- Aquaponics fish tank installation, and how to easily install the uniseals. Shop tips with jigs and fixtures! How to make the siphon stand pipe guard! Install a siphon brake!
I saw a guy who took a section of the pipe and heated it with a heat gun and shoved it over a glass bottle to flare it outwards like a bugle , after it cooled it was used as a way to reverse flare the pipes or reduce the size by heating it then shoving the pipe into the flared end , this is very fast too! why channel locks and not a ratchet.
I love how you used the all thread for pushing the pipe through the uniseal. Genius!
I have spent months studying home aquaponics and found an awesome website at Keiths Ponics Site (google it if you're interested)
Just climb inside and do it, then you only need to push out that cpl/few inches. Great 👍 project however and thank you for sharing 🙏
Yes, thanks
Thank you for sharing this video!!! I love the way you use the reducer in the fish tank.
Thanks mate....I was up on most of what you were doing...BUT...the final addition of the downpipes with the right-angles on the inlets was a new one for me...will do it clockwise being from OZ...lol. THANK you for sharing buddy, keep up the good work.
This is a good method!
A chamfer would make it a little easier to get started, likely make the wiggling non-necessary.
I.E.: File or sand paper at 45 on the pipe edge for 30 seconds or so.
I'd also mark the depth of penetration on the pipe being stabbed before I began.
You saved me from alot of cussing and rage, thank you.
Don - This is another really helpful post. Thank you for sharing!!!!
Uniseals demo was helpful but direction was reversed. Designed to go from inside the vessel to the outside. Not so critical when it is just an overflow such as in the demo, but wherever there is depth and pressure, it becomes more of an issue.
if you file the end of the pipe going into the compression fitting(like a pencil sharpener),it doesn't damage the seal....And when you glue larger pipes than 2',it is a good idea to use primer before applying the glue..less failed joins..
+Steven Brown Thanks my friend
Awesome idea. How about using a hand drill with a hex nut bit on the end? Saves on the twisting by hand.
For me --- sometimes finding the tool takes longer than the faster way of doing things, but you are right!
Wow you're interested in aquaponics I see!
I'm thinking of making a huge aquaponics greenhouse on my farm this summer.
Yeah, I actually am 90% done with an indoor aquaponics system, using a swirl filter and various grow beds. Once done, I plan on joining the ranks of Donald and others and share the joy and pain...
I'm hoping to put about 4600 sq ft in greenhouse over the next 2 years if all works out the way I am hoping.
I have several small sites targeted for ponds of varying sizes which will serve both as irrigation and storage while allowing me to raise fish at the same time.
Hi Don. Great job but one suggestion. it's best to use petroleum jelly rather than soap because soap removes the fishes protective coating leaving them vulnerable to disease.
Petroleum jelly breaks down rubber and the soap can be washed off.
Thank you very much. You are a genius
You've done that before have you? :D I am in the process of building my first aquaponic system and I admire your knowledge and cool attitude as you demonstrate the assembly. Thanks for sharing
Great video! What size of pump was used and how many to run those tanks? Thank you.
I LOVE YOUR CONSTRUCTION
Nice video. I am collecting info and materials for my own build.
.. counter clock-wise for the northern hemisphere ...
Great video is there a follow up to this video ? so that we can see how the fish are doing?
Hey Donald thanks for the insight- am just about to plumb my system up but am starting with two fishtanks-was thinking of slo-ing one to the next then sloing that to the radial flow filter ect but i see you keep the fishtanks separate do you-where have you plumbed it all to-ta Bev
Use tin snip’s to cut the bottom of the pipe, much easier.
Thanks Donald you connected the missing link in my aquponics
I am glad that my posts can be helpful. thanks for the comment!
Great video!
If you use zip ties, cut the end off with toe nail clippers and you won't have a sharp edge to snag everything else. Also, are you using a one part PVC glue or leaving off the cleaner?
+Stuart Warren Thanks for the tip. I don't worry about the cleaner on the joints, there is minimum pressure in these pipes, I don't worry about leaks, I worry that a joint might come apart. The glue is my security. Thanks my friend---Don
I am looking for COMMERCIAL parts for Aquaponic in USA. Is there any well know supplier of Aquaponics parts in USA?
I like your setup, is there any difference having your drain pipe right at the center versus closer to the outlet wall where you can catch more solid waste due to the swirling effect of your water?
It should not make a difference on the drain location.
Hello, nice video but i have a question, how do you connect the pump to those tubes?
These are the overflow tubes, they just drain. the pump in the sump tank is connected with vinyl hoes and to a barbed fitting.
Donald, do you remember the stand-pipe length you cut them to. About to receive 4 totes today and figured I'd copy what works. Thanks for sharing
Robert Madden The stand pipes in the bell siphon that uses the the p-trap underneath, was cut at 7 inches and the clearance between the top of the stand pipe and inside of the bell tube is 3/4 inch. the bell will float, it should be weighted down so the system will burp and make a quick siphon action. I hope this is what you were asking. Don
Well that answered my question regarding stand pipes in the bell Siphon. Lol, I was saving that one for later. Sorry Donald, but I meant what was stand pipe length in fish tank from bottom to the T fitting where the h2O exits fish tank. Again, thanks
Robert Madden The bottom of that stand pipe I have the flared end terminating it with notches cut into it to allow water to enter since it is setting on the bottom of the tank--- the length then was determined and set to where I wanted the top height of the water in the tank--- just make sure you use a "t" fitting at the top of the stand pipe so as not to create a siphon situation which might not be good for the fish in the tank.--- If you need the exact length that I used--- I could measure it tomorrow and get back with you---Don
nice work ! you are the man sir .Now that I'm here can I sell you a nice hat made in America
doesn't water flow clockwise in the northern hemisphere?
very helpful post !!!
KAYODE IDOWU
DOES THE THREE DRAIN STAND PIPES DRAIN THE TAN WATER INTO 3 DIFFERENT GROWING BEDS?
+KAYODE IDOWU They all drain into the sump tank and from there it pumps into the grow beds--- thanks for the comment my friend, Don
GRATITUDE 💥🐟💥
dish soap will kill your fish, and microbes.. you'd be better off to use olive oil or vegetable oil.. cocoanut oil or something like that. I noticed you had a floater at the end of the video.. i'll bet that habit make have brought that about. Other than that, nice video.. nice set up. I am a life long aquarist with a couple 125 gallon tanks and a few other smaller ones... the smaller the tank the less water you have and the less forgiving they will be to having foreign contaminants introduced. You seem to be using either 275 gallon or 330 gallon ibc totes as your tanks so it'll be somewhat forgiving, but still poison is poison to the fish. i use vinegar to clean my tanks it won't harm your system, fish or beneficial bacteria. I hope this helps you in some way.
Thank you very much for your knowledge and input my friend---Don
also the dawn isn't a lubricant, it's actually a cement. Probably doesn't matter for your uses, but one day it might matter :)
do you have a video of the actual filtration system itself?
This is as close a video that I have for the filter system; ruclips.net/video/undKvWZoJ1Y/видео.html
Use mineral oil, not soap. It's natural and won't hurt the fish, plants, or the rubber seals.
next time use butter by uniseal, its better for your fish, check out my chanel for aquaponics iddeas. greetings from Romania. great info by the way
Also, what type of paint do I need to paint these IBC tanks please?
Robert Madden I used Fusion paint--- If I remember, 2 cans per IBC. this paint will fuse to plastic. the paint to keep the tanks darker and not support algae growth.
I knew you had a handle on it. Thank you sir. I suppose fusion paint can be purchased at lowes our home depot. Thanks again
Robert Madden also Wal-Mart
Fancy design for the insertion...why dont you use a file to bevel the end of the pipe!? And dont mix black and white pipe. they are 2 different materials. Ive fixed many plumbing jobs that mixed the two.
Nice job otherwise :)
BECAUSE we all know soap is wonderful for fish tanks! LAUGHING
+Zak White lmao; I was thinking the same , maybe some horizontal gold fish would do the trick ! , easy to count when floating !! :)
There are many factors in learning aquaponics. One place I found which succeeds in merging these is the Keiths Ponics Site (check it out on google) without a doubt the most incredible course i've seen. Check out this amazing website.
Thanks for the Video! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (do a google search)? It is a smashing one off product for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate finally got astronomical success with it.
I discovered your video on Fast Track Grower - there's lots useful videos there that will help out
"the right direction for the northern hemisphere" ... lol nonsense....
