Red is never a constant hot. Always a traveler. You can tell which 2 are the travelers because they will be in the same wire. The common is either the hot or the switch leg.
I had this situation last friday but with a 4 way in the middle. The thing never worked right but it worked close enough that it didn't bother them for years and years lol I got it sorted after a while but it took some headscratching to get there. The lady didn't know it was a 4 way & told me it was one of the 3 ways that took a crap. so i replaced one 3 way before noticing there was a 4 way in the middle, once i noticed that then i figured maybe it was always hooked up wrong at the 4 way. Turns out that was the case & voila bobs your auntie, it all worked perfectly after that. Wahhooo
Lol gotta love it when someone fixes something and makes some else's job harder. Lol this is y I try to ask questions lol u never know what u might get from them lol 😆
That hat is the greatest thing! Gotta protect that dome. Thank goodness for smart bulbs, dimmers will go away. Pretty much all my bulbs are smart, voice dimming etc.
@thehandymanexperience226 well they are just cheap smart bulbs, they link to Google or Alexa. Pretty handy. I can kick the lamps in the living room on or off from anywhere, just by telling Google to do it. Google turn left lamp to 25% and change the color to orange. I have my porch light set to turn on and off automatically.
Working live I would wear rubber gloves as a extra measure of protection. Sometimes those wires in those older homes have compromised insulation. Wow that 16 year old water heater is still in service. I wish the new ones would last half that long.
Dam I had to get out the popcorn this was like a double feature. Bottom line you got it done by using process of elimination. I see your power screwdriver has become the go to tool haven’t seen that crappy Milwaukee drill. Pick up extra stars for patience 👍👍
i think that black cloth tape is tesa tape, usually u see it used with automotive wiring harnesses, i love that stuff. Strange to see it being used there.
👍 Easy...... Hate them old cloth covered wires..... You know even in the early 70s as I was in electrical school we didn't have cloth covered wires but ☝️ all residential wiring was aluminum. (in eastern Europe)
That is BX home slice. Steel casing

In the rental world everything goes, I can't always go off colors since probably the last guy probably goofed it up.
Well done Brian. Those things boggle my mind.
Thanks James!!! Yea I'm getting a bit better at them now. In the beginning, they caused my alot of problems!
Nice job! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!!!!!
Great work. I never would have found that panel hidden in a kitchen cabinet 😂
Me either! She had to tell me! Crazy stuff!!

Nowadays, Bob is your Auntie.
bump cap saved me when I was in an attic and got a bad thigh cramp. I quickly moved to stop the cramp and hit a nail with my cap.
I can't wait to actually start breaking it in

The last guy who worked on those switches did not leave you a lot wire to work with... But nice work Brian! Thanks for posting!
Yea for sure! And plus gave me extra work lol 😆 🙃

Lol I love the Milwaukee but it's not needed lol the the electric screw driver Is awesome. Thanks!!!
All that tape on the wire nuts is a sure sign that an amateur was in there.

Yea who knows this is a first for residential
Says oh look cloth wiring and proceeds to stick fingers in box. Not too bright.
This is true 👍, if they were in worse shape I would have shut the power off.
Are you in the Southeast?
Maybe
Bro i dont know why u insist to work with live wires
I had to, u didn't wanna take a chance and shut hurt meeting off. It's not like I wanted to on this one
Why do you need the power off to change a switch Brian?
@@danb781 one should always turn the power off when working on electrical if they can

Luckily I barley see aluminum. Good thing on this one it was just friction tape or what ever it's called
Hahahahaha.
I wasn't laughing on this job lol
Dun dun dun... 4 way is just as bad.
Yep I could only imagine
