I applaud you for the narrow gauge tunnel portals out of air dry clay, hand painting the rails to make then look worn out, and the work you've done on the harbour. Your puppy Moseby is adorable.

The reason the clay cracked is because you didn't add expansion joints. You can tell because the clay cracked in squares. As the clay dries the temperature changes and the clay expands. If you cut squares into it it will help prevent it from cracking. This is done with sidewalks and that is what those lines are for.
I would say the crack in the portal makes it even more realistic. Old tunnels tend to get non-detrimental cracks in them. You could even run a little scenario where the tunnel needs to be repaired and deliver everything needed
@@segymun1720 "There is nothing wrong with that tunnel. You got stuck in it because you tried to do rock and roll! Tunnels are tunnels and you are not a pop star!" I think the [not cracked] tunnel adds character. Maybe the NG route was originally built as a road centries before the railway was build on top of it and is starting to show its age.
I think this was the Layout video where I learned the most about new methods on building and detailing a model railway. Painting the rails being the main thing because I feel that would have been something stupid I would do in my youth, thinking it was a good idea, only to ruin what I have after I went through with it. And being a bit biased, I love how you gave your Great Northern Alco RS-2 some run time being a Great Northern collector myself. And have fun with your new puppy!
Honestly I think having painted the rails with a brush was a blessing in disguise. It gives it a more authentic grimy imperfect feel. I have a feeling spray paint would have made it a bit to clean looking. Keep up the good work!
The layout looks so good so far I love the narrow gauge part, and everything is looking great and vibrant with the backdrop. But I especially love the way the harbor the most. Can't wait to see more videos Tug keep up the good work. Also such a cute puppy!

About the narrow gauge loop, it was a good idea! im actually very interest about your sculpt tunnel portols seens i didnt actually think about that! putting the chicken wire will really help for alot to make a hill.

I literally made a video about my Ffarquhar Quarry layout, and this drops. What a happy coincidence! Edit: I terms of making water, I once saw this video by a user called 'marklinofsweden', who uses dampened toilet paper (weird as it sounds). The cool part about this technique is that you can shape little waves in the paper with a paintbrush, and it looks very convincing when the process is finished!
Just a thing to say about the harbor you should paint it with a dark blue then maybe put like a small thin layer of clear epoxy over it which will give a deep water feel I don't exactly know if it'll work but it's worth a shot because then the boats that need to sit high up that don't look good or wouldn't look good if the water was very close to the height of the key then small boats like 10 cents the Takara tensions in the video would be able to work with the track
I have an idea. You should try and find a d51 locomotive and paint it to look like hiro. Afterall, you did say hiro was one of your favorite characters so having hiro on your model railway seems logical
Your layout videos are by far my favorite vids from you, I learn quite a bit from them, I’m cleaning out my basement with my dad so that I can build my own layout and yours is such a big inspiration for it, thanks Tug.
Quick note on the tunnel portals, for the effect you were going for, you might want to try dry brushing. It's similar technique, but instead of wiping the paint off after you've applied it to the model you wipe most the paint off your brush on a paper towel or bit of cardboard before doing so. Still leave stuff in the recesses and gives it a very different, worn look.
What a cute lil puppy, i also got a new dog recently her name is lisa, she does bite but playfully although recently she started biting harder soo we also have to train her also finaly i see someone appreciate inbedded rails like me, they are just soo satisfiyng too see
Wow this set is huge and so great, I've never seen something like this until I saw you making a layout and saying that there are a bunch of people out there who do the same, which really inspired me to make one in the future. I could also suggest some additions to this that would be really cool. You could do a little expansion in the spot where the narrow gauge circle is, make a whole plateau or mountain range there with the reversing circle could be entirely inside of it and also have a point that will lead to the other side of the mountain where there would be a 2nd mountain and the rails would just go around the 2nd mountain leading an engine up the mountain to then meet at the top with and expanded narrow gauge line. You can also make tye mountain connected to the middle so the circling line could go through a number of tunnels before reaching the "split" of them where the mountain that you already have in your set would just go up and have a peak, having a castle on the mainland side and something like a mine or just nothing on the other side, the 2nd could just go hilly and have a town up there, where tge narrow gauge railway would go around and the circling up going railway would loop around the hill town to then either simply having a turntable or a sort of "slide" through the 1st mountain and back to the mainland railway. Also you could make some engines made specifically on this "circling" railway to transport goods from there to harbour and back, like narrow gauge ones but bigger. Like Lady, for example. I might have gotten a little carried away with my imagination but still, would be a great addition to the railway, if you ever think of an expansion of some sort, you can consider stuff from this idea. I would love to see the railway stories you talked about, because this whole set is just amazing, as well as the trains. Good luck with it.
Hey Tug, I had an idea for the layout. Maybe you could build the narrow gauge railway toward the left side of the layout. You could do a turn-around on top of the tunnel in the left corner. I thought it would be cool, or maybe it’s just overdoing it

I don’t know what you plan on using for grass and stuff but I’ve found that Army Painter has some pretty cool grass and terrain stuff
Broke the tunnel - no Added more detail - yes I love how accidents can lead to something looking that much better. The snap point of the tunnel gives it that " it's new but not new enough not to have some damage " kinda look. Kinda how the dock looked aged with the cracks in it cus it's by the ocean ( or river) so Damage is inevitable. Love what your doing, hope you get more room in that garage.
Scalescenes has some highly detailed OO scale boat models that would be perfect for your harbor for a very reasonable price, including a barge, a small coastal freighter, and a Clyde Puffer; basically the Scottish boat equivalent of a pickup truck. And the reason they're so cheap: They're papercraft models! You can print them out at home; the instructions are excellent for saying what thickness of paper each part needs, and then fold and glue them together. Best of all: Since you're buying a PDF, you can print out and make as many models as you want.
Really starting to look like something! I never did much scenery back when I was attempting to build a model railroad, but here’s one thing I did that I quite liked. Maybe you can find a use for it somewhere on your layout: I built tunnel portals for my layout out of wood, but I wanted them to look like concrete, and just painting them gray was too boring. So I sprayed them with spray paint, and then while the paint was still wet, covered them with play sand. Like, dump that sand on with reckless abandon. I waited for the paint to dry so the sand would stick, banged them against the bench to knock off the excess, and then sprayed them with paint again. Gave them some great visible texture. Maybe you can find a use for that somewhere.

Maybe you can find a use for it somewhere on your layout:
I built tunnel portals for my layout out of wood, but I wanted them to look like concrete, and just painting them gray was too boring.
Your model layout videos convinced me recently to get into model railroading! It's so inspiring watching your journey
