The color of the shadow depends on the surroundings of your character. If you’re in a forest for example, the shadow will be green. Normally, its dark bluish purple since they sky is blue. Also, there are artistic/abstract choices where you draw the shadows independently of surroundings e.g. pink shadows with blue lighting. All the other tips are very helpful.
usually, the color of the shadow and lighting are complementary towards each other, ex: purple to yellow red to green blue to orange ect. ect ultimately it changes from person to person and their preferences, style, and the context of the artwork Hope this was somewhat helpful
the fact he sounds like his voice cracks 24/7 edit: nahhh im wrong he sounds like me when i wake up in the morning and my throats dry and sore af but im forced to speak because my mom doesnt understand when i try to tell her something in signs💀
NOTE: Dont always use dark purple. Dont use black, but the color depends on the area and lighting. Outside at night would be normally blue/purple, but lets say its day and your in a forest like area full of presumably green foliage, then maybe use green. Or a hellish landscape of lava and fire, maybe red.

Fields of Entropy on amphetamines Aetherial Sea: There's no land, so light bounces off the water that happens to change colors depending where you are
This is a great tutorial!! But here's my two cents- You can shade with whatever colors, and it will greatly change the atmosphere of the drawing! Purple is a perfect medium color because its both warm and cool but reds and greens also work. HOWEVER. Make sure you set your shadow layers to "multiply" after bringing down the opacity!! It will make your shadows mix with your base colors better and it'll look more realistic. But at the end of the day everyone has different ways of doing things and that's okay. Have fun drawing!
I was about to comment this because the shadow should be whatever color the ambient light is in the piece, so when your character is outside it should be blue when its day and purple when dark when your inside try whatever the dominant background color is, and lastly if your light source is really powerful and there are walls around just use that color but darker.
Tip: DONT ALWAYS USE PURPLE!!!! Use different colors depending on the light! I like using dark purple, and orange-browns. Make sure to use multiply when it comes to orange!!
NOO DON’T TELL THEM TO MAKE THE SHADOWS PURPLE NOOO Edit: Before you go any further, I just want to clarify a few things :) I wrote the original comment in a rush, sorry if it wasn't clear! Generally speaking, for more realistic styles you would have to think of bounced light to color the shadows, which is what I was talking about below. I hinted at it a little with the "it depends on a lot of things," but just to elaborate I was referring to more stylized/unique styles, and things like the setting and the situation that the piece is depicting. It all comes down to the personal preference of the artist (as said in the replies below.) This comment was just for the artists who go more for a realistic coloring style, because using purple for everything tends to be a common beginners mistake for us :D Edit #2: I noticed there was quite the debate in the comments about shading, but honestly, EVERYBODY down there is absolutely right! Some of them clearly contradict, but art is such an abstract concept that it's impossible to confine it to one color or one technique. I'm going to paste a reply I made to another commenter, just for further clarification: Artists use purple and blue as defaults for their shading, since they're more natural for shadows. Because using purple and blue is such a common and mostly unexplained occurrence in a lot of more professional art pieces, beginners often observe this and abuse these colors in their own work without knowing exactly why they're being used, which is what my original comment was attempting to explain. I've found that especially for younger artists, directly telling them to use specific colors/tools/methods can be detrimental to their overall improvement, since there will be time wasted on identifying and un-learning these habits. I'm a strong believer of teaching the art babies the theory first, not the hacks or steps. Spoon feeding them information like this gives them less room to move or experiment early on, which is such a fun part of the process and I'd personally hate to take that away from them. I've seen so many awesome and creative shading styles that break out of the ordinary or typical style of coloring/shading that still follow the rules of the game. Prime examples are the art in "Beetlehands" on webtoon, or Lore Olympus. Another two absolutely godly webtoons that follow the same idea of cell shading like Cas3yart, but change their colors to fit the environment are "Unholy Blood" and "Finding Wonderland." And for examples of art SOLELY using purple as a shading color, look for "microHUNTER." In this specific case, while the drawings *are* all a little flat/similar looking, the artist is skilled enough to pull it off in their work. also i'm clarifying again, that like you mentioned, the tips I gave are only applicable to young artists who are specifically looking to color in a way that closer imitates real life Also read the replies, they add a lot Original comment (ignore it's no longer valid): Guys it doesn’t work for all cases. If your general atmosphere is purple, make the shadows purple. If it’s green, make them green. If it’s blue, make it blue. You don’t use purple if the entirety of your scene is green or something it depends on a lot of things including the way you want to express contrast in your piece ;-; great tips overall though pfft love your art
THANK YOU!! I was about to say the same! I think it's a super bad idea to say that shading should always be purple. Using the same colour for shading every time is a quick way for it to grow stale and your art to get frustratingly samey, especially for beginners. At least it was like that for me! To me it's a little like how using the same pose every time gets really stale after a bit. Purple is a great go to for learning, I personally find it a bit flat in my own art, maybe because I've used it so many times in the past, but don't be afraid to experiment! It's as easy as transparancy locking your layer and going over it a few times with different colours. And maybe you'll end up liking the purple best but hey, you could also find a hue that better suits the character or the background!
And if you do make it purple on procreate, I know it's kinda stupid because everybody probably knows this, but just remember you can change the color to your preferred color🙃
Warm light casts cool shadows, cool light casts warm shadows. Add gradients to your shadows, too. Wouldn't use one color shadows on more realistic art either, it looks pretty flat sometimes. Having shadows implies having light, but doesn't always show it, also draw the lighting itself too
I’m not a very good artist, but I think that the shadows could look cool for some styles if you don’t lower the opacity(or just lower it by a very small amount). It gives it a more cartoony and dramatic feel.
I feel like the moment I switched from procreate to Ibis paint x everyone started coming out with really cool and helpful tutorials for procreate am I cursed or somthing
Also use clipping mask to make it look extra clean, and have your color and line art on different layers so your line color isn’t affected by the clipping mask

Instead of having to put down the opacity, you could always just make it a multiply layer. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Then just adjust your shadow, like you would adjust any other part of the colour composition
I usually make the shadows the complementary colour of the light's colour.
