      Yep. There's really no point to social media for maintaining local friendships. It works best for expats like me with lots of international friends they met offline first. Otherwise nobody needs to share a constant thought stream with friends or work colleagues they see regularly anyway. You're supposed to have some time apart from friends and loved ones so that you miss and appreciate each other.

      Lol, I thought I deleted my Facebook-account some years ago - came across this video and went there to check: and lo, I was still a member... I clicked on the grey x, that allegedly clears one's profile, but I doubt, that really cleared everything from every server... Most likely I still have a twitter-account, too, but unluckily I forgot my twitter-name, my password and since then changed my computer, my provider and my e-mail, too - I fear, under this circumstances it is undeletable, and I'm bound to be a digital corpse...

      Conversely, you can just turn-off notifications, in which case, your _mind_ would control if and when you are reminded of a particular site. Your actual friends ought to have your email address, ffs. I wonder why no one ever thinks of this. Seriously, once you've become aware of a site's toxicity, why would you even choose to go there?
      Or, how about this? If you've something to get off your chest, go, post, and, without regard for consequence, leave. Give it a go. The catharsis is real, and the targeted strike allows you to immediately get on with your life.

      I wholeheartedly agree and beg people who are unhappy with their lives to at least try it. I went the extra mile and only have a smartphone for calls/emergencies and I recently let go of Amazon, my credit cards, and debting in general. Being conditioned to interact via smartphone with these unseen entities was figuratively killing me. There a few things I won't be able to do, I guess, but I have literally never been more calm or happy. SO worth it.

      @Building Alaska
      Yes, I've been offended people being offended by someone's appearance to the point of not taking their points seriously. Congratulations, you got me. I hope that doesn't offend you.
      But like can you imagine someone who is so easily triggered that it doesn't even come down to ethics or something important, it's ultimately just like, "Oh God my eyes, it's a fat person". Like, I love a good troll just as much as the next guy, but like, if you're gonna poke fun at how people need to calm down, I feel like you're missing out on the quality trolling material by wasting your time on me.

    • @KnThSelf2ThSelfBTrue
      @KnThSelf2ThSelfBTrue 6 лет назад +18

      @J Clark, I appreciate your honesty and straightforwardness, so allow me to reciprocate. I frankly find that viewpoint disgusting. I don't trust the judgement of someone who makes no actual comment on an individual's argument, and feels as comfortable as seem to be dismissing said person based entirely on their appearance. The fact of the matter is that you don't actually have any real insight on this speaker's character from knowing this person in any way, you just think all obese people are out-of-control food addicts.
      Even if that were 100% true for this individual, I'm still shocked that you think that this in any way disqualifies him from having a well-evidenced argument for the function of social media as a form of behavior modification. You wouldn't feel the same way about someone making a lecture with a large coffee cup, would you? Do you feel the same way about strung-out ex-heroine junkies with track-marks if they happen to claim to have an interesting and thorough analysis of the effect of heroine addiction as a form of behavior modification, or any other discussion of socially orchestrated addiction, would you? I certainly hope not.

    • @jclark1693
      @jclark1693 6 лет назад

      Isaac Lee you’re making arguments against things I never said, I don’t see the point in that. You’re mostly responding to your assumption of an opinion rather than trying to understand it.

    I deleted my Facebook profile when the Cambridge Analityca thing came out, and I've never used Twitter. The only social media I use is RUclips, because of the videos about my various interests. I've switched off notifications, so I'm not addicted to people liking or disliking anything I say. Deleted my social network accounts half a year ago, and it really improved my day to day mood. I've lost acquaintances and people I thought were my friends because of it, and it is harder to meet people when they cant just look you up, so it has objectively made me lonelier, but I do feel as if a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. That negative feedback loop is gone, I no longer have to deal with a bombardment of outraged viewpoints from people trying to get me just as outraged about something they're passionate about. That weird competitive nature that social media not so subtly shovels onto you isnt stressing me out anymore. I also feel more secure knowing that my identity isnt just floating out there in the ether for anyone to peer at when they choose. It was a tough decision, and there are downsides, but in the end, I encourage it.

At the time I noticed the quality of the interaction and how it was all superficial emotional fluff and meaningless expressions of empathy/encouragement without any depth - in other words, the electronic incarnation of the "self-esteem movement" complete with virtual trophies just for being alive. I never touched Facebook but I did develop a small Twitter habit the last couple of years, thinking that the online discourse badly needed people with functioning brains to talk sense.
    A few months ago I s###canned Twitter and the improvement to my mental health was immediate. I'd never look back. I'm sad to say that I've given up on fixing the world, but at least now I'm approaching the lightness and focus I need to address my own life.

    He said that go 6 month without social media than you'll know the difference, I'm on my way I don't have a particular number but what I have observed all content is intended to make us passive and generally that kind of content has the most views whereas real content which is good for the humanity ,which help us think critically ,get us inspired is pushed away in the dark. This is the downfall of social media that it decide for us what content to watch , taking control in their hand rather than letting us decide..

    I would love to see a complete list of what is considered social media, beyond all the obvious ones. Of course Facebook and Instagram are there, but what about amazon? And other shopping websites? What about news websites, blogs etc, what about Netflix? Of course we don’t post anything on Netflix, we get suggestions based on what we have watched. What about youtube? What about job search websites, if you look for one job type, before you know it you are getting similar suggestions without even asking. I really wanted to email Jaron Lanier to ask this question, but I can’t find an email for him. If anyone knows, it sure would be helpful. Somehow I think the entire device - the phone or iPad, is addictive. I don’t think it’s enough to only get rid of the obvious social media sites.

      This is where we exercise discernment and strengthen discipline.
      The keyword is "distraction."
      Since I have been gardening, it takes up a lot of my time - My idle hands simply do not feel around for electronics unless it is the corded weedwhacker.
      You're defining "social media" by interchanging the word "apps."
      Social media is anywhere online that you interact with others for entertainment or information. RUclips IS social media in the bottom half of the screen. but There is no social interaction in simply observing the videos.
      It does not mean the upper-half of youtube is benevolent because the manipulation is in all content we could access. This is where discernment comes into play - we must learn what is detrimental and what is ultimately helpful to our every day lives.
      Like, news is not social media - just media. but It is wide open to all toxicity due to it being rife with propaganda. It's the same propaganda machine that helped create social media, even working alongside in tandem.
      also: engaging in blogs is definitely a social medium >>> Anywhere you can swap info/opinions with multiple people. "An electronic gathering and sharing."
      Amazon is not: unless you frequent the reviews.
      I realize now that you asked this 4 years ago. oops.

    Oddly, my decision to leave Facebook earlier this month is what likely resulted in the offering here. While my parking ticket has been stamped nicely as result of this offering and I love the musical offerings, the contrasting realities at present with respect to the free market and the inherent ‘premise staples’ from which seem very relevant at the time - perhaps the point he raised about the combinations of socialism and capitalism being the worst of both worlds at that time, I have to presume he hadn’t considered the new feudalism that seems rather likely to be further along than mere abstraction.

    been (intuitively) on this very thread for about 20 years, un-coincidentally only as long as i've been using the internet (but for the most part, avoiding social media). am not involved with silicon valley, so naturally i can't articulate the specifics with the inside perspective and obvious genius which jaron has magnanimously bequeathed his audience here, and in his book ...... one thing is very clear however, no matter how you receive (digest) this information, jaron is a digital visionary/ renaissance man...with the ability to peer into and navigate the hectic labyrinthine inner-machinations/anatomy, of this preposterously behemoth experiment in social behavorism. and some of it is, as he says, very positive in terms of connectivity, but along with that comes the nefarious skinner- box /dopamine -excitation manipulation, with attendant dark algorithmic wizardry, the shadow or dystopian aspect. the question remains as to whether the benevolent virtues outweigh the faustian compact, which is unfolding each and every time you (we) sign into one or more of these platforms, including yt.......the segment regarding cyber-pioneer norbert weiner is sufficiently terrifying so as to grab our attention, it is the epitome of prophetic (from the 1940's...) de-construction of the pestilence of cell-phone addiction, which we are experiencing as a societal malignancy, both literally and metaphorically. jaron hits the nail on our heads, pretty consistently...thank you sir, rock on!!

    There are some apps that are hard not to use because they are included in the business. In Dubai, you must have WhatsApp to communicate. In China, you must use WeChat. In Taiwan, you must use Facebook. Social media can even help you find a job. The problem is vanity. We all want to be famous from social media. The likes and the followers and the views. The illusion is the social media companies can quickly make you famous or it can shadowban you.
