I've hung on to as well. And I hope you get that 14060M soon my friend! Good luck.
Wonderful how you can evalute the virtues of both watches at polar opposites of price range. Very good, informative video about two of my favorite watches.
This was a great review of 2 true ICONS!
Great video my friend and a great history lesson included for both watches. Sound, video and information are top notch, awesome video.

Your Channel is One of the best ones!!!!!
Don’t own a Rolex but do have the skx009 and so glad I have this watch in my collection 👍🏻 . Definitely an iconic and legendary Seiko diver.
Skx very wow factory designs awesome design.
The quality of your videos has evolved in a good way. Nicely done Guy. 👍🏼
Much appreciated!
I love my Seiko SKX009J and it keeps better timing than my Rolex Sea Dweller 16600!! That’s a surprise to me!
So at first I thought to myself, "wow. He holds his hands super still, like a photo." But I thought it could not be a photo because the seconds hand is moving... or did you do some video magic?
No magic just a zen like state of stillness.
Another great review - Your evaluation of these great divers is spot on.

Don't sell it!
Whenever I see someone wearing a Rolex, I always wonder if its real.
nowadays even an skx!!!!
Had both, sold both! Much prefer the Turtle, Sarb and Sumo, made good profit with the Sub, saving now for the Royal Oak Offshore👍
Hope you get that Royal Oak soon!
How dare you, Anja!
Early in my collecting I decided I would want a Seiko diver in my collection but only wanted to have one. I decided the Sumo was for me as it was a nice balance in between their range. I was awaiting a "FINISH HIM!!" for the intro hahah
I have the 007 and 009 love them both
There both iconic I have both brand new never used.😊
just stopped the video to say this: wow !! excellent intro, mate !!
Thanks!
No one shows love for Orient, I love my Ray II and Kamasu
Orients will never become iconic but they are ( very) good watches.
I agree Tyson. I really rate my Kamasu. Great watch with decent specs . I’d take it over all the homage watches and even the SKX itself.
Because the Orient isn't an iconic watch and never will be
That's why
Nice video Guy. Both watches are indeed icons though IMHO the Omega Speedmaster Professional is the most iconic of all.
Great review both icon watches being a fellow collector i own the Skx 007 & 009 did own a 1970s Rolex submariner sold it wont buy another due to over price the watch commands unjustified in my view all the best from the UK.
Quite possibly the best Rolex Sub video...………...……...………......ever
Bold statement, but I’ll take it, thanks.
I own both, in fact i use them in rotation all the time 😊
Smart man!
I'm not a traveler so that's something I don't have to worry about, but I can understand the concern.
You shouldn't worry about that, people will almost always think it's fake, so you can safely wear it wherever you like.
Bloody good video mate...valid points!
Beautiful vid! Great quality
Thanks!
I am a sucker for dive watches, so i have the Seiko Skx009 and the Skx007 both. No Submariner though, i like the Seamaster models 2254.50 and 2531.80 a bit more so i chose those.

Great review of two iconic watches, nicely done...👏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it
I don't think I'll ever buy a watch that I'll wear more than my skx009 on a Jubilee bracelet.
I really enjoyed the History of the Submariner. Some of it I did not know. I think the real early ones were plastic for the crystal. BRAND NEW AND NIS GOING FOR A GRAND !!! WOW ICONIC
Just bought a NOS SKX 009J
Love the video as always. Not a seiko fan. seiko never made subtle and incremental improvements over time like Rolex did with the Sub. Then seiko in their infinite lack of foresight summarily cancelled the skx and replaced it with the new seiko form over function 5 line.
Thanks Derek!
Rolex submariner and Seiko SKX is home team and away team will be Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300 M and Citizen NY 0040.
That would be a cool video to do.
Loved the video & Love both watches.
Thanks brother!
I’m going wait for “another video” where you argue that a seiko skx is more iconic than a omega sea master.. That little quip still doesn’t make it an reasonable argument.

Great Bro! I love the review! Thanks a lot!
The reason the SKX is the most modded watch in the world is because Seiko didn’t do it right!!!
Underachieving Watch Collector how?
Thank you...Seiko's quality control has been nonexistent for years...
Well the watch is from 1996, so given the age, it was done right for the time. Given that longevity, enough of them had been produced to create a market around mods for that model.
And the Glock is probably the most modded pistol, it was pretty great from the start.
Wrong, they DID get it right, only idiot modders think otherwise
I've enjoyed the video. Good quality, informative and also short beard suits you better than long. Subscribed again.
Thanks for the sub! Glad you liked the video.
Nice, a head to head between a Sub and an SKX. I don’t think anyone has done it.
Thanks for watching man!
You should do more videos like this one =)
Great video. I really love how the skx stand proud next to that Rolex
Thanks for watching!
This video is giving me much Watchfinder & Co. vibes.
If you have to compare one to the other seiko wins on its looks alone when they originally developed that style they tore up the rulebook On watch design.
Thanks for watching!
Love this! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
I hope that seiko releases a GS skx with high accuracy quartz movement, sapphire crystal and a slimmer case. Dream watch right there.
Whislt Orient offers better value, Seiko's designs are just way better.
And will never ever be iconic...
Yes orient is objectively "better"...but it's a wannabe, and always will be
Very cool intro video!
Thanks!
Well done!
Thanks!
The skx009j dial and bezel are both derivative of Rolex
I will never pay the price of a car for a watch (unless I win the Lotto). At their basic level, both tell time. Sure, the Rolex has superior technical build and quality, however, the price differential is way over the top. There are other dive watches that offer similar build quality that cost thousands less.
I am a poor so I have a Squale 1545 and the STO turtle. But turtle is better value than the SKX.
The 1545 is nice, I reviewed on a while back and was impressed.
The skx is gonna be worth alot 1 day!!!!
Rolex much more Iconic than that jubilee band on Seiko
Probably true but I love them both.
I agree, with that...just not a fan of jubilee
Wish I could find that pepsi seiko in quartz, the 1 Schwartzcoft wore.
N e way, thanks for the cool video
great video!
The Rolex has a ceramic bezel. That's worth at least $7000. LoL
Got goosebumps
Seiko skx is no longer 2 hundred dollars.
OUTSTANDING video, guy. Love this style of video! Could I say it gives Watchfinder a run for its money...?
Wow high praise, thanks I appreciate that!
This has to be one of my favorite videos you have made. I own a 114060 and a skx009 and love them both....that being said they will both remain in my collection. Man do I hope to win the rubber strap for my 114060 Guy keep up the great work THIS ONE WAS GOOD!
Thanks Bobby glad you enjoyed it. Took a long time to make, but I think it was worth it.
Brand new 1997 seiko skx007 never worn.
How much you spent on your 96? Thank you 😊
While the SKX is not in the same league as the Submariner in terms of quality, most of the shortcomings can be resolved without much expense, A much better movement with hacking and handwinding, the NH35, can be had for about $35. A ceramic bezel insert and a domed sapphire crystal are in the same price range. Modifying the watch to accept these upgraded parts is a trivial exercise, resulting in a watch without the obvious shortcomings of the SKX, but retaining the character of the original watch. And still with an investment about 1/30th of what it realistically costs to buy a Submariner.
And if you do those things you've made it worthless and taken away it's ISO rating.
Sorry but I'll never ever mod mine
terrible you be making your wallet have a heart attack 😂
Sold my SKX about two months ago. Biggest piece of junk I owned. All hype no bite. Almost felt bad taking that guys money.
Eric Pignatore why do all the watch gurus drool 🤤 over the SKX 💩???
I don't know if I'd go so far as to say they're junk, but it's really not about the watches quality as to why it's appealing, it's the watches design and character that people like.
skx is better
In some ways perhaps.
The Rolex Sub is the most copy watch in the world no true for the Seiko. This sounds like japanese propaganda.
First! 🤣
Winning!
DAMM! Oh well, some day.
Bit unfair to compare the skx, a model from the 90's to a modern maxi case, ceramic, sapphire, submariner in my opinion. Ofcourse the modern Rolex Will win but lets compare the seiko to the 16610 sub, and the results would be much more interesting.
