In my excitement about this colour, I forgot to say - hi my name's Kenzo! also, if you know anyone interested in learning about colour, pls share this video with them. check out Jared's channel, linked in the description. thanks for watching!
this video literally fell from the sky, I was having a HARD TIME with colors lately, it's really frustrating but THIS, THIS EXPLANATION IS INCREDIBLE!!! Omg ty so muuuch ;_;
Dear Kenzo, that Gollum-like exchange between you and you was unexpected and hilarious! Thanks to you I am exploring Procreate and color theory. All this new stuff is more fun than I could imagine. I share your excitement and can’t wait to see the next chapter of your adventures!
that's great man! getting into colour properly has been simultaneously amazing and sometimes overwhelming. we have to do a ton of practice to get a good feel for it
I'm glad you liked it Sarah! Jared has talked to me about a difference between muddy colours and interesting, subtle greys. this is something i still need to understand better so i'll ask him to get back to us on it
@@lovelifedrawing oh! Exciting! Jared the colour guru! I'm wondering if this has to do with grey vs. brown?! I'll find out when you share your studies :)
This came at the perfect time, I struggle a lot in understanding saturation (while I have a clearer grasp on values), I never know how saturated my colors should be etc.
I’ve noticed this when doing color studies of my favorite artists, I’d first try to mix the colors I was seeing then use the digital eye drop selector to compare. It was always much more desaturated than I thought, amazing how the eye can be fooled into seeing a big shift in color temperature when something is desaturated enough and surrounded by more saturated colors of a similar hue.
GREY COMPLIMENTS EVERY COLOR! this one portrait artist who lives in Spain (he is dutch) taught me something so profound about faces forehead YELLOWS , cheek nose PINK, CHIN = GREYS AND YUIP EVERY FACE FROM THEN ON I NOTICED THIS. THE OUTLING OF BODIES IN A LIGHT LIGHT GREY ALSO IS WHAT OUR EYES SEE!
This was like the most eye opening and most important info about color I ever heard and I think Marco Bucci, Sinix and you are the only ones that ever mentioned that in the thousands of art videos that I've watched:D
And by the way no idea if someone already pointed that out but there is a super cool optical illusion where you can still see the colors of the color wheel after they are gone at 2:35
Very interesting. As someone, that generally avoids the whole left area of the color picker I'll have to, maybe, start exploring on that side a bit more.
that's great Atharva! what is interesting is, even though i have understood these ideas, i still need many more hours of practice to really be able to actually apply it
This is a great video,I noticed this when using photoshop to check colours. I usually use a grey and add colour now to mix the colours for my paintings.
i used to often make this mistake of making everything in my painting saturated, but i understand color much better now , thank you for putting it in a scientific analytical way .
Grey, you blew my mind. Very interesting video. Actually like the whole channel. I love the use of color in the painting above the brushes. Thanks for the video
it was funny! glad, that you are talking about color now. i am still trying to use my watercolor pencils^^. will let you know when i successfully succeed. for now i stick to one light color plus its complement for the shadows.
Amazing. I remember one of your videos where you talk about this illusion our brains put us through when looking at a painting, and it applies here a lot. Maybe we look at a shiny green only to realize it's not really shiny, it just shines because of the context. Thank u ty u gratzie!
These kinds of fairly technical tutorials on color is common. As a noob you pick up interesting bits here and there, but when transitioning to use and jump down the rabbit hole of the masters of color you quickly realize these technical aspects of color are just half of the story. Artists that "gets" color can use them in ways very hard to describe, and it seldom revolves around using strong colours sparingly or seeing saturated shadows (even if that also can be a part of their ingenuity). When trying to understand how, for example, Basquait, use color you clearly see something clicks but have a very hard time understanding why. Please jump down that rabbit hole sometime :)
Thank you for this, it will definitely help in my next project, I plan to use grey paper to create a collage of my nephew, this will help color saturation and contrast when creating his face
Really thanks so much it was helpful, because I’m so afraid of using colors and I don’t know how to choose them, this’s give a little of push to break the fear....thanks...💜🙏
yeah colour is a bit intimidating, but if you get the values right and keep a lot of the colours closer in towards the greys, it's a good start. from there you can learn to vary the temperature and you're good to go!
Gray is cause by RGB light amount come close together(you can try it on RGB color slide in any drawing software). In nature, light bounce everywhere so you always get desaturated color
Kenzo ,hope you dont think im trying to correct you or anything like that .its just a tip i got from Helen van Wyke and thought it made a lot of sense when it comes to thinking of greys .
I have a question ... why not hear about the desaturation of the color with its complement, in which it varies to use gray? or in which cases use gray instead of the complementary to turn off the color? Getting from Argentina, love your content!
hi Neleya, i'm not sure i understood the question, but our next video is about colour illusions and contrast, like how grey against a warm colour becomes cooler etc
@@lovelifedrawing I apologize, for my English, in my painting classes they taught me to desaturate the color mixing with its complementary opposite, but they do not recommend using black, my question was if I used gray as they explain in what changes? thanks for answering 💖🤗
Ssssssss (sucks air through teeth and winces)... technically... grey is a value, not a color. It is achromatic. Without color. But I completely agree that it is under used as a color modifier; whether mixed in or as a part of the color field.

the good news is that values is more than half the battle!

yes it's amazing i agree Danae. our next video is about those illusions from our eyes!

yeah this stuff about saturation / grey is such a big deal and so helpful!
Very interesting. As someone, that generally avoids the whole left area of the color picker I'll have to, maybe, start exploring on that side a bit more.
Fantastic explanation done in a very understandable way. Thanks for sharing.

Really great ! thanks again. I am not into painting yet and this is super info for when I start.
Enlightening, thanks Kenzo.
Very informative!!!!
Take a look at Monet paintings, it's a master of how to embellish gray, and also Jeremy Mann for contemporary. Thanx for this great video !
good tips thanks Vince :)

My fav video of yours so far 💟 I have real problems with using too much colour!
That’s why we do a grisaille layer!
subscribed to Jared 💪💚
that's great Logan! you can tell how passionate he is about colour and painting so it's fun to listen to him talking about it

Kenzo.grey being not a colour but the condition of a colour. All the best.
Kenzo ,hope you dont think im trying to correct you or anything like that .its just a tip i got from Helen van Wyke and thought it made a lot of sense when it comes to thinking of greys .
OMG! I always was so confused about using grey! I Think its as as bad as using black ! : D thank you! great video
THANK YOU
Yellow pigment only reflects yellow light so the blue light was absorbed

To summarize, think fifty shades of grey.
5star video. Thanks

i love it when this guy argues with himself
you gray the color by adding its compliment yes?
i thought it was white :'c
well white is desaturated like grey - it's grey on max value, so that's not a bad guess!
😂
