Imperial or Metric? Which is better for measuring your guitar or bass string height?

- Imperial or Metric? Which one to use? Which is better? The answer is that they are both fine... but I use Imperial in my shop (most of the time). Imperial measurements and markings are generally finer on rulers or gauges so you can be a little more accurate - using the naked eye. And really, nothing needs to be more accurate than 1/64th of an inch in guitar work! I have made a Imperial to Metric conversion chart and I will have the link below (email me for one if the link does not work). Thanks for watching!

Great explanation, and easy for a numpty like me to understand
Excellent! Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this and all your bass setup videos, I've learned a lot from you. Some other setup guides/videos flip-flop between all 3 measurements so it's very helpful to have this chart.
Thanks, that helps.
Thanks for explaining. Extremely helpful
Glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you have subscribed to my channel?
Thank you very much. I was always wondering where to measure by. Top of the string or bottom of the string.
You showed I was doing it right. Thank you !!
Aloha from Oahu Hawaii 😊
Glad I could help - I hope you have subbed to my channel?
Nice video ! I use the Music Nomad string gauge which is really well done and accurate. Let us know when you’ll be making your gauges I will be a buyer ! 😊
For me the choice varies with magnitude and precision. For anything over 30 feet I go metric. For anything less than 1/64" I go metric. In between those I find Imperial is better for rough measurements and for convenient divisions (fractions don't frighten me).
For stuff around the house that requires mental arithmetic I find that in metric my brain switches to millimetres which for anything over a metre can get frighteningly close to the peculiar American habit of weighing stuff in pounds long after they should have switched to tons!
I've always preferred setting mine up using 64ths which is why I need to buy your string/pickup gauges. So much easier on aging eyes:)
That is why I made them jn the first place! 😁
I use both but use Imperial for sting action.
That works!
I use Imperial decimals, even finer than fractions.
*Metric measures rules!!!*
Decimal! Why would anyone use fractions? I haven't used fractions for 50 years, except for sawing lumber.
Good video. Wouldn't have occurred to me that the imperial system would be the way to go. Anyway....can you tell me where you buy the wire that you use to make the gauges with the wood handles?
Glad you enjoyed the video- I hope you have subscribed to my channel? I bought the brass rods on Amazon.
@@ManotickGuitarTech Yes I subscribed....Thanks
Like the string action gauges. How can I get them? Do you make and sell them? Enjoy the videos.
Look up a guitar string winder attachment on Amazon... I think mine is from Dunlop
The tool you were using was a wooden dowel with a right angle coming out of each end and you used it to check the gaps between the guitar and strings. You also measured the pick up height with them. Are they for sale somewhere?
I make them but they are not for sale... yet. Coming soon, I hope.
Very helpfull
Hi thanks for this video. Great advice. Can you possibly do a video on how each string is setup. My Stratocaster I set the action after watching your videos at the 12th fret all the strings set at 4/64’s 1 - 6 the same. But it was buzzing. Even at 5/64’s it had some slapping sounds. My relief is set at .008 at the 7th fret. So should I be setting the middle strings higher than the 1st and 6th strings.
Mark, try setting your neck relief to .010 to .012" relief... that is more likely to be the culprit. Not all guitars can have really low action: feet leveling, fingerboard un evenness... lots of factors.
@@ManotickGuitarTech appreciate you getting back to me. That’s great I will try that. Be great if that works. It doesn’t feel as comfortable at the moment. Great thanks 🙏🏻 love watching your videos again. They’re really interesting
Hi. When u measure the height of the strings , do u measure just one string of each For the low side and high side ? And what string do you measure to check the low E string and the high E string ? Hope that made sense. Thanks 🙏
With a Fender style, I measure all the strings individually; Gibson style guitars you only measure the 1st and 6th strings
@@ManotickGuitarTech Thanks! What about with a floyd rose style?
@@ManotickGuitarTech By the way great teaching!
5/64 = 0.078in = 2mm
3/64 = 0.046in = 1.20mm
Rounded in metric to make it easy :)
No idea why some people use imperial but if you wanna precision metric is the way to go.
No one in the world should use imperial for anything, ever ... 😄
😢dizmil there is far two much talk
There's only one problem with Imperial - the great majority of humans, myself included, have to reference to what any of that even means! makes no sense sorry.
lol - I get it, but nobody knew what the metric system was either until people started to use and learn it... to each their own. Thanks for watching!
