Single Bell Siphon Running Multiple Beds in the Aquaponic System
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 июл 2024
- Hi Folks. Set up a single bell siphon that's running multiple flood & drain beds in the aquaponic system which will grow a few different types of ginger. Using a single siphon on a small set up like this is a great way to save a bit of coin on the parts rather than making up individual siphons for each bed.
Will be posting a clip on how I'll be planting the gingers & the different varieties I'm growing in these barrels in the coming days.
I sell Uniseals at a low price to help the Aussie backyarder save a bit of coin. Check out my prices in the link below & feel free to shop around for a better price & postage rates.

clay issue i guess could make bigger sleeve with holes or screen so stops the interferrence
Silicone grease is your friend here. Makes the rubber slide over the plastic is inert, and provides a decent seal as well as refreshing the rubber.
Excellent explanation and demonstration. Nothing is assumed, no missing steps. Thank you.
Love this clip Rob, especially your definition of "caned". My plants were caned , not only by the sun but the dry westerly last week. Happy growing to all, lets not be caned this summer
😅 Hope you have a top season mate.
Cheers.
I just found this and it's just in time for us here. We were talking about extending out our AP system grow beds but weren't real sure how to accomplish that. This really helps so much. Thanks!
Glad it's given you a few ideas Ann.
Hope the modifications go well & happy growing.
Rob.
Rob, cheers.
I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now.
You inspire me to start up my own aquaponics system. I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet simply because of the initial setup and start up cost. A small matter.
I plan on starting with a small indoor aquarium setup, then expand as I grow in experience.
Nevertheless, I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for sharing and showing the many ups and downs of a backyard system.
Keep em growing. :)
Hi there & thanks :) Have seen some very productive systems run on guppies in aquariums with small trays filled with pebbles as grow beds.
Cheers & have fun with the system. 👍
The best aquaponics video! Very good idea and informative! Thank you sir for sharing your idea!
Cheers Oscar.
I want a HUGE bowl of Cocoa Puffs now!
😃
Thanks for all the info, it's really informative and I feel more confident about setting up my own flood and drain system in my living room😊
Hope it's working well for you Lisa :)
The cuff around the water input is a fantastic little tip!
Definitely makes connecting the pipe work a lot easier 👍
Cheers mate.
Thanks for the update and ideas on your system, Rob.
No problem Harry.
Hope you're having a great weekend mate. 👍😊
this is the best video I watched in making the bell siphon and aquaponics..subscribed!!
Hi there & thanks. I have another that goes through a complete build if it interest you at all.

Rob.
Thank you Rob...
Saves space nicely.
Hi T & hope it helped with a few ideas. 👍
Cheers & all the best,
Rob.
I love your fancy work bench for gluing the pipe fittings. Great video too very informative. I subscribed.
😅Am thinking about marketing them.
Cheers Evelyn.
Awesome work Rob, you are really an inspiration and a master of the UniSeal :)
I like the workbench/up-cycled ironing board :D :D
Best portable bench I've ever had Jason. 👍😉
Cheers mate & all the best.
nice videos.. from single barrel setup to more containers... keep it up.. and thank you. thinking of starting one myself had watched other videos but this is very informative.
Glad it helps you out with a few ideas.
Cheers & have a top one.
Fantastic advice, I watched many of your links. Very clear instructions and inspired me to put sone work back into some aquaponics again, thanks ✌️
You've definitely earned my subscription 👍
Thanks PFP.
Cheers & have a top one. 👍👍
Fantastic videos, they are all great. Thanks to you I understand what to be aware of.
Nice to know it helped some mate. 👍
Cheers & have fun with the build.
Rob.
You are awesome !!! Love all the way from India !!!
Cheers FAHAD. 👍
I think this type of setup is even better than the regular long cut Half Barrel systems :-)
I think so George as you don't need to build a frame to keep the beds in shape. Does hold a bit less media now I've cut them down though.
Cheers mate & hope all's well down your way.
This is such valuable information! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very amazing set up idol.
great stuff. thank you for providing this information. very glad I found your channel.

So the key of a good suction is water tight. The reasons why I’m not getting my suction work. Good lesson thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
another great idea Rob. Thanks for sharing
Glad you found it helpful Jether.
Cheers.
I use a silicone sealant instead of glue for my pressure pipe. That way i can dismantle and reassemble. Seals up just fine, even if it gets bumped or moved.
Have seen a few folks use it now 👍
Cheers mate.
great videos, great personality and tons of information... glad i subbed to your channel

Rob Bob's Backyard Farm & Aquaponics
your videos are super easy to follow, i have a koi carp fish pond the size of 2 bathtubs with 12 fish, how many plants can i feed with that? will the rain plug the system?
I was given a system but need to know what things have a reason to be ....If I send you a pic with a couple questions can you give me a couple answers???
Hey Rob,
My name is Akeisha and I live on a small island in the Grenada Grenadines known as Petite Martinique. I just want to say that your videos have been very helpful in learning about Aquaponics overall. Aquaponics has never been seen or heard of on my island before now. Therefore learning from scratch and using your advice went a long way. I have used your links to source some of the items that could be shipped to my location ( Amazon) and the rest I had to use what I could find in our local hardware store.
I have watched all of your videos and built a system based on what could be sourced online and here as well.
I started watching your videos back in February of 2018, because we have an issue with water supply in Agriculture. Our island has no river or streams, no lakes either. Our main source of water comes from rain water harvesting which is stored in our built in cisterns. We store on average, a total of 10,000 gallons or more of water each year, based on the size of our storage tanks.
But still our dry seasons can be very harsh and nothing except cactus and a few weather resistant trees can survive . We import most of our fresh fruits and vegetables from the mainland, which most times are of very poor quality and very expensive.
Because of what I have learned from you and a few others here on RUclips ,our dreams of a annual sustainable harvesting system became a reality. I have been awarded by our ministry of Agriculture and they did a story on our Aquaponics ...
Please have a look at my story using this link ...
ruclips.net/video/qmKqlKbmwiE/видео.html
This is what we have done so far and I hope that I can still learn more from you. I hope that we can also expand our system in the future. ..
Also here is another link that will take you to our local Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Facebook page ,where you can see all the love and support from the local community.
facebook.com/272520402772419/posts/3991224427568646/
Thanks again so much for all the advice in your videos and I look forward to seeing more from you in 2021..
Give us a shout out if you can because you have touched the lives of communities that need your kind of expertise and content to become more sustainable in the future....
Love , peace and light ❤✌🏾🙏🏽
Shalom. ....
I love this! Great idea!
Hope it gives you a few ideas to have a crack at Kristal 👍
Cheers.
I love your projects, Rob! Fascinating stuff as always.
Thanks Patrick.
Have a great one sir.
GRATITUDE 💥🐟💥
Nice simple system...cheers from the Clarence valley...
Thanks Joe.
Have a great one. 👍
Hi Rob. You probably know already .. But its good practise to wrap tgw ptfe (Teflon) tape in tge same clockwise direction of the thread so tge product self- tightens and seals properly ?
Brill videos mate !!
Very nice Rob! Im getting back into AP next year, thanks !!
No problem Mate. Hope it helped you with a few ideas.
Cheers mate.
Great job Rob bravo!
Thanks mate. 👍
Well done !
Thanks :)
You make it look easy.
Because it is mate 👍
Once you've had some practice that is 😉
As Swissy dreaming of a life in Australia with a food garden you're an inspiration. oh and because of you I purchased a smoovie. ;)
:D Are you happy with the smoovie?
Thanks & all the best.
Rob.
Rob, very happy with the smoovie. I have a LG G4 which records in 4K.
Nice one. 👍 I haven't done much with mine lately but have it in the car in case I need it while out & about.
Cheers.
Thanks excellent as usual.....
Thanks Alan.
Cheers mate & have a top one.
Really appreciate your efforts and regarding the blocking of drilled holes it may suit having the drilled holes higher than the lowest level leaving a small water bed level if not suited than th I'm sure you considered the use of slits doing away with drilled holes. something I'm considering including is the cut off system for the pump for when the bed reaches its height max. It has to be safe and so I'm working on a remotely placed 12VDC relay which contacts will provide 240Vac interruption in fact it may have to be a timer associated with it, so digital relay comes into mind. The added idea I like which I perceive would prevent insect ingress is to use a water trap like we have in sinks.Thank you again for your efforts.
Hope your build went well Michael.
I don't know if this helps at all but I've seen a load of folks just run with timers for the grow beds. They have a small hole drilled in the base of the standpipe to allow the bed to drain while the pump is off.
Cheers.
When you put Teflon tape on threads always go the same direction as the thread. (the direction you'll be screwing on what ever it is) That way the Teflon won't ever ball up or unwrap, as you screw your piece on. Helps prevent leaks in a big way. Thanks for another awesome video!
Thanks Joseph. Have had that pointed out a few times now ;) Still sealed so no drama there. 👍
Cheers & have a top one.
My inner plumber cringed a bit to see you put the teflon tape on in the wrong direction and then you used the channel lock pliers wrong too. Not trying to nit pick but its something i learned doing plumbing early on. Thanks for the videos Rob!
Is one of those thing I suppose, never had any one teach me how to use them. I thought I'd put the tape on the right way but will have go back & check as someone else pointed that pout as well :D ;)
Cheers.
cheers mate 😃
No problem Mr Benno.
Cheers mate.
Looks great :) Hope you get lots of good food from it :)
Thanks mate. Cheers.
Hi just want to say when putting on thread tape,go clockwise So the tape will tighten as u do it up
👍Thanks.
Hi Rob,maybe a tip maybe not but with the ends of any solid pipes having water come out of them i like to heat up the end of the pipe with a heat gun then use something small and round to create a little drip edge so the water doesn't back flow on underside of the pipes.
Thanks for that Matthew. I can see where this could of helped in a few spots in my systems over the years.
Cheers mate.
EXCELLENT INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!! I shall be viewing most of your videos in the near future prior to setting up my own aquaponics. Could you give me a quick run down of what grows the best in this type of garden??
Hi David. I've found that greens (salad & brassicas) absolutely love aquaponics & all the nitrate. I think you can pretty much well grow any plant in there with some needing a bit more attention like the fruiting plants. Many folks recommend supplementing the potassium if you want to grow things like tomatoes, eggplants & cucurbits.
Hope that helps some mate & have fun setting up the system.
Rob!!!! Thank you for EVERYTHING!!!! I'm just starting out and you alone got me up and going with my makeshift designs.😂 Mahalo from Maui! Kam🤙🤙🤙🤙
Nice one mate. Hope the build goes smoothly. 😁😁👍
I'm doing this!
Hope it works out well for you Bill.
Cheers mate.
i had an idea for a siphon, using the valve from a toilet and a float joined by a nailon piece, when the water goes up, it opens the valve, hope this is usefull for someone.
Some of the first barrelponic systems used them in a header tank. 👍👍
Cheers Sergio.
Cheers
Back at ya Daniel 👍👍
It would've been nice of you to explain how they would all be drained by 1 siphon
All you need to do is look at the way the drains are set up. As they share a communal drain the water level in all tree beds will drain at the same time.
looking good as always Rob ... Those uni-seals look like they make things much easier ... I will have to order some, as you can't get them here in Thailand ..
Cheers mate 👍
Have sent a few over to Thailand as the freight was a bit cheaper from here than elsewhere if you'd like me to give you a quote.
Have a great one.
Rob Bob's Backyard Farming thanks buddy... I could do with 4x 3" you can pm me the quote if you want..
Shall take a few down to the post office this afternoon & will PM you later.
Cheers mate.
Hi super
Hi Rob wanting to start some grow beds and fish tank. Could you use an old chest freezer as it would be a reasonable size, hold water and would also be insulated plus it would look quite neat from day 1 as you would not have to cover with timber or some other material. Also repurpose old non working freezer to save going into landfill. Regards Phil
I know a few folks that have used them Phil. 👍 A mate used them as deepwater beds in his cafe set up.
There was a guy on the Backyard Aquaponics forum that used a running industrial style chest freezer to run trout all year round. It also helped that he was a fridgy & knew how to tweak it. 😉
Hope that helps some.
You should wind your plumbing tape the same direction as your fitting screws on.
🤣 I've had SO MANY comments about that. 😉👍
LOL. You can't get away with anything with all of us watching!😂
Hope you get this message...what is the smallest and sustainable aquaponic system you can build...I hear noting smaller than 800L witch is huge for me of fish tank capacity...any any any suggestions?
Why did you not add the blue rock around the water pipes in the first two beds, as they also work as drains when the siphon in the third bed kicks in.
But, at least we saw what water looks like flowing out of a pipe...
That is coming from the last bed which has the siphon. 👍
Would the siphon initiate faster (or more reliably?) if you had a small 90deg upturn on the exit pipe?
Might help a little but I generally don't add them now unless I want to direct the water downwards.
Cheers.
You're the coolest guy I've ever seen on RUclips. You've got the greatest shirts I've ever seen. Where do I get those?
:D thanks, I think.
I get them from Root & Ramble..
rootnramble.com/
If you order one let them know where you saw them.
Cheers & all the best.
Rob.
Hi Rob,
Just got back to this video as I am considering (yes, already...) to expand my single IBC setup. I like the idea of the barrels in this project of yours, it not only brings a bit of colour to a garden LOL but it offers quite a good growing surface. I have two questions for you at that stage:
- how many liters of clay per barrel? more or less
- why having the barrel connection sitting under the barrels? Doesn't this create a place for stagnant water ie: anaerobic zone? I am not sure to wrap my head properly around this.
As usual I appreciate and do value a lot your experience and your videos, please, keep them coming.
Cheers
Hey Jason. Did you end up setting up a system like this?
Cheers.
beatiful iam from indonesia
Cheers mate.
Hi Rob, I have a top and a bottom IBC tote as grow beds. Do you recommend connecting them together via the bottom IBC drain valve and have the siphon on the other grow bed or should I just run the siphon independently?
Sorry it took so long to respond.
I'd probably plumb them up separately. Will give you more flexibility down the line if you decide to change the layout of the system.
Hope the build went well.
Is there an advantage of having the 'link' pipes between the beds so tall (looks about 20/25cm)? If that pipe was only a few cm from the bottom of the non-siphon bed would it not still work the same? I'm thinking less space lost and less chance for roots to clog?
I left them taller just in case roots became an issue & blocked sections of the pipe. 👍
Wouldn't be an issue with quick growing crops but thought it worth while to include.
Cheers.
I wish I had more thumbs...
How long does it take from beginning to harvest on Ginger because I’ve been growing ginger in my bedroom
Just an fyi, you are putting the thread tape on backwards. You want to put it on in the direction that you will be screwing the fitting on, otherwise it will push the tape out of the threads.
More than a few folks have pointed that out. ;)
Thanks for information Mr.Bob. where do you buy a black valve in your video? :)
Hi Phi.
The black fitting that went through the base of the grow bed is called a bulkhead fitting or water tank fitting. We can purchase them from plumbing & hardware stores over here.
Sorry it took a while to get mat to you.
Cheers,
Rob.
Heh, dry run, I mean wet run.
do you have a filter between the water being pumped into the grow bed and the fish tank? to filter out the heavy waste?
Certainly do Rajiv. You can see the complete layout of the system here.
ruclips.net/video/raLv4RAUte8/видео.html
There are some other clips in that playlist looking at how to put together small systems & other components for your system.
Hope that helps & have a top one mate.
Rob.
Hello! Big fan of your videos. You do great work. I looked int he comments below, and didn't see specifics on the kind of ginger you're growing nor quite hear what you called it.
I'm also looking to grow some ginger in the summers here (NW USA).
Can you share specifics on the ginger species you're planning?
Or maybe what kinds you've found grow best in the hydroton clay pellets?
Hey Chris. I tried the "Chinese keys" which is also known as "Finger root ginger".
The everyday ginger (zingiber officinale) does really well in there as does every other variety we've tried including turmeric.
The only failure I've had was this finger root. 😕
Hope that helps.
Thank you for the siphons ideas i have my fish pond however, i have some problem how to do it and that is my pond is below the hill also i dont have power in my village please give me some ideas on one that you dont need power to power your siphones. Kema Taina Vegala from Papua New Guinea
A solar powered pump would be about your best bet I think. Might be hard to find locally though.
Manually moving the water into a reservoir that sits above the grow beds & have it trickle down slowly through the day might be one solution but it would require a fair bit of manual effort.
Hi rob, can you please tell me is that burring tool a burning tool or a different tool that you use for burning? Thanks
Hi Nicole. The tool I used is called a deburring tool. They're basically a curved blade that is used to cut off the unwanted burs left behind. They are fairly cheap & available from most hardware stores.
Hope that helps you out some.
Rob.
awesome, one question...drains have the same level of sifon?
I found the first bed had a slightly higher water level than the last. That has to do with the final bed holding the siphon lowering to the "burp" level before the fist could fully drain. The difference in water level was about 25mm or 1".
HTH some Cesar. 👍
having a hard time with ginger. have some advice that may help? thanks for this video
Hi Bruce. I just saw your other comment & replied. 👍
Cheers mate.
Rob... I want to know about pressure and weight, is that piping connection bellow those bed is strong enough to hold the whole pressure and weight from water, hydroton, and many things above it ?
The only real weight was that of the water as the media is excluded by the screens on the drain pipe. I've had no issues with the fitting as up to now but if you were concerned you could always place a bracket of sorts under it to hold it in place.
Cheers.
Ive been adding a small nylon tube to the bell of the syphon to break syphon on my systems. i notice you dont use them and your system takes several tries to break syphon. Is this wanted, not wanted, or does not matter?
From what I've seen it's not a big issue.
Having the "snorkel" hose definitely helps the siphon to break better if the flow rate is high. If it's too high with the ones I build they won't break as well.
HTH some. 👍
Any suggestions for growing in arid desert for preventing evaporation. I"m in Arizona in the US and we get 110+F (34+C?) temps for a month at a time.
Shade cover over the beds will help. Also keeping the media beds planted out with plants will also help to shade the rock & help to reduce evaporation a bit.
hi Rob bobs, about the uniseal where I can get that, do you have any link so rhat I can order it please.
Hi Mate. If you're in Australia you can get them from me off the website.
bitsouttheback.com/uniseals/
I also have them listed here for folks overseas,
www.amazon.com/shop/bnbob01
Hope that helps some mate & sorry for taking a while to respond.
Cheers. 🙂
Ey Rob, top video! Wondering how the displacement of solids / waste / nutrients goes using this method. Is there a cascade effect from the first to last growbed?
The nutrients wouldn't be an issue with these barrels as the growing space can only fit a limited amount of plants.
If it was four or five fully planted out 1 x 3m beds that were hooked up you may find some issues of nutrient depletion. As to how much that would depend on the nutrient level of the water.
Cheers Steve.
Ahh yeah.. Seems logical. I suppose directing a dedicated flow into each individual bed would minimize this. Thanks for the reply mate!
👍
👍👍
Hi would this work on a 3 bed ibc system with tank and sump? Or would that be too large of a grow bed?
It would work on a larger scale. You might need to set up the bell in an independent barrel to one side (so it can handle a greater flow) like I showed in this video,
ruclips.net/video/pKwq_PRCeQw/видео.html
Hoppe that gives you a few ideas.
Cheers Rosie. 👍👍
Actually if you have 20, I will use them for the commercial Aquaponics project here in Bangkok, , if not I will just use them on my small home system ... Cheers buddy
I forgot to take them down to the PO sorry mate. Will run down in the morning & get back to you with an Idea on the cost then. Cheers mate.
Thanks..
Hi sir, does your bell siphon found at the end of you filtration system I mean the grow bed?then goes through the fish tank...
Btw just found your channel earlier
Hi Vlad. Sorry it took a while to get back to you.
The water leaves the bell siphon then flows into the sump tank. From there the water flow was split with most going to the fish tanks & the rest to the separate grow beds.
You can see how the system is laid out in this video here, ruclips.net/video/raLv4RAUte8/видео.html
Hope that helps some.
where do you buy your clay? i can't find a cheap place. everywhere i go it would cost hundreds of dollars to fill one growbed. and what are those through hulls you are using?
I was lucky enough to buy a load while we had a good exchange rate but it still cost us just under AUD$200 to fill a single IBC grow bed.
I also picked up a load second hand I found posted on a local Facebook aquaponics group.
Volcanic rock/scoria & expanded shale are also light wight mediums you can use that cost a lot less. Rock that contains no carbonates is also a good option. Just a bit heavier to work with.
Hope that helps some CF. 👍
Hi,I have a general question on hydroponics....Why use siphon at all??You just need a drain to not over flood right??So why not just put a drain hole at the level you need??
Draining the bed also allows for air to reach the roots of the plants & the bacteria colonies set up in the media that convert the fish waste into plant available nitrates. 👍
HTH Mahesh.
Have a top one.
Aquaponics is not hydroponics . Lulz
That's pretty smart. Three tubs one syphon.
Cheers 👍
for anyone concerned about leaks: TOP FITTING FOR BULK HEAD
THEN RUBBER WASHER
THEN SHROUD
THEN RUBBER WASHER
THEN BUCKET
THEN BULKHEAD NUT
there's no point in having a washer on the outside of the bucket as that doesn't create a proper seal
best wishes :)
Must say that I don't have leaks doing it this way in any of the beds but do now know the way you pointed out to be the right way to do it.
Cheers.
Rob Bob's Backyard Farming I'm glad it's working out! Thanks for the great vids :)
So just to make sure I've got how this works: water flows into one barrel, flows out through the bottom to the two other barrels, and then the bell siphon activates in the third barrel and drains all three. Is this correct?
yes
Thant's right mate. 👍
maybe a silly question, but will the external cyphon work on a single large bed with multiple drains?
It should work fine Levi. The multiple drains leading into the siphon should help with drainage times I would think.
Would like to know how you get on if you have a crack at one.
Cheers,
Rob.
Hi Bob . Please add a video of single bell siphon for two grow bed running (at same time ) . And where to buy uni seal and the already cut/hole pipes . thanks . Lynn
Hi Lynn. This is the clip that shows how I set up 3 beds to run from one Bell Siphon. 👍 All you need to do is onl join 2 beds & have the siphon in one.
I'f you're in Australia you can buy the Uniseals from me.
bitsouttheback.com/uniseals/
If you're not let me know where & I'll see if there's someone I could recommend.
Hope that helps
@@RobsAquaponics wouldn't you need a bigger siphon for multiple growbeds?
Like
i have decided to do this also, but i struck a bit of a problem , every single uniseal leaks, im thinking my holesaw may be a smidgen too big . so i silasticed them but still some leaks
Have you tried wrapping the uniseals with Teflon tape Dave? I wrap it around the outside of the seal that goes through the tanks wall & find the thicker pink tape works well.
Hope that helps some mate.
Just found your channel. I'm in the process of setting up a very small in-house system for growing cool-weather plants over the winter. I notice that there are some people who advocate putting the plants directly into the clay pellets and others who seed the plants into small pots which hold vermiculite or coconut coir fiber and then those pots go into the clay pellets. Is one method better than the other, or doesn't it matter?
Thanks for these tutorials! Really appreciate it.
I think growing straight into the beds is the best way to go Kalinysta. 👍
Hope the build goes smoothly for you.
Thanks for the reply!
Got another question. Since I'm going to be raising plants from seeds, should I plant them in dirt pots first and then transplant them into the grow beds when they've got sufficient roots? I can't imagine planting the seeds directly into the grow beds. Thanks for your help!
I sow some of the larger seeds directly into the grow beds but prefer to start off the majority in soil. Just need to wash excess soil off the roots in a small container of water before adding them into the bed. 👍 I thought I had a clip showing it but I must of included it in a longer update. Will look at shooting a quick one soon.
Cheers.
Thank you again for your reply. Much appreciated! Keep making videos! :)
Just want to know if in this system the water pump is running through out?
The water is flowing at all times to all beds & fish tank. 👍 This is a look at how our current system is plumbed up if it helps any Johnson,

Hope that helps some.
Just a small Query.. what should be the height of siphon inside the tank w.r.t the inlet pipe
The height of the standpipe should be about 20-25mm/¾-1" below the top surface of the grow media in the beds Saibal. 👍The inlet pipes can be lower or higher than that as it's the standpipe in the siphon that will set the water height.
I hope that helps some.
