  • I'm almost sorry about the video and singing quality, but needs must.
Tumbalalaika is a Yiddish riddle song. Enjoy I suppose.

Thank you for sharing. I love the melody and the original language I find 'mesmerizing'. It's nice to know what the words really are.

There seems to be a couple different translations to this song. When I was in elementary school, our music teacher had us sing this version:
    Maiden, maiden tell me true
What can grow without the dew?
What can burn for years and years,
What can cry and shed no tears?
    Chorus
    Silly boy the answer true
A stone can grow without the dew.
Love can burn for years and years,
A heart can cry and shed no tears.
    Chorus

Thank you for sharing. This has brought back many wonderful memories for me.
Years ago when I was a music teacher I taught this song with all Tumbala Tumbala Tumbalalaika for the chorus as I simply could not grasp the extra words, and the verses were only slightly different to yours:
I started with the chorus and movements as per directions below - only for the chorus with one final 'heh' at the end of the last chorus:
      Maiden, Maiden, tell me true
What can grow without rain or dew?
What can Burn for years and years,
What can cry and shed no tears.
      Chorus
Listen while I tell you true
A stone can grow without rain or dew
Love can burn for years and years
A heart can cry and shed no tears!
Chorus - the chorus had the children slapping their thighs on beat one, clapping hands on beat two and throwing their hands in the air above their shoulders while snapping their fingers.
The FINAL chorus ends with a loud 'Heh!' while dramatically opening both hands with spread fingers holding the pose for a moment then dropping the arms to the side.
This is such a beautifully haunting song. Wherever I taught, the whole school would join together at assembly to sing this song. What an impact that was.

Oo! That one sounds nice! My choir teacher made us sing it like this:
Thinks a boy, now what he do?
Thinks and thinks the whole night through.
Is there a girl both clear and true?
A girl he may marry whom should he choose?
      Maiden, maiden, tell me again
What can grow without the rain?
What can grow for many long years,
What can cry without any tears?
Don’t be a fool, why ask me again?
Crystals can grow without any rain,
Love can burn for many long years,
Hearts can cry without any tears.
