Why J. Cole Became Overhated

- Shoutout RDC... can't wait to go back to school tbh... things get boring at home.... anyways in terms of videos this week I'm going back to back soon... cole fans might hate this one but maybe they love it.
Jcoles feature run in 2022 was immensely insane. And we cant forget he went platinum with no features... three times
I forgot to put up the screenshot where J Cole says he hates that joke
@@KingBenny ik he does but its so fun to use it when talking about him🤣
Can someone explain the joke I’m out the loop
@@BEDillon I think it just references Cole's album getting platinum with no features which before him, hadn't happened in like a decade
@@BEDillon Could be wrong though
I was really falling off with J Cole until The Off-Season, but I gotta be honest Johnny P’s Caddy is what reinvented my love for his craft. His verse is just transcendent.
one of the best verses of the years, yes.
his verse was soooooooo cold
Cole leveled up approaching Off Season and So on. He realized he needed to stop tryna Play it safe and flexing sometimes is coo. His rhyme and flow approach changed, I believe he got a lil advice from some in his camp (JID).
Something about Cole’s music just captures fans in a way other artists can’t. You either gravitate towards it or you don’t, but you can’t deny the passion he has for the game. Best part about it all is his run isn’t over…
It’s A Boy January 28 🙏
I wouldn't count on it... someone like cole would be teasing it more heavily i feel like
@@KingBenny hes been teasing it

i think 4 your eyez only is definitely an important, unique piece of hip-hop.
it's for the better that he's switchin things up, but u can't deny how impressive it is that cole can make an album that mainly focuses in lyrically, and still go platinum and be critically acclaimed by many. it's personally one of my fav albums of all time and i'm glad it exists the way it does.
I mean sure... I don't really care ab platinums and such... but aye I do think the album is impressive tho
Couldn’t have said it any better
Same
I think the coldest Cole ever went off was on that A LOT verse. I remember hearing that for the first time and being genuinely surprised by him.
He has better verses believe it or not
He has better verses. The one on Johnny P's Caddy with Benny the Butcher, one of the best verses in hip hop ever omm
Nah his verse on "off deez" is his best imo.
You definitely have not listened to enough Cole
@@KingBenny knock tha hustle is one of my favs fs
Just the other day I asked my ups driver if he preferred Kdot or Cole and he said Cole.
I asked why and he said Cole was more relatable and wasn’t always in poetry mode.
Cole is legendary.
Cole is aimed at the common man ngl
Nobody can make me hate an artist more than the fans making shit more than what it is.
Realest comment I've seen
Real.
Kendrick Lamar and drake and jcole meat grinders
Also the haters that take away the greatness of a album
Corny ngl
Benny made a mention of the lack of energy in J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only. Now, this is one of my favorite albums by J. Cole because of this, because it illustrates how normal this man’s life really is. Despite living through the death of friends, his fatherhood fatherhood and his incarceration, the man in the story lives a life that is normal to many people in the demographics of the story. It is the story of a common black man, similar to The College Dropout and good kid, m.A.A.d. city. But instead of the youthful humor and naïveté of these stories, J. Cole’s character was more mature and a lot darker. So a lack of energy did not, in my opinion, take away from the power of 4YEO.
I thought it had some hype songs; in the kind of way, g.o.m.d is a hype song. With the song switching from hype to melodic.
@@destrav4962 p thats on 2014fhd not 4yeo
The song 4YEO is an all-time classic. One of the best storytelling songs ever, portraying itself as a song by a man afraid of death recording it to play to his daughter if he does die.
Cole's that type of person to go to a bar and order a glass of water
Edit: How tf did I blow up?
Honestly me too...
@@KingBenny lol
He's also the type of person to be one of the greatest to do hiphop
Cause that’s all our king needs😂
@@KingBenny same
One thing I think people don’t talk about enough is Cole’s love/rnb songs and features. He just meshes so well with that style.
bro every time I think of Cole I think of Mark saying "Jermaine Cole" it's hilarious
Rdc would have a better skit show than chappelle show ngl
Jermaine?... Cole?
I think in the current music climate it would be next to impossible for an artist to release an album with zero features and for it to do as well as Cole did, it’s massively impressive. Still glad he did decide to change it up tho
Great vid
Idk... it depends on the type of artist... some can pull it off some prolly won't (thx btw)
For Your Eyez Only is a great album. Music is subjective and of course, you don't have to like it. IMO it takes a more mature approach to life and themes around it. It very well encapsulates the growth of Cole not musically, but also as a person.
Cole is one of the greatest lyricist to ever live, he just so happens to live in the mumble rap and tiktok era unfortunately, so it's expected for his music to not be received well by the younger crowd's and called boring 💯💯🤦🏽♂️
this is one of the worst comments ive read in my channel history
@@KingBenny I mean it's facts at the end of the day 💯💯
@@endrykperez412 if his music was great,it would stand out over the noise; especially to old an new heads who want to listen rap-rap. Cole is super popular and successful,so to say this period of time is holding him back is a silly take!
@@KingBennyWhy? Lmao all my friends be listening to the trash artists like yeat and playboi and nle choppa and stuff. The new generation has been accustomed to have short attention spans so that they cant appreciate proper music as it is. If i were to make any of the kids at my school listen to 2014 rn i swear they would not like it because their taste has been accustomed.
How tf can people hate cole and find his music boring he is one of the greatest lyricists to ever exist.
He's got soul and his voice is literally natural autotune
@@kiarce3 exactly jcole is a literal poet at this point.
He gets outclassed by too many better mcs at best he's average his biggest compliment is being compared to Kendrick Lamar
@@rogue9230 sure theres kendrick and the ogs but apart from that I would put jcole over someone like drake anyday.
Not everybody likes his lyricism tbh
There's a certain vibe to a lot of J. Cole's music that I'm really gravitated to. If I were to describe it, his music has this "freshness" to it. It's like if the carefree, cool kid in school who plays sports was turned into music. I don't know how to describe it, but he has a really distinct vibe that I adore. I can only describe it as "fresh", that's all I can say.
I guess vibes is a good way to describe it but the thing with vibes is that they tend to be 50/50
The last verse on 4 yours eyes only is one of the few hiphop verses that made me cry
Yeah I can see that
the first time I heard the line "who ever thought I saw the day I'm drinking ALMOND MILK" my brain totally shifted. I bought 4 your eyez only when it came out but I wasn't into hip-hop in general at the time so I didn't know that it was controversial but I did feel the decline with his sound with KOD
the almond milk line being the thing that made you a fan is INSANE
@@KingBenny it's so camp LMAO
While im not the biggest fan of j cole and at some times he can be a little corny and preachy, boring is the very last word i would use to describe him. hes talented without a doubt and has made some fantastic albums, a few of which are some personal favorites of mine
you are like a rare breed to think J. Cole isn't boring, not saying you'te wrong but not many non J. Cole fans think like that
@@KingBennyhe biggest thing that keeps him from being boring for me is absolutely his production. Just based off of 2014 FHD, you have january 28, 03’ adolescence, a tale of 2 citiez, st. tropez (my personal fav), GOMD, no role modelz, and apparently, all with unique and engaging beats that cole definitely fits well on with his flow.
Edit: also wet dreamz
@@KingBenny I’m a former Cole Stan, and even I can admit he has gotten a bit boring. That’s for many reasons though.
He also doesn’t exactly have a classic,Friday night lights probably still his best body of work and that’s sad when you think about it!
J cole music is only good if you can relate to it , his flow n rhyme skills are good just gotta relate to his lyrics to understand where he comin from
Idk if its only good if you relate but ig relatability is a big thing with cole
I think he's going to have a change of pace, with the off-season, possibly this year with "It's a boy" and The fall-off, he probably planned a sort of "trilogy" of him mostly abandoning conceptuality and starting to focus on the lyrical and production part even more. He released a song called procrastination a couple of hours ago and he said that he's feeling uninspired because it's a lot of pressure on his shoulders. But I think we should have faith in him because he has a lot of skill and he definitely got wiser in those years, I hope that with the next album people will fell in love again with his craft
As A Loyal Cole I Was Definitely defending son like I had a 9-5 in Highschool
I could never
J Cole is a top tire rapper and underrated producer. He will be up with greatest when the show is over. We all know that deep down, the one who know real hip hop al least. K Dot is his twin brother in his own world, just as great.
Haha I did talk ab his producing but I cut it out cause I don't think it mattered to the video
@@KingBenny should have mentioned it, rapping is only half his talent, good video tho 👏
4 your eyes only is my favourite album of all time cuz I’ve got a personal connection with it, but I’m never gonna go round telling everyone that it is objectively the best. We all got our own opinions man
I think in times to come FYEO and KOD will be greater appreciated especially when people start reflecting back on how life was in the years those albums came out. They will realize they are time capsules and great slice of life commentary. But if you’re looking for a vibe, a feel good, to dance, or even something to blast while your cruising, you won’t like those two albums much but when you’re in a reflective space you will appreciate them more.
In the words of the late great DMX."F*CK a beat listen to words in the damn song." 4YEO is an underrated classic.
Yeah basically
I love J. Cole like he’s one of my favorite rappers Fr but your speaking facts
Aye... I tried to be fair and as unbiased as can be which obviously its impossible to be fully unbiased but I wanted to be fair
@@KingBenny yeah I love your videos bro your a W fr
@@Ang3l.888 you a W too dawg
I’m a fan of the big 3 and I have to say Cole is number 1 right now. Drake completely watered down his music besides a few songs here or there, and Kendrick last album doesn’t warrant a long wait. Cole can solidify that spot with this new project he’s hinting towards.
Grippyyyyy
Internet is not real life, Cole is loved forreal
Internet full of dummies lol
@@KingBennypeople just be sayin shit ngl
U got internet fame im real life hot 🔥
It’s impossible to hate j Cole I’ve never hated him I’ve always love him
You the person he's talking about 🤣
I strongly disagree with your assessment about 4YEO only having lyrics as its' selling point. I think it features some of the best production in Cole's catalogue. The beats aren't straight up hip hop beats that have a heavy focus on the hip hop production fundamentals like hi-hats and heavy bass. The production is unique, melodic, beautiful, and jazzy. Instrumentals like For Whom The Bell Tolls, Immortal, Ville Mentality, Change, Neighbors, and 4 Your Eyez Only are my favorites in that aspect. It's not an album meant to be digested casually or everyday and I love that. Cole easily could have come out and made a album similar to 2014 FHD and everybody would be happy. Instead, he pushed himself creatively and artistically. He took a big risk and it's the kind of risk more artists could take. I respect your opinions though. Great video! Loved how it was edited and put together.
I'm not saying the beats are bad or not noteworthy... just that on one album the accumulation of that same sound turns off ppl
@@KingBenny I didn’t say that you said the beats were bad? I was just talking about the production and how i believed you and many others overlook it. The beats don’t appeal to the mainstream and so some people won’t fuck with it which is u fortunate. I love the album though and think it’s top 2 of his catalogue.
4 your eyez only has 3 songs that if you even half pay attention are absolutely poetic and fire, “Change” and “She’s mine pt.1” and “she’s mine pt.2” u gotta give ‘em a listen, imo either of the she’s mine songs are equal or better than songs like mockingbird by Eminem
I agree fully but there's also the album dreamville dropped in 2019 where J Cole worked with others and it saw fan's respecting him
I see where you're coming from when you say most of the beats are too laid back and the lyrics aren't enough to keep you engaged, but when the beat starts playing for Ville Mentality, Change, and Foldin Clothes I just start groovin fr bro. Ik I be meat munchin Cole a lot, but I can't stand for the 4YEO slander. Great video/production quality tho bro, can't believe you only have 18.4k.
I do think the lyrics are engaging, don't get me wrong, but it just lets me feeling like the album is like a 7 when it could be a 10 (and sometimes in listening it does feel like a 10 but it isn't consistently a 10 if that makes any sense) and if you do listen to the album consistently and you're like me, the lyrics are cool but you wish he'd do more with the sounds on the album which are great just not for a hip hop album I guess. He should've had Danger Mouse working on it.
Also yeah... I'm happy having 18k ngl... its pretty cool, 2 months ago I was sitting at 2k subs
@@KingBenny Yeah I understand what you're saying. And oh yeah 100%, I don't mean to undermine your success, I'm just surprised you're not even more successful If you get what I'm sayin' lol.
Came across this channel a few days ago, been watching everything. Quality content my guy, honestly good work.
Thank you! Happy to see the new ppl and rhe support
I just feel like hip-hop has become too critical like whenever I say I think J. Cole is the greatest rapper ever there is always a flock of people that have to say why my opinion is wrong like damn just let me like the music i like
This ^
as a cole fan i know that we're annoying to a degree but tbh what makes me go defensive mode sometimes is how much kendrick fans feel the need to shit on cole out of nowhere whenever they hear his name.
i would say the his name and someone across the room would come just to tell me how kendrick is better
Now, I listen to J Cole ALOT. He is one of my favorite artists, and I can see why so many people didn't like 4 your eyes only or his music in general. You basically summed that up in the video but yeah.. basically there are alot of people who hate him and think he is corny or boring and that's fine! Everyone can hate or love what they want but I feel like something of the hate is unwarranted. The people who hate his music are likely people who like hype music or bangers so to speak. The thing is alot of J Coles music goes over peoples heads and thats why I honestly find it kind of laughable because there so oblivious or they don't even take the time to absorb the music or the lyrics. Like for example, everybody hated the song "Foldin Clothes" but that song actually had a much deeper meaning especially at the end which alot of people didn't catch. I won't get too much into that but that is just one of the examples. If J Cole still being relevant after almost a decade and more isn't a sign that he is worthy of being considered a hip hop legend then I don't know what to tell anybody 🤷
To be clear tho... I don't hate J. Cole lol. But good take tho
@@KingBenny your good bro i know you don't hate him 🤣 lol, I was just venting in the comments towards the haters
@808NASTY fr people that like hype songs are the ones that don't fw cole like that,
you hear them say coles best verse is his a lot verse with 21 savage, lol
4YEO is top 3 albums of off all time imo
I can see if you're a fan of the story personally its just that I can't listen to the album more than like once every other week, so I don't rank it as highly
I wanna fold clothes for you
Dope vid. New Cole fan myself (like last summer new) and FYE is my fave of his personally. Love the vibe and emotion; helps that it helped me through some tuff times
4YEO is definitely easier to take in nowadays compare to when it came out i will say
It’s not even just lyrics his songs are just good as hell
J.cole feature game is very hard when he went for it. Still love that bia london feature. He pulled a drake on her song.
I think J. Cole features are usually great but my favorite isn't that one ngl
@@KingBenny Which one is yours?
He gets called preachy but their is rapper after rapper releasing song after song about drugs, violence and money and it may be a different type of preaching, preaching negativity. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy gangsta shit too but its nice to have a bit of positivity corny or not.
Been my favourite artist since 2008. I do not care. No one else moves me like this man does.
I feel like Cole can make great singles but when he must make his own album most don't hit the mark. If we remove 2014 most of his albums aren't the type you listen to all the way through.
His mixtapes are cool tho
Cap
Off season is better than 2014
@@Gintoki_Madao My comment wasn't on his best album but how when you take his entire catalog into account not all of them are great. Thing is most songs that are people's favourites are from 2014 Forest Hills hence I used it as an example.
Bro u capping. 4YEO & The off season is my shit.
At the end of the day, opinions are just opinions, they aren't always necessarily facts and you can't force your opinions on people. I fuck with Cole's music and that's it. The hiphop community has always been competitive and a lot of projects have never been really appreciated.
respectable comment ngl
2014 FHD one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, definitely top 10 from the 2010’s.
Idk... FHD is cool but I feel it's a little dated. It's not terribly dated but it's notable for me. Maybe someday I'll be nostalgic for that sound and it works better tho
man please no... is an high 7
I thought the same but went back and listened again and can assure you that it isn’t at all dated and is a brilliant project. There’s a reason No Role Modelz has over a billion streams.
Nah
Off season tops it
Relax it wasn't even top 100 lmao
It’s crazy because he clearly tells y’all he is a guy that wants to master things and not look back and think did he give it his all. So when murders his albums people still criticize. Well can he hold his own with features! Bull crap. Now he goes and murders features with huge artist and now it’s well he didn’t do it before. I’ve come to realize that people just want to criticize.
Revenge of the Dreamers II dropped in 2015 and he was on tour for FHD which led to the live album.
I recently discovered you, and your videos are great quality. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see more from you
Hope you stick around! I'm happy you're here

4 your eyez only is about blackness. The story just aids in explaining parts of blackness. Once you see it through this lens, it becomes cohesive. That is why songs like neighbors, folding clothes fit into the album.
I feel like it started with the whole Lil Pump saying fuck J Cole.
That played into it but there's a reason why he said fuck J. Cole and its bc he alrdy had that perception on him yknow
j.cole is the goat, a whole album with no features thats dope
J and 21 collab album...when?
Wouldn't mind that tbh...
J.cole the best rapper out beautiful bodies of work he’s just different man fairly consistent ik his music is for everyone but i can’t say I understand how you still can’t call him great
fire video. easily worth a sub man
Thats dope to hear! Thanks! It's always cool to hear that someone is subbing
I don’t think I overate j Cole but I hardly talk about him and I saw some of my friends saying that he sucked and was genuinely just confused cause i usually talk about how much I love Kanye music and not other rappers but like I fw j Cole and was genuinely confused on why someone would hate him
I feel he way in which you consume an album matters in the way you interpret it.
If I were to listen to a House song in class, it might seem repetitive & annoying. Simply because I'm not dancing or in the mood to do such things.
Same with vulgar songs in genres like Soca, Dancehall, and Hiphop. Some want to get hype, and others want to chill. Some want to lament past relationships, and others want to praise their god(s).
W video. I liked how you added little snippets of your own opinions without completely showing bias throughout the video. Good shit Benny.
I always try to show my personality just cause its what makes me different... but sometimes it can feel like I'm leaning a little heavy into biases. Thanks btw! Happy you enjoyed

The complexity of Animals Remix ft. J. Cole is too much.... but I'll take the compliment lol
i seen cole perform when

Nobody ever hated Cole, it was the people running around yelling "double platinum with no features!!" As if that means anything.
As a Cole fan, I can relate 😅

One thing that pisses me off is how J Cole Doesn't have a number 1 hit but vanilla ice does 💀
As a die hard Cole fan this is so true but real fans will never hate him
The only artist I listen to more than J Cole is Kendrick Lamar. Who gonna replace these two legends? Lil Baby, Roddy Rich, and more are hot but don't have nearly enough bars and flow to compete.
The best part is how the haters don't even bother Cole. He just laughs em off by clowning on them while simultaneously giving some life advice if they are willing to hear.
The dislike of 4YEO makes no sense to me

For your eyes only is vary different you have to have that love for music to pay attention to that in one take
Idk man maybe im just out of the loop but J cole fans seem pretty chill. Nothing like Drake or worse, Eminem fans. Every fanbase has its bad eggs but this one seems generally more wholesome than others.
Kendrick Lamar fans are much worse as Kendrick is more popular. "OmG Kendrick MURDERS EVERY SINGLE ARTIST ON EVERY SINGLE FEATURE!"
Casuals in not just music, but anything (just look at sports or gaming... yikes) so its best to judge a fanbase in totality. And all things considered, J Cole has a decently behaved fanbase
Also, ive never got the feeling that J Cole nor his fanbase were hated. This is an... Interesting video i will say
Had a friend put me on Jcole. At first at didn’t like him, till I heard Friday night lights and the off season
I agree on your take about off season and fhd it helped him

cause the video is about how j cole became overhated... i dont think ppl were calling cole boring back then
4 your eyez only is probably my favourite j cole album
rly?
I love j Cole he's brilliant..but he changed his style from rappers rapper to wise and righteous all the time. He is boring but still brilliant
A boring all time great is crazy... calling bro tim Duncan basically
Reminds me of Common
Great rapper, just boring
honestly jcole albums kod and 4 your eyes only are my personal favorites
Do a Video on Bas next, his catalog is incredible and gets overlooked a lot.
How people feel about 4YEO is how I feel about TPAB. It’s amazing, it just bored the fuck outta me
After J . Cole dropped KOD all I hear is the triplet flow/stutter flow/mumble flow from every rapper like they all had a secret meeting to force feed the people this repetitive Ass Migos/DaBaby/Lil Baby flow anybody rapping in that flow to me has to get knocked down at least - 5 attributes based off the lack of creativity it demands from the artist to make a song they actually put effort into creating 🗣️💯 Rakim , Nas , PAC , Souljah Slim , & Pimp C IMO The Most Impactful , Influential , & Copied Artists That Eva Came To Grace To Mic 🎤
The crazy thing is Kendrick fans make J Cole fans look like pacifists or like Richard Feynman. Kendrick fans generally suck him off to no end. I like both artists but Kendrick fans are by far more insufferable. And yet Kendrick doesn't seem to get hate for a lot of his toxic fandom. Seems a little hypocritical to me.
Idk kendrick fans just kinda dormant most the time is the thing
I aint like a big ass cole fan but it makes me sad that he’s closer to calling it quits after he just opened his music to features again.
I’ve been saying this for a while 4 your eyez only was the stepping stone for Kendrick Lamar Mr. Morale! They are like in the same tier
J.cole will always be a hip hop star/goat and he has classic albums especially with 2014 forest hills drive
His classics are debatable
2014 is his only undebatable classic imo... at least as of rn
@@KingBennyoff season might be a future classic, and 4yeo might be one imo
J cole has no classics, and that’s his biggest problem. He has albums that’s considered classic by his die hard fans but not to the rest of the community! Let’s just be real! As I stated somewhere else above;Friday night lights is still his best body of work to date!
@@andreettienne3231bro just because you didn’t listen to his albums doesn’t mean they’re not classics. For example I used to not understand all the hype around Kendrick Lamar until I sat down and listened to good kid madd city and that has been my 4th favorite album to date. That was also the turning point where Kendrick became my 3rd favorite artist. I didn’t know back then that it was a classic. Most people who say albums aren’t a classic haven’t actually just sat down and listened to it while focusing on the music. Almost all top rappers albums are considered classics mostly by their own fans. Kendrick’s albums are considered classics by a lot more because he has a much bigger fanbase who don’t sit down and listen to Coles albums.
J cole soundcloud era was great also
Always so good !
Haters gon make fans act diff also great vid

After "4 your eyes only", Cole was never the same in my opinion, and I lost a lot of love for his music afterwards. 4 your Eyes only is my favorite body of work from his and I love Kendrick but 4 your eyes only was hella nice. The Off Season was a letdown in my opinion, so I disagree with you King Benny. I was hoping 2018 Cole would've delivered a much more layered rap project with a very intriguing story in it but everything went left in my opinion.
