I think it’s the stark difference between who you may see in a class, people devoting time and hard earned money to developing themselves, vs who you see at any given public range or worse, those who don’t even go to the range. I think it’s why it’s crucial for those of us that hold a higher standard for ourselves, to bring those around us up. There is too much enablement, empowerment, instillation of hope and aspiration, and credulity. And not enough teaching of the dangers, the down sides, and the very real limits that exist. People are being taught they can do anything they decide to, while the negatives are treated like mere theory or abstraction. Those of us who DO believe in the dangers are called paranoid. When tragedy strikes the Polyannas, they never thought it could happen to them.
I grew up on a farm and Dad taught me how to shoot a gun, but never really taught me gun safety. He'd just grown up with guns in the house never thinking about it. I bought him a new scope for his birthday a couple years ago(71 yrs old now) I went to set up a target down range and I started walking back and he was pointing the rifle straight at me looking down the scope. It was unloaded, but I wasn't happy with him for that. Looking back at the times I shot with my friends as a teenager and early 20's, I cringe and wonder how someone didn't get shot, they were not taught either. I'm teaching my daughter different.
Truly a heart breaking story. I would like to see firearms safety courses taught in schools,the NRA has a great course for kids. Some parents and grandparents don’t own or have anything to do with firearms but their kids or grandchildren may come across one,the kids and young adults need to know what to do if or when that happens. Just left a outdoor unsupervised range never to go back because of dangerous people not just one visit but one to many. Will not return. Yes lots of people do not deserve to own or even touch firearms.
My Cousin Danny was shot in the neck by a police officer’s son- he died from his injury. They weren’t young kids- he was college age when it happened, going to Embry Ridel in FLA, but home for break in Brockton Ma. This friend of his “Joe” pointed his father’s revolver at him and shot him through the neck, think it was funny as he clicked through the empty cylinder, until he got to the chamber that wasn’t empty. Apparently, he went to the box in the closet where he knew his dad kept his gun, tilted out the cylinder and emptied the shells, one shell didn’t drop free though, he didn’t look and didn’t count the rounds- just flipped the cylinder back in, thinking it was going to be funny to scare him with it. That kid only got community service as a punishment too because of his dad’s cop connections… This is such a tragedy for that girls family.

Never ever outgrow the 4 Basic Fundamentals of Firearm safety! 1) Always ASSUME a firearm is loaded. 2) Never point your firearm at anything you DO NOT wish to destroy. 3) Never put your finger on the trigger, until you have acquired the target and made the decision to shoot. (Keep your finger on the frame of the firearm! Not the trigger guard!) 4) Know your target, what's behind your target, by the side of the target, and what could get in front of your target (Defensive Firearm Training is for a 360 deg real world!)

I also was shot in the face with a pellet gun from a few feet away when I was a kid (unintentionally). I also had a friend shot feet from me 6 times with a 22 and he died (intentionally). Firearms are a Right but it comes with personal responsibility.
People would be shocked by the behavior of people that they know and ordinarily trust. Many years ago while at work, I was sharing my Combat Commander with a coworker, someone I trusted. While admiring the piece, he swung it about and pointed it at another coworker. I was horrified! If something had happened, I would have held a great deal of responsibility. I learned a serious lesson that day.
I bought an 870 Remington pump shotgun when my mother had to sign because I was one year under age! 102$ is what it cost brand new! I still have it today. It was 1971.
Mick before this one year for Christmas I received a single shot 20 gauge. My Dad bought two guns one for me and one for my brother. He paid 26$ plus tax they were H&R shotguns still have mine. Maybe I gave it to my son. What made think of this was you shooting the concrete block. One day behind my grandfather’s house I had that 20 gauge I was in the woods by myself! It was loaded with #3 buckshot so I decided to conduct a test. As kids do I back up a few feet from a 6 inch thick are so pine sapling and shot it it made a whole just a little one side about 3 inches across completely through the tree and it fell over! That from then on has been stuck in my mind! Of the destructive power of a gun! Of course since I have harvested many wild game and have seen more evidence the power of different firearms! But never forgot that pine tree falling over!
So sad, when i was 14 i went hunting with my dad. I shot a buck about 100yds with a mossberg 500. In my excitment quickly walking up to it, i slipt and fell in the mud. When i got up to the deer i had to finish it off. I stood 5 ft away and aimed down, boom...PAIN in my foot...deer dead...i thought i shot my foot off, but it was still there. When i got back to the cabin i noticed the end of the barrel was gonenit got mud in it and blew up.
My kids got into shooting because I hunt. Eventually, they got involved in high school trap shooting. I made sure to get involved and assistant coach. This means that all my kids have gone through a gun safety class and been exposed to guns their whole life. Before my time, those classes were taught IN the school system. In my day, we took gun safety outside of school but many people had a rack in their car and had a rifle or shotgun in that car. It seems, as we have removed the training from schools and continued to demonize/fear monger guns the instances of gun violence/accidents, especially in schools, has been on an exponential rise. It is my opinion that we need to bring gun safety back into the schools. Even if you, as a parent, abhor guns, your children, no matter how much you try to coddle them, will come into contact with a gun if they live in America. Understanding the power of the gun and the basics with how to operate them, will go so much further towards safety than trying to "ban" or "limit" the guns. It's also my opinion that we layer on safety measures so that when taken all together almost guarantee total safety. Remove one layer and the safety drops but does not diminish. So, if you practice all the safety measures, you are 99% safe. The idea of the layering is that, as a gun user, the likelihood you might get complacent or mess up at some point is, statistically, high and as long as you practice all the layers, even if you miss one or half-ass one, you will still be 95% safe. Continue practicing safety so that, should an accident happen, you will only be down on layer BUT continue to try for perfection. My saying is, I practice gun safety so that the accident I WILL have will not be catastrophic.
You have the right to drive a car and we all think it is a good idea everybody has to take driving lessons and pass a test before being allowed on the road...

Perhaps you should let them know they know nothing about the Constitution, the law or history,...and that they should have used the phrase "free and republican society." I support the 2A, but I also believe that we need commonsense gun laws. I'm not talking about restrictions on magazine capacity or banning semi-auto rifles derived from military assault rifles (those are based on ignorance rather than commonsense, in my opinion). I'm talking about making a law that says you need to take and pass firearm safety and lawful usage classes before you can own or even use a gun. They should be mandatory, just like passing a driver's test to get a driver's license is mandatory.

Mandatory gun training in our schools would instill safety and awareness. Kinda like typing class or driver's ed.

@@Philmoscowitzcriminals don’t follow gun laws nor do they take training classes and therefore I as an American should not be forced to do so to legally bare arms.
I support the 2A, but I also believe that we need commonsense gun laws. I'm not talking about restrictions on magazine capacity or banning semi-auto rifles derived from military assault rifles (those are based on ignorance rather than commonsense, in my opinion). I'm talking about making a law that says you need to take and pass firearm safety and lawful usage classes before you can own or even use a gun. They should be mandatory, just like passing a driver's test to get a driver's license is mandatory.
I'm skeptical, but what you are saying makes a lot more sense than the current bs laws politicians have passed here in California. Handgun roster, featureless rifles, etc only punish law abiding citizens and arguably make firearms less safe.
Yes! Exactly! It is mind boggling that there are so many people screaming, "It's my God given right!" Hello?? If you can't pass a gun safety class, you have no business owning a firearm. RESPONSIBLE gun owners want responsible, common sense gun laws, not a free for all. And if it's a "God given right", then should felons be allowed to own them? Should babies be allowed to have and play with them?? I honestly can see our corrupt politicians legislating for it. Maybe not the felons, but children, sure. I'm so tired of children losing their lives because of these money hungry politicians, who DGAF about the people they're supposed to be serving. We couldn't even bring bags in to my brother's graduation. Drinks had to be sealed as well. And WTF would anyone ever point a gun at someone, for fun. I feel like it is common sense to not point unless you plan to shoot. Always treat every gun as if it were loaded. Idk. I grew up with guns locked up and bullets stored up and separately. Guns were not toys, even fake ones. We weren't allowed to play with them. We took gun safety as children. I guarantee that over half of these people basically insinuating that their guns are more important than children, don't even know the most basic gun safety.
