    I made this with Mandala Sparkle Aquarius yarn. I know it's not recommended but my granddaughter loves this yarn. I admit I had to take it off many times and had to use a size 11 needle to get it right, but it turned out beautifully! Thank you for this awesome tutorial!

    You have made this in to a lovely video that is easy to follow. I am hopeless at gauges and never know what to do to correct it. If the gauge ends up with more stitches do I go up or down in size needle. Also if I end up with more or less rows for the gauge do I go up or down in needle size? I have not made a garment so I know this is going to be vital or I will end up with something too large.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! Think of gauge as how many stitches fit into a certain measurement. With smaller stitches, more stitches will fit into that measurement than if the stitches are larger. The gauge for this project is 13 stitches in 4 inches. So if you were to get 14 stitches in 4 inches, more stitches are fitting into that space, so the stitches are too small. In that case, you could try the next larger needle size. If you got 12 stitches in 4 inches, then fewer stitches would be fitting into that 4 inch space, so the stitches would be too large. In that case, you could try a smaller needle size. This blog post on gauge might be helpful: yayforyarn.com/knit-crochet-gauge/ I hope this helps!

    Do you think I could use shawl in a ball for this and if so would you use size 10 knitting needles still ? Its a very pretty pattern Thank for sharing

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  5 лет назад

      Hi! Shawl in a Ball is also worsted weight, so it should work for this pattern. And yes, you would still use the same needle size, or whatever size you need to use to get the correct gauge. I hope this helps!

    Hello, I just finished this sweater. It turned out great. I want to add an edge to stop the curling though. What type of edging would you suggest that I use. I am awaiting your suggestions. Thank you very much.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад +1

      Hi Sandra. If you'd like to add an edging, I think a seed stitch edging would look nice and match the rest of the project well. The cast on and bind off edges have a bit of seed stitch edging already. Blocking your piece can also help with the curling, so I would definitely recommend blocking it if you haven't yet. I hope this helps!

    Hi! I've learned knitting throughout this quarentine and would like to make this for my mother as a gift, but I have a few questions regarding this video as im still a beginner.
    I measured her bust area and it measured 41", I see she would be size 2 by your measurement, but I also see that the finish of your cardigan measured 46", would you reccomend knitting her a size 1 if she doesn't like her clothing to fit that loosely?
    My second question will most likely regard the answer to the question above. My interchangable kits came with ropes sizes 32" and 40". What size would you reccomend to use if I were to use the reccomended size above.
    I am also having a bit of difficulty casting on the knitted cast on you show. Would it be a problem to cast on the long tail method instead?
    Thank you so much for your answers!!! I'm excited to begin this project.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад

      Hi Tiffany! If you're not sure which size would fit the way she likes, I would suggest measuring an existing garment that she likes the fit of. That way, you can get an idea of how loose the cardigan will fit before you knit it. If she prefers a closer-fitting cardigan, you could knit the size 1. As for needles, the important thing is that all of the stitches fit on the length of the needle, so I would suggest the longer cord length. It would not be a problem to use the long tail cast on for the beginning of the cardigan. For the center split, though, you'll need to be able to cast on new stitches at the end of a row. So if you would rather not use the knitted cast on, something like the e-wrap cast on would work there. (The long tail cast on won't work for the center split, because you won't have an extra tail to work with.) I hope this helps!

    This is really cute and simple! Is it possible to make it shorter? :)

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад

      Hi! Yes, you could make it shorter. As long as you have an odd number of stitches, changing the length won't be a problem. When you work the portion with the slit down the front, though, just make sure you subract the same number of stitches (from the numbers in the pattern) from the first part of the row as you subtract from the second part of the row. I hope this helps!

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 года назад +1

      Hi! If you'd like to make the cardigan longer, then after it is seamed, you could pick up stitches around the hem edge and knit some more length onto the cardigan. This would create a wide band of edging around the bottom of the cardigan. I hope this helps!

    Can you give us the measurements for the back and the two sides? I’m thinking I need larger (I did for size 2, but need three). I did a gauge but it looks small.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  2 года назад

      Hi Martha. Did you block your gauge swatch? Stitch patterns with lace or eyelets tend to open up quite a bit when blocked, so your pieces may get a bit larger after blocking. The width across the back of the cardigan (the half of the panel that is not split in two) from cast on to bind off edge should be half of the finished bust measurement after blocking. I hope this helps!

    Hi. Another lovely pattern and I’m really looking forward to starting it but I have a question. I’ve gone ahead and bought the exact same yarn as seen because it’s so beautiful but I’m having the usual gauge problems. I never get this bit right. I’ve managed to get the stitch gauge now by using size 6.5 needles but no matter what size needles I use I cannot get the row gauge right. I always end up with between 17 to 19 rows, never 22 as stated in the pattern. What on earth is going wrong here? Being a newbie at cardigans etc I’m really getting frustrated with this now!! Anyone got any advice PLEASE! TIA.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  2 года назад

      Hi Vivienne! Have you tried blocking your swatch? Blocking is an important step that opens up the lace fabric, so it's important to block your gauge swatch as well as the finished project. I have a video on blocking here: yayforyarn.com/block-knitting-crochet/ I hope this helps!

    do you use all of your yarn for this project?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 года назад

      Hi! No matter which size you decide to make, the yarn requirements in the pattern include a bit of extra yarn in the total yardage. So unless you alter the pattern, you will likely have some yarn left over. I hope this helps!

  • @1955viv
    @1955viv 2 года назад

    Hi,
    Would it be possible to make this longer?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  2 года назад +1

      Hi Vivienne! Yes, you can make it longer. Just increase the number of stitches when you cast on, making sure you have an odd number of stitches in your row. The amount of extra length added will be divided between the front and the back, so for example, if you added 4" of extra stitches to your cast on, it would make the whole cardigan 2" longer. I hope this helps!

    Is the gauge correct? I tried knitting 13 stitches and it never came to 4”. I tried with needle sizes from 4 to 11 and never got close to 4”

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад +1

      Hi Ranita! If changing needle sizes is not helping you match the pattern gauge, perhaps you could try a different way of wrapping the yarn through your fingers. I have a video showing several ways to tension the yarn in your hand here: ruclips.net/video/7qBK-K5qqaI/видео.html (That video is specifically speaking of Continental Knitting tension, but those tips can also be applied to other knitting styles as well.) I hope this helps!

    so in your pattern row 11 it says knit one knit two together yarn over knit 1 meaning you want us to yarn over the knit stitch not the knit two together i made that mistake

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 года назад

      Hi Skyler. The pattern instructions say: "Row 11: K1. *K2tog, YO* across to last st, K1." This means that first, you'll knit 1 stitch. Then, inside the asterisks * is the sequence to repeat across to the last stitch. So you'll K2tog, YO, K2tog, YO, K2tog, YO, all the way across the row until you have 1 stitch left. Finally, you'll knit the last stitch. Neither of the "K1"s are included in the sequence that is repeated across the row. The only regular knit stitches in the row are the first and last stitch, and everything in between is K2togs and YOs. Does that help?

    Is any reason why to cast on this way?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 года назад +1

      Hi Lida. You can use a different cast on method for the beginning of the cardigan if you prefer. However, the knitted cast on works very well for casting on in the middle of a row, which is necessary when you split for the cardigan front. So I used this method for both cast ons to keep it consistent. I hope this helps!

      Hi Patrice. Mandala yarn is a #3 Light or DK weight yarn, and this pattern is written for #4 Medium or Worsted weight yarn. If you use a #3 yarn instead, it will throw off your gauge and make your cardigan come out the wrong size. I recommend using a #4 yarn, as that is what the pattern calls for to get the correct gauge for the pattern. I hope this helps!
