There is a spot in Tavira in front of the river where you can sit at an Irish restaurant and enjoy a relaxing sunny afternoon with a glass of wine. This place was so relaxing that we are now enjoying our third month in the eastern Algarve. We are now in Olhao and loving the place... .even during a covid lockdown in January! Thanks for your informative videos!
You're right Hank, I'll have to put the Irish in my next video about Tavira. I've spent many a long evening on those seats next to the river. This video was a bit dry, tons more juicy content coming soon.
Another awesome and informative video Nick! 👍 Looking to move from central Portugal down to Tavira area for the winter and this was a great intro to the area. Good things! Obrigado
I can still remember the time in 1976, when I was in Tavira on a family holiday, we ate at an all you can eat churrasco, all for the price of 76 escudos(.40 euro). We used to camp at Praia Verde, now its all built up. Its still a public beach, but it is not the same. How times have changed.
If you like Indian food, Tavira is the place. In a town of fewer than 20,000 souls there were, at last count, three Indian restaurants. All of them seem to be run by Sikhs. They must exist for the Brits because in general most Portuguese do not appreciate Indian food. They say it is too spicy.
@Justin Case Thanks for the info. I knew about the Indian connection of course. After all even our Prime Minister has a connection to India. I love Indian food, maybe that love coming only second to Mexican food. Give me spicy any time. Up in the north (distrito de Vila Real) Indian food never made it. People tried in Vila Real twice and had to close. I of course didn't come to Portugal to eat Indian food but after thirty years of vitela assada, batata frita e arroz, e couves I will drive any distance to eat something more exotic. I drive for an hour up to Ourense, for example, just to eat Mexican food. I even put mango chutney or Salsa picante on almost everything I eat and I don't have an ulcer. At least not yet. What was curious for me in Tavira is how the Sikhs controlled the restaurants. Even in Tomar, when I stopped at a kebab place there were at least five turban wearing Sikhs behind the counter. I never imagined I would find Sikhs selling kebab in Tomar.
Hey Justin. Naturally some people who live here, or who are thinking about coming over enjoy a bit of variety. We love the local Portuguese food but sometimes expats list after other tastes too. I'm so happy Gourmet Hamburgers eventually made it to the Algarve, although I still eat regular Portuguese food and love it.
Tavira is one of my favorite towns in the Algarve. In fact it is the only town there where we have visited and stayed in on several occasions. I have never really been that interested in the region west of Faro other than a trip to Silves and Sagres some years ago when I first arrived in Portugal. Once the pandemic slows down a bit I want to revisit these places. We had been spending our end of year holidays in Tavira for about five years straight until the pandemic hit. We would rent apartments and stay for a very low price much cheaper than a hotel, especially when you are two families. Up north in Chaves the winter can be quite cold with average highs around 8º while in Tavira they are around 18º. Tourists walk around in shorts and tshirts at the end of December. Not locals of course because for them it is very cold. We really like Tavira because it is not infested with tourists, still has a beautiful traditional architecture, and has relatively low prices for restaurants compared to other places in the Algarve. Inland from Tavira, following the Gilão river, the river valley is lined with orange groves. Very nice.
Hi Surabela, you're welcome, just go to www.algarveaddicts.com and subscribe to my email list and you'll get one. Make sure you choose "relocate" not holiday.

Thank you for covering Tavira! When you do a segment on Real Estate can you include rentals as well? Tavira looks like a quiet town in general. I am more interested in whether a town has culture such as the arts, museums, yoga, good restaurants or cafe's, movies, theater, dance schools etc. I don't expect you to have that information but just sharing some of my needs.
Hi Caren, it's good to slot that info into my "things to do" section. I think in a few months I could do an hour long video on each town :) Regarding rentals, I'm calling a couple of friends today who do long term rentals, so I'll slot that into the real estate or make a separate video about it.
I bought a small house in Tavira in 2019 for winter stays, not visited since March 2020. There are many artists and galleries, Artesia Galleria particularly, some cafes with live music and in summer musical performances in the Republic square by the Roman bridge. A cineplex cinema in the Grand Plaza mall for Live at the Met, pre Covid and international films. There is a rich and diverse cultural life there, including UK, Swedish, Norwegian and Canadian ex pats who are now residents. When travel is easier, twice a year visits for winter escape and extension of summer months in September and October.

How about relocating to Tavira, opening a minute activity of some sort (wine/tapas maybe) and living there but not driving. No car. Where do you suggest I should look? Tavira where? Heheh, yes Picanha is wonderful, just be careful when you go to "Rodízios" here (basically all you can eat Brazilian meat). You won't walk for a week afterwards!
Sorry, yup Portimão is on the list, hopefully I will have covered the whole Algarve by the end of the year and then I can head up to other towns further north.
Nick we would love if you could do a video on the Algarve Real estate market. If you could focus on towns closer to the Spanish border, that would be great. Love your videos and your daughter is beautiful. We have been to Lagos and loved it but are looking to be near the water more towards the Spanish border. Thank you.
I was just asked to respond to an inquiry about Olhao, and asked to provide background, "warts and all." First, only being here for 4 months does not give me much credibility in terms of knowing the "real" Olhao but my wife and I bought a place here after only 6 days of a January month long visit. Even then, the weather was wonderful compared to Sweden but we have been to many places in Portugal and explored the Algarve a bit and nothing was as attractive as this place for us. We like that Olhao is smaller in scale and super walkable for everything we need. Our sense is that is is more of a "regular" place with more local people here than in other Algarve locations. Equity is one significant issue. With emerging development on the Ria Formosa, the contrast between the local olhao population with many not having much in terms of income with new condos on the shoreline means there are some security issues that reflect that equity imbalance. This long so I'll stop but I can say overall, we would not wish to be anywhere else! Thanks to Nick for opening this conversation.
Hank, great to hear from you again and thanks for sharing about Olhão. I want to come over and make a video about Olhão soon, hopefully I can do a mini interview with you?
I just subscribed yesterday. Love your vlog, especially the historical notes. My wife and I are considering relocating to Portugal when we retire in 10 years (we currently live near, Portland, Oregon, USA). Anything in general you recommend we be working toward in the meantime?
Thx Nick! Great video! I actually have my eye on a property in Cabanas. I’m looking for a decent yielding investment property that I can stay at occasionally for now. And of course I’m wondering if the timing is right considering COVID. Perhaps values may drop a bit. So I’ll be very interested in that real estate video that you’ll be doing. Curious, where is the closest place to go surfing at near Tavira and Cabanas?
Hi there, mmm the pressure is ON for the real estate video :) There is surf in Tavira, but it only works when the levante (or sueste) blows (it's a south easterly which brings short period swell up from Gibraltar). Tavira doesn't work that well with the normal Atlantic storm swell that marches down the west coast.
Hello Nick, thank you for your videos thet are very informative. Can you please make a video on your experiences with the Healthcare systems in Portugal. Can you also please give us a tour of some of the health care facilities.

I'm looking to relocate to the Algarve and buy a small self sustainable, off grid farm with the opportunity to host wellness retreats. I'm flying out for a holiday soon and would be interested in viewing some properties. What area would you recommend for best value but access to amenities and what realtors do you recommend?

Hi Nick...thanks for another great video...would be great if you could do one on the infrastructure of utilities in the Algarve...for example in North America we take it for granted that we have a natural gas line connected to our home for heat and cooking, etc. but it seems to be a rare thing in Portugal and people have to have propane bottles delivered, etc. and very small hot water tanks usually mounted in a kitchen cabinet. Do you have garbage trucks pick up from your home or do you have to take it yourself to a depot?..Just curious what towns in the Algarve would have the most modern amenities, and how you personally cope with some of these issues...Cheers
Thanks for watching Shawn. I'm not super clued up on gas but I will keep it in mind for the future. Actually, I'll discuss it on our Facebook group (Algarve Addicts). Regarding garbage, there are central bins that are cleared by a truck and taken to sorting centers almost daily (depending if you're in the middle of nowhere or in a town). We also have recycling bins all over the place.
@@AlgarveAddicts Thanks Nick; I had read on another forum that you can run out of hot water and wonder if people modify their system to alleviate this or put in a bigger heater in a closet, etc. A bit of a learning curve for us not familiar with the local environment...Cheers
Thanks for that, Nick (and assistant!). It seems that you're getting as much enjoyment out of these mini adventures as we are and you're really building up a nice reference library which I'll be using should I decide to get a place there. Hope you enjoyed your lunch. You certainly earned it.
Well, driving in South Africa was pretty hairy too. If you're in a tourist hotspot you'll need to be extra patient as most people don't have a clue where they're going (because they're visiting). The other thing is that roads randomly change and aren't always that logically laid out. I'm sure it's because they've evolved over a hundred years or so and weren't built as a planned city. It's kinda disorienting when you turn into a one way street and realize that it's a one way, but the other way!
Great videos, Nick! Here is some more pressure for you: I too am waiting for your video on real estate (long-term renting and buying) in Tavira and the other eastern towns in the Algarve!
There is another golf course between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. Is call Monte Rei, and it also as a Michellin star restaurant. Is located in the hills north of Vila Nova de Cacela.
Hello, We just bought an apartment in Tavira (North east urbanization area near Recheio) and I would like to congratulate you first for that excellent video. Just a question: is it possible to rent a boat in Tavira because I got a licence and do you know prices per day for little boats or links on internet? Sorry for my English but I’m Belgo-French. Best regards,Jean-Luc
We have a apartment in Fuzeta and we regularly visit as non residents. We find the health system confusing, as must other non residents, in that if we don’t need immediate hospitalisation who do we call /go too/and where. We assume it is not the Portuguese local health service and has to be private but when suddenly needed who do you approach
I like Tavira, but am very much tempted by Lagos. By this time next year, I hope to have made a decision to move, assuming this Covid situation is under control.
Lagos is a pain if you need to access the airport ! It’s also much colder in the Winter. I’d choose Central or Eastern Algarve every time if you want to live here! (Western Algarve is fine for vacations !😂)
I like the surrounding area, being close to Sagres, Aljezur and Monchique. Quite a range of scenery. The hour or so drive to the airport isn't a deal breaker, and I'm used to the cold anyhow!
14:30 - Well, maybe include "Monte Rei Golf & Country Club" to yor list of golf courses in the nearer vicinity of Tavira? I mean... it's an award winning Jack Nicklaus Golf Course and consistently ranked as the best in Portugal. 😉
Enjoyed your presentation on Tavira! But really missed the real estate segment 😒. I am particularly interested is resort community property. Can you recommend two or three places that l should look into? Thank! Austin

Love your videos man, keep them up! I'm wondering if you could do one on international universities in Algarve. I know of the one, was wondering if there are others.
Cheers Richard. There is a bullet point on my list to do a video about education in the Algarve. We'll cover the local university too (UALG). I'm 95% sure there isn't an international university here (unless its a very small offshoot of another one).
Hi Juan, thanks so much. Just a quick correction, Artefact was closed and we had to head over to Restaurante Castelo (which was fantastic). Thanks so much for watching!👍🏼
Hi Nick, I would be happy to do that but we think we are heading north around June 10th. I need my second vaccine shot and folks here tried hard to help but without actual residence, it is not possible so returning to Sweden is now a higher priority. I am working on something you might enjoy if I can put it together but the first run will be in September. I will email you the sketch and hopefully I can build all the elements to get a pilot launched. The initial attempt will include invites to you and others who write about the Algarve so we can hopefully launch in a sustainable way.
I've been coming to Portugal for 30 years and never had an issue until now. I signed a lease on an apartment that was totally misrepresented to me. The worst part is the apartment has mold/mildew and the owner will not do anything about it. I rented through a small agency. How do I break the lease?

Sorry but, after viewing your "long-term rental" video I didn't learn much. When I walk down the streets of Lagos in winter nights all I see are empty apartments. Why is this when you consider that, in the Canaries or southern Spain, there are many over-wintering rental?
Uber is half what a cab costs. Pingo and Aldi's are great, the fresh "Market" is the best for fresh fish. Euro2.50 to take the beach ferry round trip(2023)
Great video. Considering moving here next year with my family. Wondering does anyone know what the demand for construction workers is like? (im a plasterer but would chance my hand at anything construction wise) Tavira or surrounding areas? Cheers.
Great blog Nick, thanks for taking the time to produce. A couple of things about the Tavira area: 1) the boats to the islands and the small train cost at least one euro per trip. OK for one day, but if you have a family, that cost can really mount up over time. An option is to drive 5/10 minutes to Manta Rota and you are right on a lovely 10km beach. 2) Jack Nicklaus might not forgive you for not mentioning the ab fab Monte Rei Golf Course he designed. Well worth the 140 euro fee.
Thanks for adding that Michael, I know schoolboy error! Apparently Monte Rei Golf Course won best course in Europe or something. Maybe they'll have to invite me over to video myself and some friends playing a round. I'm not that keen on the green fees at all!
@@AlgarveAddicts Hi Nick, thanks for the reply. Monte Rei are notorious for not doing any special deals. However, save up for the Green Fee because the whole experience is worth every cent. When you arrive, they put your clubs on a buggy (price included and essential), then escort you to an amazing practice area where practice balls are included. On the course, it is so privately laid out you may not see anyone else. Typical Nicklaus design for a fade off the tee. Good luck.

Hi there madcowford, no you can't use private medical at a public hospital to my knowledge. You'd have to apply as a resident and then you get access to the public health system.
Hi Stewart, the best idea is to think about what amenities you'd require, (close to schools, hospitals, other expats, beaches etc), then jump on a call with me or plan a visit. Good luck!

Absolutely, Nigel, the Algarve must be nearly unrecognisable since those days.
I love that fish soup!
Another great work.
Very nice.
Thanks for your review Ray, and thanks for watching 👍🏼
Hi there. I do love your videos and would appreciate a relocation guide. Thanks for all the information you provide.
Hi Surabela, you're welcome, just go to www.algarveaddicts.com and subscribe to my email list and you'll get one. Make sure you choose "relocate" not holiday.
"Very Interesting and informative" nice Editing, It seems, you very much need a car to get A-B in Algarve.
Thanks Nick. Yes, having a car makes life a lot easier.
Very informative video. Please do one on the schools in Tavira, would appreciate it.
Thanks Christine, I was thinking about doing one about the Portuguese schooling system and bringing in some people from the International schools to talk...
@@AlgarveAddicts Thank you for replying, Nick. That sounds great. I'm a teacher and like to keep on working a little even though I'm retired. Have taught German and Englisch in many different countries.

Thank you.
Great informative video. Awesome scenery too! Can't wait till the restrictions lift and the summer arrives so we can check out the Algarve 😊 👍

@@AlgarveAddicts hey that's cool to hear, I'm glad you like it 😁 👍
Thank you for covering Tavira!

I planned a week in Faro but was thing of switching to Tavira for a few days next June 2023. I saw there's a 45 minute train from Faro to Tavira, then what? Thank you for any useful hints!
Great idea, but you'd have to live above your tasca/wine bar if you don't want to drive (or close by). Get in touch, we can help you find something to buy if you want. www.algarveaddicts.com/contact
Greetings from New York! Another top notch video. We are loving your “Algarve Series”. The maps are also amazing.
They are helping us planning our retirement. Do you have Portimao in mind as well? Looking forward to the next episode.
Your daughter is gorgeous and that picanha was really something.🍷
Heheh, yes Picanha is wonderful, just be careful when you go to "Rodízios" here (basically all you can eat Brazilian meat). You won't walk for a week afterwards!
Sorry, yup Portimão is on the list, hopefully I will have covered the whole Algarve by the end of the year and then I can head up to other towns further north.
Hi Nick viewing from Ireland, always enjoy your relevant info packed videos. Thanks for all the hard work and great video productions !
Thanks for watching Alvin! It's great to have you on board.
Nick we would love if you could do a video on the Algarve Real estate market. If you could focus on towns closer to the Spanish border, that would be great. Love your videos and your daughter is beautiful. We have been to Lagos and loved it but are looking to be near the water more towards the Spanish border. Thank you.
Thanks so much Susan, I'll start thinking harder about it. 👍🏼
Yes please and focusing on best places for the different ages and stages -families, retirees, etc thanks 😊
Thanks for watching Royce👍🏼I'd just familiarise yourself with the country and plan holidays.
Wow, Jacqueline, I'll try my best. I've added it to the list of video ideas.
When you paddled the coast, did you do it in one go, and if yes, how did your nightly lodging work?
Yup, all in one go. We actually spent one night on a tall ship but camped the rest...

I'm looking to relocate to the Algarve and buy a small self sustainable, off grid farm with the opportunity to host wellness retreats. I'm flying out for a holiday soon and would be interested in viewing some properties. What area would you recommend for best value but access to amenities and what realtors do you recommend?
Hi there, I am starting to get into real estate but you can also contact my broker by filling in this form www.algarveaddicts.com/home Get in touch with me through the contact page.
Heheh, I've been here 20 years and have never run out of hot water. If you do, you'll need to install a bigger system, simple.
@@AlgarveAddicts Thank you
Thanks for that, Nick (and assistant!). It seems that you're getting as much enjoyment out of these mini adventures as we are and you're really building up a nice reference library which I'll be using should I decide to get a place there. Hope you enjoyed your lunch. You certainly earned it.
Hehehe, thanks Glenn. Yes, I love doing these videos, it would be wonderful if I could do them full time.
Love the videos, keep it up, driving in portugal, what dont you like?
Well, driving in South Africa was pretty hairy too. If you're in a tourist hotspot you'll need to be extra patient as most people don't have a clue where they're going (because they're visiting). The other thing is that roads randomly change and aren't always that logically laid out. I'm sure it's because they've evolved over a hundred years or so and weren't built as a planned city. It's kinda disorienting when you turn into a one way street and realize that it's a one way, but the other way!
@@AlgarveAddicts wow, thanks!
Hi Nick!! Thanks again for the videos. Yes… to a video about real estate currently in 2022!!

Hi David, I'm planning on doing one real estate video a week, but it's really tough. I need more resources, the time just isn't there.
Congratulations Jean Luc! Good news. All I know is the water taxis down in town or at Quatro Águas. Ask around there, I'm sure someone will help you.
Every one of your videos is better than the last. Great job. Really appreciate the info and honesty.
You're making me blush, thanks so much ✌🏼😊👍🏼
Would like to see more of Tavira and Cabanas
Really enjoyed your Tavira video. I haven't visited yet but will soon. Whats the price range of golf around Algarve? Best courses? Thx
Hi Barry, thanks for watching 👍🏼 You can pay anywhere between €50 and €150 for a round.
Another nice video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Martijn 👍🏼
We have a apartment in Fuzeta and we regularly visit as non residents. We find the health system confusing, as must other non residents, in that if we don’t need immediate hospitalisation who do we call /go too/and where. We assume it is not the Portuguese local health service and has to be private but when suddenly needed who do you approach
Go to the international private clinic in Olhão in the Ria shopping center.
It's always a personal choice but the weather is definitely warmer and milder in the east. Personally I love Lagos, because of the proximity to surf.
@@marco_cee_ Monchique looks amazing. It would be on my shortlist, no doubt. Tavira currently near the top of my list, along with Madeira.
Thanks for putting so much effort into these. Your videos are so informative!
That's a pleasure Becky, it's rewarding to get feedback like this. 👍🏼
The south is very Arabe and the North is very Romanets Thas wy the country is so apilling to the tourist.

Cheers Richard. There is a bullet point on my list to do a video about education in the Algarve. We'll cover the local university too (UALG). I'm 95% sure there isn't an international university here (unless its a very small offshoot of another one).
Hi Nick, great video and great lunch at Artefact. Only 1 hour to cross the Algarve, wow! not far from end to end.
Hi Juan, thanks so much. Just a quick correction, Artefact was closed and we had to head over to Restaurante Castelo (which was fantastic). Thanks so much for watching!👍🏼
Hi Nick,
I would be happy to do that but we think we are heading north around June 10th.

Thanks for sharing.
Good luck.
Love your video and the information, how about biking in that area? Are there possibilities to go with a bike or electric bike?
Thanks, yes you can. I'm pretty sure there was an ebike rental in Tavira.
