      Maybe the village had a custom of human sacrifice and they happened to catch some foreigners in it and the custom continued till late 80s
      Or it was just a periodic religious practice lost in history and it's not strange because considering the religious similarities between the two religions it is more likely that some Greeks got settled in India and we're unfortunately caught in some sort of disaster

      The human sacrifice is what I was thinking too, maybe that are the times that the tribes lived there and the visitors met a gruesome fate....then the tribe moved on. I know it may be a reach but stranger things have gone on....and if you want a smile not totally serious, big foot or the abominable snow man...

      Since the usual scientific explanations do not match, that’s an indication it’s time to turn to ancient historical accounts that have been unfairly discounted, such as the Hebrew Bible.
      There are several cataclysmic events that could be considered and several problems with the methods of dating that are most commonly used, mainly the gap theories begun in the 1800s but still untested today that insert huge stretches of blank space into history rather than accepting those gaps are unlikely in the course of human records. Given the notorious difficulty of getting accurate carbon dates past only a short time in the past, other methods of dating might need to be considered.
      If, for example, bodies had been trapped in ice for a long time after a cataclysmic event such as a huge flood pre glaciers, there would still be plenty of flesh on them to decay once the bodies finally were freed of the ice. Would carbon dating be accurate on really ancient frozen bodies? We always assume so, but keep in mind that such dating can throw curve balls like live shellfish clocking in at over a thousand years old. It would also account for a variety of family types of bodies had been washed together into one place. Pre diluvian humans seem to have been larger than usual if you take the many flood tales of antiquity into account, but the artifacts do seem quite late for that ancient of a time frame. Also, the sub families that DNA can identify as originating from India would not have developed until after the Great Flood, so that would make it seem these are actually ante diluvian but still carrying the recessive traits of great height even as some of the other families were already shrinking down to a more familiar size.
      Given the findings that some were unusually large and there was such a cache of artifacts with them, these very well could be members of the great migrations that occurred when people spread out from the cradle of civilization after the great divide of the languages. This would have been far longer than 800 years ago, but again there are so many flaws emerging in regards to our previous gold standard dating methods that I’m not sure any of them are going to give us solid clues at this point in time. A caravan of travelers meeting with the unpredictable freezes of the Himalayas could again result in more than one party being trapped in ice at different times and the freed and washed into the pool due to its placement and enough cycles of warmer weather to unlock them.

    I think that it's a natural death trap that lies along a well known pilgrimage route that has been used for centuries. If there's snow on the ground people wouldn't realize that they were walking out onto a lake and occasionally groups of people would fall through the ice. Also the surrounding terrain seems to all slope down toward the lake. If you slipped in icy conditions, you would probably start sliding toward the lake and not be able to stop yourself. You might hit your head on some rocks on the way down, which would explain the head injuries, then you would splash into the lake. The frigid water of the lake would immediately take your breath away and you'd drown. That's just what makes sense to me. Who knows?

    • @swissuz
      @swissuz 3 года назад +10

      This makes some sense to me. The Himalayas are treacherous under the best of conditions. If the earliest group were traveling in warming weather, it's possible that as the elevation increased they would find more and more snow and ice. A group of them may have been crossing the lake, not realizing there was a lake under their feet. It may have given way as the number of people crossing the lake increased, causing them to fall at relatively the same time. From the images, it looks like the lake level could have been much deeper, and over time the water level receded. That doesn't explain the head wounds or if they happened before or after death. If they were crossing with their items on top of their heads, that might explain the pots and other items found with them.
      I need to watch it again. The taller people are curious and I have a lot of questions about them. Very interesting! Thank you!

  • @bertjilk3456
    @bertjilk3456 3 года назад +26

    My mind is drawn to some feature in the area that has caught multiple parties out over the centuries.
    The first thought, as others have suggested, is that perhaps a nearby route is particularly hazardous, and people have simply fallen to their deaths.
    Another possibility is that people have sought shelter from bad weather and frozen to death. If the depression that the lake lies in is affected by katabatic winds (otherwise known as cold-air drainage or downhill winds) then those taking shelter could unwittingly find themselves in a much colder and more hostile place. The same theory (katabatic winds) killed a group of Swedish hikers, and has also been proposed as a credible theory for the Dyatlov Pass mystery (this time a group of Russian hikers).
    Regardless of what caused people to meet their fate there, I assume that seasonal snow melts caused the bodies to collect in the lake, only to be discovered by the team in the 1900s.

  • @axiomic

    Good video, thanks! I'm curious, was there a mention of the fact that this lake looks like the centre of a large 'funnel'? The mountainsides are quite smooth and icy and all slope down to the lake. This could explain the head injuries, if the bodies slid down the mountain they would have hit rocks on the top of their head on the way down. It was likely multiple travelling parties throughout the centuries who had met their fate in bad weather, and their bodies slid down to one point. Only issue is that looking closer on Google Earth, this surrounding mountainside is not particularly large compared to neighbouring mountains.. so why would this particular spot have collected so many bodies... hmm, perhaps most mountain sides lead to valleys, not funnel like lakes.

    • @HistoryCalling
      @HistoryCalling  3 года назад +7

      No, I don't recall any mention of a funnel. That's a fascinating theory though :-)

    • @nomadpurple6154
      @nomadpurple6154 3 года назад +8

      It would seem that natural ice/water movement isn't shifting the remains downwards as happens in most places.
      If this happened in more places then we would also see numerous bodies there, simply through build up over time.
      I agree that this would be close to a common pathway in the himalayas and bad weather is the most likely cause of death. It doesn't need to be giant hailstones but the cold alone could catch unprepared non-locals. Many diseases leave no trace in bones so some could easily be from various illnesses.
      Group A is over enough time to be random individuals from separate travelling parties. And since local legend refers to pilgrims this seems reasonable. It would also fit would various illnesses as people travelled for cures.
      Group B if indicating well fed then they were not poor so I would expect there to references to be found somewhere in archives of wealthier families indicating a journey or travelling route. It maybe that this has yet to be connected with India due to poor descriptions of the destination and experts in one field of study not being aware of this particular skeleton collection so far away. I would hope that further DNA comparisons might help narrow who they were related to.

    Having skeletons who's DNA was more Greek is not as fantastical as it may sound, as Hellenic culture had been spread this far by Alexander the great. In fact there were quite a few towns and small cities that retained their greek way of life out this far right through the Seleucid period and beyond and were frontier towns on the trade routes with China

    Lesser known fact is that, Hindu culture spread way way beyond Greece in history. There are shocking facts about linkages of Hinduism with even Latin America and Australia so the group B individuals must have been doing the “Swargarohanam” which is a practice in Hindus to Die while reaching heights of Himalayas but possibly not all could make it beyond this point hence probably the burial place next to lake. I think there is a strong possibility for this.

    The Tibetan book of the dead maybe a source to look into. It outlines in detail the ritual and preparation for the body and soul for its departing of this life as well as the treatment of the body after death which is considered an empty vessel to be be given back to nature. It even describes how the body is to be position. It's worth noting.

    Lake Nyos in Afica experienced a catastrophic outgassing of carbon dioxide in 1985. The released carbon dioxide essentially suffocated more than 1,700 people living in the area. Maybe a periodic some release of some type of gas might have been responsible for the deaths.

    It's possible that the people who showed a genetic affinity with the Mediterranean may have been part of a group with genetic and cultural ties to the old Greco-Bactrian kingdom that once existed in the area. While the kingdom was gone for about 1000 years by the 8th century AD, the Mediterranean populations that once lived and ruled in the Indo-Greek kingdom that existed in what is now Afghanistan and Pakistan were probably still living in the area.

Fascinating.

    Perhaps Group B were on a pilgrimage to the lake to view the remains of Group A which someone may have discovered the same way as guys in 1942, the lake was thawed.
    You could suggest that the weather trapped them and they either succumbed to the elements or even those that died first were put in the lake by the initial survivors, who later all perished as well
    The person in Group C may have just been unlucky. Stumbled across the thawed lake then was trapped by rapidly changing weather conditions
