SURGEON GENERAL WARNING: SOCIAL MEDIA

  • U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy called Monday for placing tobacco-style warning labels on social media to alert users that the platforms can harm children’s mental health, escalating his warnings about the effects of online services such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
    Writing in a New York Times opinion essay, Murthy urged Congress to enact legislation requiring that social media platforms include a surgeon general’s warning to “regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe.”
    He cited evidence that adolescents who spend significant time on social media are at greater risk of experiencing anxiety and depression and that many young people say the platforms have worsened their body image. Murthy said warning labels, like those on tobacco and alcohol products, have been shown to change people’s behaviors.
    The surgeon general’s call to action comes as regulators and legislators increasingly scrutinize links between social media use and children’s mental health, ushering in a wave of proposals to expand protections for children on the internet. Lawmakers have likened tech’s impact on youths to that of Big Tobacco and urged swift action to counteract what they call a driving force in the youth mental health crisis.
    Yet despite the bipartisan outcry, there is still significant debate within the scientific community about the extent to which social media use may be causing mental health issues among children and teens. Researchers and public officials have pushed to increase federal funding to study the topic, and they have criticized tech companies for not making more internal data on the matter available to the public.

      Its actually the opposite, the health minister for South Africa banned the position in 2018 due to “major cause of cancer and stroke” and he actually said its okay to do it occasionally like on Valentines Day or Christmas Day. His reasoning is doggy causes fatigue for men and fatigue causes cancer and strokes which rates have gone up in his country.

      if they wanna pass laws to help people, especially youth, get outside and interact more. Then they need to do things that gives benefits to community events, adjust how laws like loitering are handled like you said, maybe even budget infrastructure more for walkable cities (instead of it always going into roads) and community spaces.
      but they'd rather wage culture wars instead because it gets them votes and money.

    Honestly the ending really hits at the heart of the issue. Parents have not been doing a great job limiting their children’s intake of the internet. All things in moderation and I say that as an adult that spends way too much time online myself. I think we need to take a look in the mirror as a society and come to terms with the fact that we don’t need to be online as much as we do and we should really put down the devises more often because this is how our kids pick up their habits by watching us. But we can’t put down the phone or get off the computer to set a good example so we are going to ask the government to do it for us.

    Psychology is my field. I'll say that the APA always lags behind the research and that like many things social media isn't inherently negative, but the manner and frequency it is used can lead to negative consequences in cogitation and behavior. Also, for those that aren't in the sciences when an institution or paper says we need more research that isn't surprising because they nearly all say that. Which is true, we need more research, so we better understand it.

    I do also think it’s worth mentioning the diagnosis rates for kids with social media versus without, you have a higher chance of being able to see symptoms in yourself and ask to get tested leading to higher diagnosis rates, my parents who were supposed to know me better than anyone else and were supposed to be the people i trust the most couldn’t even consider the idea that i had depression, anxiety and adhd before i was diagnosed, the only way i ever even got tested was a mix of information from the internet and a very helpful guidance counselor in my senior year of highschool

    • @ivan_d_feets4495
      @ivan_d_feets4495 2 месяца назад +24

      Not exactly refuting your statement here but its worth thinking about the fact that if you have a whole family for example that uses social media, or even really just children. Then parents can not really be expected to know us better than anyone else. As someone in their early 20s that has spent a bunch of time on the internet even when i wasnt “allowed to”….i feel like ive lived multiple lives on the internet that my family could never even begin to understand… the things ive done… the people ive met… they have all affected me in ways that no one other than me can even know. And this effect can lead to parents not knowing their children, children not knowing their siblings…etc until we all feel misunderstood in some way due to a system that was supposed to bring us all closer together.

    • @Elunvira
      @Elunvira 2 месяца назад

      @@ivan_d_feets4495 there is also the fact that most parents work to much to pay enough attention on their kids as they mostly come home to make dinner and sleep.
      This leads to not seeing ADHD as internet covers for that
      Depression is also something hard as people grow up they'll tend to gravitate towards friends/games thus interact with their parents less and less. Unless you get suicidal it's almost impossible to tell as it could just be seen as your "character."
      Anxiety would be the hardest as unless you have a panic attack it's just similar symptoms of by shy towards new things.
      Social Media is both good/bad as more and more reports of constant negative feeds, and the over abundance of information about world events and things like that, the more we are getting to understand how impactful social media is.
      Pretty sure there was a recent report that got people to reduce or remove social media out of their lives for a period of time that resulted in reductions in anxiety levels. Don't remember if it talked about depression and other things, but that alone seems beneficial.

These symptoms are especially worse when minors are given access to these websites and devices.
      Finally, 99% of clinical depression cases are because of outside factors. Do you exercise regularly? Do you eat healthy? Do you get enough sleep? Do you socialize at all? Do you have a goal you are working towards? Again, 99% of times if someone who is depressed does these things they will recover. Screw warning labels. They need to make it so parents can really lock them out! My daughter is 10 and special needs. She is able to bypass all any parental locks and get into TikTok and facebook no matter what we use. The ads in games allow her to bypass all parental locks. It's a nightmare. Don't even get me started on the chat features in education video games that can be by passed by a 2 year old.

    As an avid user of social media, I really tend towards this to be true tbh. Depression has skyrocketed since the smartphone became commonly used, and let's face it, we didn't spend that much time on social media as we did 15 years ago when I was a teen. Ofc 24 hour news is most likely a factor as well, and more, but social media is most definitely the biggest factor.

  • @noobynoob138
    @noobynoob138 2 месяца назад +1

    I think it's plausible that the relation between social media usage and mental health problems is correlational instead of causational. It's quite common to hear that social media causes anxiety and depression, but maybe it's that being outcast from real-life social groups causes anxiety and depression, while also causing social media usage as social outcasts seek social contact online.
    Similarly, being in a car causes sitting and is the main cause of car accidents, but it's ridiculous to claim that excessive sitting is the main cause of car accidents.

    Depends. What social media. Why are you on it. Do you have supervision. How much time do you spend. Does it affect your life in a negative or positive way outside of social media. Bunch of very complicated questions, but overall, yes, something does seem to be corrilated with social media and anxiety. Not necessarily caused but correlated.
