Awe, I’m so sorry for your loss. 😢 It’s so sad that English budgies have a short lifespan. I guess they were just bred for show without consideration for their well-being.

Some breeders will breed budgies with bad hearts without knowing and it's passed on to their clutches sadly. If they have good hearts they can live longer.

I had Corky an English budgie. He was born with a small hole in his crop. while getting older, more and more food escaped from his crop. Due to the fact that he was in perfect physical condition, he was happy. No problems at all. the only thing the vet told us is to make sure he can always access his food. when he got older, he flew a bit less. He was constantly free, had the whole house to fly around. when he got tired, he went to his cage to rest and then up flying again. He had a great life. Was really a shock when I found him dead one day.
    He reached 10 1/2 years.

I'm very sorry for your losses. My family had an English Budgie named Nicky (aka Big Nick) who made it just short of 9. I knew English Budgies didn't have long life spans, but I didn't realize how old Big Nick was for his breed. Years before him, we had another English Budgie named Chuck who passed away suddenly a few months short of 2, so I've been on both sides. Both were such awesome birds.

I recently found a budgie - flew right in front of me outside and wanted to be picked up. I haven't found his owners, so he's been with me for a month now. Now I'm thinking I'd like more budgies at some point, and was looking at an English one - but after learning they have shorter lifespan and health-issues, THANKS TO THIS VIDEO 💕, I don't think I'll get one. Different thing to rescue adult ones, but I won't go and buy a young English budgie.. Healthiest is the best. Thanks for this informative video!!! Learned something.

Thanks for another great video Donna. Isn't so sad to lose a bird even when its kind of expected? Your vet sounds great by the way, you have to be realistic with these little guys over what you can do for them.
I think a lot of the people who breed the English/Exhibition types (and I do apologise to the good guys out there!) are breeding just with the size/colours/more feathering in mind and often inbreed to "fix" these characteristics in, which doesn't benefit health. So that combined with their larger size can be hard on them.
They are such little sweeties though and I wouldn't be without my little rescues ❤
Oh and I don't personally have or know anyone with an exhibition type over 5, my oldest is 3 and has been very ill (touch wood he is very happy and well now!) I'm sure there will be many lucky folks with exceptions to the rule out there. I believe the oldest ever recorded pet budgie was 21 ?!

I'm so sorry about Ocean. I have three English budgies, ages 8, 6 and 2, all males. The 8yr old was a retired breeder that I rescued, the 6 yr old I adopted when he was 2 and the 2 yr old I adopted last year. They are all doing great but my 8 yr old is slowing down and has become a bit thinner. He still plays with toys and chirps but he is getting arthritis in his legs. I also have regular parakeets but I can't keep them in the same aviary as the English because they are so much more hyper and the English budgies don't like it. I think the English budgies are more calm. I didn't know the lifespan was so short but I love these guys so I'm thankful for as much time as I can have with them. Your birds are lovely, and it's great to see how you care for them.

Awww, so sad that another one of your pets has passed. I liked seeing your English budgies in your videos; Ocean will be missed. I too never knew that English budgies have a shorter lifespan when compared to American budgies. You have a great vet that took the time to examine your birds and make recommendations/suggestions; the vet I went to would give me 2 minutes, give a quick opinion and leave the room. Have not been able to find a new vet, very few avian vets in my area, but thankfully my 4 budgies are doing well. You put together a very informative video. Nice to see Splash, he looks great. Hope you are not too mad at Jack for his behavior towards River with that growth on his wing; Jack's testosterone is the issue, so maybe Jack will have to sleep in his own cage at night for awhile.

Animals know death and don’t grieve like us they accept it if they see it but your right if their friend just leaves and they never see a body they don’t know why they are gone and are far more likely to fret but seeing and sniffing a dead friend or companion is usually accepted much more easily than that not knowing ever does people don’t give animals credit about so much

I had an English budgie (he is my profile picture and also my account was named after him). He died back in mid-March and he was 6 years old. He was six months old when we bought him from a bird breeder, so we had him for five and a half years. I remember that I was the only person he was very close to, and he wasn't completely tame so he would typically bite if he was touched (but sometimes he would let me pet him lightly). He was also unable to fly and was born epileptic, and would have a seizure each time he fell. But usually his seizures were very short and he would seem to be fine afterwards.
I remember his last seizure was unusual because it lasted for hours. He jumped and hit a metal table, but was unable to recover from his seizure. I had him with me, and he jumped a second time and his whole body started spasming. I remember he kept doing it so we put him in a shoebox and put a small towel at the bottom of it, as well as his favorite bell toy and some food and water. He spent overnight there and was dead the next day.
I still have two lovebirds (one is six and the other is year and a half old) and when he died we showed his body to the other birds so they know that they won't see him anymore. I remember the older lovebird would bully him but the younger one would try to be friends with him, and sometimes they would sit next to each other. We buried him in the backyard in an oatmeal box. His bell was buried with him. But we did save his foot band and cleaned it off.
But I remember that nearly two and a half months later I dreamed that he came back and visited me. I remember that in the dream, I was told that the bird wasn't actually dead so he was unburied. I also remember there was a fourth bird, a cockatiel that we got as a replacement. But I didn't know he was still alive until a week after he was unburied, so when I found out I felt bad and decided to spend time with him. I remember he didn't look old or sick, but he looked young like when we first got him. I also remember that he was happy to see me and he was letting me touch him, something he rarely let people do when he was alive. So I decided to take him outside to different places with me. I also wanted to show him to the younger lovebird who missed him and was friends with him, but I couldn't because I woke up.
It was such a strange dream. I have never had anything like it ever in my life. I remember that when I woke up, I was crying basically all day as well as for the next few days. But just thinking about him makes me cry because I cannot imagine how painful it was for him to die from a seizure.

I've actually heard some people believe that dead family members or animals will sometimes visit in dreams to say goodbye. I was wondering if that might have been one, since when I looked up the characteristics of those dreams it had pretty much all of them.
When I told an online friend about it, she told me that a few years ago one of her cats died and that night she said it visited in a dream and she woke up crying.

The dreams are all different. Sometimes I just see them in my dreams walking around or sometimes I am interacting me with them. I had dreams of my Ringneck Rio when she passed, she would want my attention but sometimes I would see her flying outside 😊

my english budgie was 7 yrs old, never had a health scare, and didn't die from sickness/old age. He died from an accident I could've prevented 100%, everyone tells me budgies dont live long anyway and to not blame myself but damn i miss that little boy.

he had a bit of a tail bob and seemed to be kinda lazy, i assume it was him being chonky due to a seed related diet, the breeder sold him to me for a whole $25 because she thought he was splay leg baby and didn't even want me to take him. The most amazing and special bird I ever had, he was so gentle and trusting, never once bit me, gave me kisses, wanted cuddles 24/7. I am so sad I lost him and it's a cruel way to learn a lesson. Loved that lil bird so much and wonder how old he would've gotten if the accident didn't happen :)

English budgies have a shorter lifespan because their body has grown but there insides are still teh same size for that their heart cant support their body for the average lifespan as a normal budgie.

Donna, so sorry for your loss and for having two birds not feeling well. I knew nothing about English Budgies until watching this video and you presented everything so wonderfully. The avian vet seems very knowledgeable and kind and thorough. When Puffin, my Orange Winged Amazon, had a feather cyst as the feather emerged from his skin it formed a snail like appearance but o think your vet would have noticed that if the lump is a feather cyst. I'm sad that you are going through all of this. Apollo was pecking the phone screen while I'm trying to type this! Maybe he wants to send you his condolences too but his spelling is atrocious. Please take care of yourself too as having sick animals needing extra care is stressful on your body and soul. Sending hugs and birdie kisses from Florida.

My guess would be that English budgies came about by a grasskeet breeding with a regular budgie And owner took over the breeding from there. Doing a lot of inbreeding causing heart and other problems. If not a grasskeet then one very similar.

in 1970s Australian domesticated Budgies used to have a 10 plus year on average lifespan...but unfortunately in the 80s all these selective experiments started with white budgies, violet budgies etc.

I had an English Budgie for 3-4ish years. I'm pretty sure she was sick when I got her but I think I gave her a longer life by getting her. I loved her a lot. She had a lot of problems though. She got a lot of blood feathers and had a growth on her wing. The vet did an operation and took it out but not long afterwards we found out she had cancer and they couldnt operate on her. She was having seizures and really struggling. The vet said I could keep her alive if I wanted to but I thought it best to put her down so she didnt have to go through that any more.
This video was really helpful. I hate that budgies have to deal with this but it's nice to know I wasnt the only one. Thank you

My budgie is half English Budgie like your sweet Splash, his name is Bailey, he is currently 12 years and 10 months old.
I also had 2 1/4 English budgies neice and nephew to Bailey who I lost last year at nearly 10 years old. One to seizures, which were being treated the other an unfortunate blood feather that happened while I was not home. He was taken to the vet, treated but passed the next day.
I do completely agree that English budgies do have shorter lifespans with ill health seemingly appearing early on though, perhaps mine being mixed has given them a blessing of many more years than average.
I am so sorry for your loss of Ocean. I wish for good health for your flock.
As you said, it is so important for our feathered friends to see their loved one too in their passed state. It is a part of grief for them and understanding, it is emotional too watching them, but I believe so deeply that it helps their mind too.

Absolutely heartbreaking. I have had parakeets since I was a child. I wanted to locate a facility that sells the English Budgie . A friend of mine purchased on in the mid 90's. The bird actually lived a long time. Currently, I reside in the Southwestern portion of Illinois. (The Land of Nothing) where I am originally from Massachusetts (The Land of Plenty) There isn't anyone around here that sells the English Budgie. ;-0 English Budgies need love too!

Hi I am sorry to be a pest but i had to look up what defined an English budgie because I honestly didn't know they were an actual thing and i have to say now I understand. What you are on about and for my understanding the birds that you know of as English budgies have been selectively bread over time to specifically look the way they do with there larger heads and so on to be shown in compositions. I do not feel this type of budgie is a true representation of budgies that are tipically available in the uk pet trade. These birds are on the smaller side and are i suppose less poofy than the show birds

I had a rescue English budgie last year for only a couple months. He came to us with the exact same fatty-looking growth by his vent that Ocean seemed to have. Piper also had the start of similar growth by his nostrils and on his wings. The avian vet said that it was likely an overgrowth of keratin. He was suffering, so we chose to euthanize him... Poor guys!
