The lesson to be learned is never underestimate your opponent. Just because you are bigger and possibly stronger doesn't guarantee you will win the fight. A smaller and/or older man who is skilled in the art of war can defeat a larger, younger man who is too confident and proud. This man was toying with the younger man. He could have killed him within the first few seconds.
"You notice he is bigger than you? and younger" "Yes ,bet on him if you like." "Luck" "He is going to get killed" "That is possible" "See to your friend ,he was a brave man" and the clip was not long enough ,we missed. "Deception was the point ,any fool can calculate what they can see" "We will miss his sword" It was a long time ago so I hope the last quotes were at least close. So many great lines in this movie. Most underrated movie of all time. Up there with Galaxy Quest and 5th Element.
yeah, the more I look at it, the more I cannot understand why it's rated so low on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Great score, great action and suspense, great story... was it action heavy? sure, was it great sword n sorcery type film but made more realistic for a modern audience? yes. This film is just criminally underrated it's frustrating. I wonder why the director isn't making any more movies after making so many classics.
pjzdreamz -Agreed. Part of the subsequent conversation was something like "Any fool (meaning the prince) can measure strength he can see; now he has to consider strength he CAN'T see."
pjzdreamz Why the Deception??? Deception is the point! Any fool can calculate strength. That one has been doing it since we arrived. Now he has to calculate what he can't see.
guitardaddy6 Yeah, but it's Hollywood. When have they ever been historically accurate? This entire film is pretty much historically inaccurate but it's still a cool movie in my opinion.
guitardaddy6 So what did they use holding their shields, just out of curiosity? Also that was the least of the silly things in this movie. 10th century norse in full plate, Roman gladiator and Spanish conquistador armor.

Michael Viking shields only had a handle in the middle of the shield that doubled as a support beam for the planks that made up the shield. If you've ever played skyrim it's pretty much the same idea. 2.bp.blogspot.com/-V-PJy-ul9Xw/U9lFnoBXrRI/AAAAAAAAB0I/zZhYS8aJCUI/s1600/2shieldback.jpg

I love the sound of the sword against the shield. "Ting ting" the Norse version of "come at me bro".
Glad I wasn't the only one! Every swing felt like it had a huge impact. Great sound design!
I can watch this film again and again. Brilliant.
Casually walks off like just another day in the park. What a badass.
I love the sorrow you hear in his voice at the end.
Dude got played. Older Viking knew what he was doing the whole time.
older, smaller, weaker viking
...who was still alive at the end of the movie.

Indeed he could.
Some way to show off +nods in agreement+
Hard not to respect him after that display of skill.

@@KvltKommando because he went to prison for fraud against a Hollywood producer and is now hated in the industry.
Why didn't you post the next 40 seconds ? It explained a previous conversation about power and politics, which was what this exersice was all about !

To bad he had to kill him.
He got lucky lol
That's dumb, big guy could've killed him a few times, but then short guy kills him first chance he gets.
This scene always bothered me as a kid. What was the purpose in killing him?? Such a dick move.
