Instead of doing 1/2 seam for the sides, I did a French seam so theres no open edges inside the bag. Got the idea from another bag pattern and it worked great here too. On the box corner I used a small piece of single binding to cover that edge. You do great videos. This was very helpful. Thanks!!!
What great suggestions, Nancy! We’re so glad you enjoyed this tutorial! -Michelle
I really appreciate how thorough you are Jen about cutting and placement of each piece of fabric. This is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle only the end result is actually something you can use! Can’t wait to make one of these for a dear friend 💕
Glad it was helpful! We enjoy hearing these comments from our customers, as that is our number one goal. To make any person a successful quilter. - Yajaira
I like that Jen takes the extra time to show EACH step and doesn't rush through it. Really cute bag!
Thank you Lynn! We're so glad you enjoy the tutorials! Jen likes to spend the time so she can help you be as successful as possible, so we're happy to hear you find it helpful! Let us know what other projects you'd like to see. - Morgan
I love the tote bag! The tutorial is a bit long, but informative. Thank you very much, Jen! And I see that you take the time to answer each and every comment! Wow! that is dedication, I love it! Just thank you again for caring so much about what you do!
Thank you for watching, Lise! We appreciate each and every member of the Shabby Fabrics family! - Sophie
This was great! I love the binding tip, WOW! I also love how you made the straps, very clever and sturdy (I kept wondering why there were no finished edges, then it all came together.) Many thanks, I'm looking forward to making this for myself and as a gift to my "quilt worthy" family and friends. :)
So glad you liked it! This is such a fun project, and such a great gift for those who are "quilt worthy" (I'm using that from now on - haha). - Morgan
This is my very first big project and I did it with Malibu Barbie fabric and I can’t believe how cute it turned out 😂💜
That sounds amazing! We'd love to see you photos some time :) -Michelle
Hi I just finished my bag, I made it a little different. I made in to my , added a matching pocket outside, lining where sewing does not show and put a body strap on it. I love how it came out, used pink Riley Black strips. I love watching your video's, I have learned so much, thanks.
We're so happy you enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks so much for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
glad to see this tutorial - I had bought the kit - and wanted to see the visual "how to sew this together " as reading the instructions made me crazy trying to figure what it was saying 😃
We're so glad this tutorial was helpful! We love the June Tailor projects and sometimes a video tutorial is just the extra help you need to get it done! Hope you enjoy the bag! We'd love to see pictures. - Morgan
Agree. Package directions were a bit fuzzy in several areas. Video answered all my questions! Thanks
Cute Bag Jennifer! You might want to sew the top of strap in a box w/x stitch when you lift it up for your final stitching, for this will give strength to the strap.
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! Happy Quilting! -Kyla
I prefer the diagonal joining of the binding, but whether you use the straight join like Jen did or the diagonal join it looks much nicer if you plan ahead and get the join to fall on the side preferably right on the side seam instead of center back (which on me is center front half the time! LOL!) 💜🌞🌵
A little pre-planning really does go a long way! - Morgan
Thank you so very much! I am making this right now and would be lost without the video.
We're glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
Love watching you. You are so detailed and love that you clip all your threads
Thank you very much! We're glad you enjoyed this tutorial! 💖 -Michelle
Wonderful tutorial. You expanded the meager directions that come with the tote. I enjoyed making mine along with you with the video by my side!😊
We're so happy you enjoyed this fun tutorial. Thank you very much for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Deb did yours match up onto each line when I sewn my first two pieces then folded it over it seemed to be short and not upto the line
Continuous Binding:: this has got to be the best tutorial for creating this; forget the 'binding' tool....or all that measuring...I will do mine this way from now on!
The continuous batting is one of our favorite things! So glad you like it too! - Morgan
could finish the seam edges before stitching and that would finish the raw edge better - serger...or overcast stitch... and i would make the binding seam end up behind the handles :)
Those are great suggestions, thank you for sharing them! - Morgan
This was wonderful, I learned a couple new things and the directions are were so easy to understand. Thank you so much. I am not good with electronics but this was easy for me!!!!
We're glad you've enjoyed this tutorial. Thank you for watching! 💖 -Michelle
I used quarter in zipper tape I had on hand and worked like a charm. Thanks for idea
Great idea! Thank you for sharing! - Sophie
Really love the colors of the bag! Nice spring/summer-like colors in the jelly roll and great choice for the bag. The lining is very pretty also. Another great bag tutorial, Jen! Thanks so much for all your comprehensive tutorials. This video is just another reason why I became a subscriber long ago - you have such nice videos. Kudos to you, your camera person, video editor, your staff, and all those behind the scenes also! Oh!!! And thank you for the Shabby Fabrics pen included in my last fabric order. A very nice surprise. :-)
Thank you so very much for your kind comment, Dori! We love to hear how much you enjoy the videos. We hope you have so much fun with your project and are glad you enjoyed the pen. Let us know if you have any questions or want to see any specific projects or tutorials. We love to hear from you.
Love the June Taylor preprinted batting !!! I've made the cat and dog mats already :) This looks like a fun project as well. I need a tote to carry stuff . Too hard to go room to room with things in my hands....yup...this will do nicely!
The June Tailor projects are just the best! We LOVE those cat and dog mats! Great choice. We agree that totes are a must-have, even around the house. They're especially great for carrying around hand embroidery projects or craft supplies from room to room. Let us know how your tote turns out! - Morgan
Fabulous demonstration I feel I’m learning so much from you Jenny thank you :)
Hi Trudy! Thank you for watching! Stay safe and happy sewing! ~Leah
This is an excellent tutorial. I would have never been able to make this bag from the directions provided with the pattern. June Taylor's instructions were terrible. I thought for the price the directions should be much more visual. The print was so small I could hardly read it with my glasses on. I did add some Pellon SF101 to the lining fabric. Next time I make this I will use muslin on the back of the batting and make a separate lining so as not to have the exposed seams. Thank you again for your video.
Glad we could inspire you! -Michelle
Thanks for a great tutorial! Easy to understand instructions.
You're welcome! We are happy to hear you enjoy our tutorial! -Kyla
@@ShabbyFabrics I can't wait to try a tote, either this one or the Sophie tote.

I love the way this bag goes together! I can't wait to try one. Great fabric!
Isn't it such great construction?! June Tailor's projects are the best quality! And this Lori Holt fabric is some of the cutest. We thought it made the perfect summer tote!
What a beautiful tote bag. Love the colors and the size. The binding is a nice finish. I have used that method on quilting projects. I think I need that roll of fabric.
Thank you so much for watching! It's such a fun collection and we just love the simplicity of this method for making a bag! This fabric is a definite must-have for us! ;) - Morgan
This is a great tutorial jenn. Thanks so much for the chance to win this kit. I really want to make one.
So glad you like the tutorial, and thank you for watching! The giveaway is actually to win the completed tote that Jen made here in the video! Good luck to you!! It's such a cute bag! - Morgan
I love my Bernina for that reason and tons more. Love the tote!! Thanks for posting it.
Bernina's are simply the best!
Could one use a glue stick or Elmer's glue to stick the fabric on the handle to the batting then iron the folded over fabric? I use glue stick often because you and lift and adjust the fabric before you iron it. I love how you take time to explain every detail. Thank you!!❤
Yes, you should be able to use your trusty glue stick as a basting to attach your batting to your fabrics. We're so glad you enjoy this fun tutorial! -Michelle
love this tote you always give good instructions i love your videos. Keep doing this great job, may God continue blessing you always

Beautiful creative Hand bag. Easy and very interesting. Easy to follow watching you step by step. Tempted to make it soon. I would love to see a zipper pocket in that type of a tote bag. How about showing how to make baby girl blanket ! We have 2 weeks old new grand daughter. I am looking for one to sew. Thank you for taking so much time to show us a very beautiful Tote Bag.
So glad you like the project! It really is so much fun and so simple with June Tailor's pre-printed batting and her easy-to-follow pattern! We love that it works for precuts, too, because it makes it a great option for scraps or a gorgeous new collection.

.I would have used another drop in lining with added pockets like zipper pockets and a recessed zipper on top. That would make it a more useful bag as well as beautiful.
That would be a great addition to this bag! - Morgan
Estou apaixonada por essa bolsa.
Thank you! Merry Christmas! 🎄~Leah
I had followed the pattern to do the bag and binding but my brain just could not figure out the straps!! So a big thankyou from me!!!

Thanks for cute bags . Happy New Year !
Thank you for watching! Happy New Year! - Sophie
OK, note to self "watch the tutorial at the beginning" LOL I'm right into it !
Lol. We get into it, too, right away!
On the handles, when ironing without the steam-a-seam, use a Taylor's clapper to hold that fold until it's cool... usually the time it takes to iron the next section you can slide the clapper over. Don't have a clapper? Just use any scrap of unpainted wood. Mine is partical board and it works great. 💜🌞🌵
That's a great tip, Suzi, thank you so much for sharing that with us! - Morgan
I have made one before and i have one more kit to make, I want to see if I can add a zipper and pockets from the inside. I don't know how to go about it but I will wing it. Your video was great!!

Such a lovely bag. I love your video.
Thank you so much! We sure do appreciate you watching. - Morgan
Love your videos. Thank you for taking the time to film them for us. On a video posted August 28 2018 you had a video called How to Make Magic Binding. In it ( filmed with Tammy doing the demo) it was said to make sure there was a quarter inch gap between the two ends when you fold back the fabric and press. Then sew across for the diagonal joining of the two ends. This video shows butting the two ends together before pressing. Does it work both ways? I have tried the one with the quarter inch gap and it did work.
In the Magic binding method. .she left the 1/4 gap. Sewd on the diagonal. .Today she made a straight line seam!

When you stitched around the perimeter of the bag before piecing, did you stitch on the solid line or the broken line. I have this kit and the directions are not clear. Thank you for enabling me to complete this bag.
Great question Karen! When you stitch around the outside at the beginning, you'll be sewing on the solid line. Let us know what other questions you have while you make this! - Morgan

This would making and creating quilts easier with preprinted batting. But I bet that the preprinted batting is expensive.
That is very true, it would be perfect for any level of quilting! -Kyla
Wish you showed inside the bag to see those raw seams. Why would June Tailor not suggest French seams or a lining. The lining on the patchwork could then act as a interlining.
Like the bag but will change it to do the above so you can't see the open seam. What do you think?
Yes, I too would have liked see the inside of the bag. I also don't care for the way the binding was finished. I prefer the diagonal method so that there is less bulk of seam. While I love the outside look of this bag I think some of the finishes need changed.
Agree! The open seam inside is less professional looking, however, it’s a great project...especially for a beginner
I think serging the seams will take care of the raw edges. Binding the seams with an extra strip would look extra nice.
I think the comment about binding referred to how you made the overall lenght(diagonal v straight). I wouldn’t want to bind th seams as there is a lot of fabric but could be a possibility to serge but think adding a lining or french seam is a more preferable solution to a finish I think was ill thought by June Tailor and her team
However, I do love the overall look of this bag
Ruth, at 2:50 Jen discusses the lining fabric or are you talking about an additional lining? Sending lots of love 💜 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵.
muito lindo e perfeito obrigada por partilhar
Obrigado por assistir. Estamos tão felizes que você goste. - Morgan
Just ordered a hot ruler!!👍🏻 the tape might help on the back of the batting to hold it from the beginning??
Woo! Hope you enjoy it! That is a great idea! - Yajaira
...and wondering why you didn't line the bag, so that the raw seams would not be visible/finished on the inside?
Great question. In this video we just followed the pattern exactly. You could certainly line the bag if you prefer that look. - Morgan
Can't find your hot ruler! Draw a line on a filefolder. The filefolder will take the heat until you can do a clean up and find your hot ruler! 💜🌞🌵
Haha. Sewing rooms never get so messy you lose notions! haha. Just kidding of course, we know how hectic that sewing room can get! Great tip to use the file folder until you tidy up and find the Hot Ruler!
The bag itself is lovely, but the handles seem to be the hardest part to make, can’t help but think I’d make different, easier handles!
So glad you like the bag! The handles are probably the hardest part, but still achievable by anyone! Of course, customizing the bag to put your own spin on it is always an option (and we'd love to see what you come up with)! - Morgan
Hi there, I have a question. When you trim the edges is there a reason why you have the lining side up? or it’s your preference. Hope to hear from you. By the way I love the pattern of that tote bag. I sure would love to make some. Thanks for sharing the video❤️

Awesome binding finishing technique!
Thank you! It's such a quick, easy way to do it! - Morgan
Could one sew a French seam on the side seam and use bias tape on the box seam?
You can definitely use bias tape on the box seams if you'd like. If you choose to sew a french seam for the sides, you'll want to be careful as you'll need to factor in the batting thickness and you may want to choose to not completely trim your fabrics (Like Jen does at timestamp 10:15) to allow for the extra length needed to create one. Hope this makes sense :) -Michelle
heat set the wonder tape. also, is the bag lined ?
We didn't add a lining to this simply because we followed the instructions from June Tailor directly. But, it would be nice to add a lining! - Morgan

In the midst of making this bag. Super confused about the straps. If the straps need to be made then why the canvas straps? Are those just optional if you prefer not to make the batted/fabric straps?
Thank you for watching! For the straps the canvas strapping is covered with fabric, then stitched to the top of the batting straps. This adds durability as well as a unique design element. Happy New Year! ~Leah

Getting ready to make this and have a few questions… do you put in a machine knot in at the end of each strip? If I starch the strips before won’t they shrink and leave me with too little width to match up with the preprinted lines?
Hi Renee- We typically find that using a spray (like Magic Sizing) prior to ironing doesn't shrink our fabric, but if that is your concern, you may want to test it on a swatch of the fabric you plan on using, prior to committing to it. We do not put machine knots in at the end of each strip after we sew- we do backstitch a bit. Regarding the pre-printed lines- those lines are just placement guides, so it's okay if your fabric doesn't line up 100%. As long as you're sewing with a quarter-inch seam allowance, your strips should be fine. Hope this makes sense! 💖 -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics thank you!!!
Happy to help 💖-Michelle
