1977 (Jacques Laffite) Ligier Matra V-12, but I agree this Porche Flat 12 is a beast of a sound. It was said that the flat engines handled better in turns than the V engines. Both types were brutal on straightaways. Although the V-8 Cosworths were proven, as well and won F1 Championship in 77', if I'm not mistaken, by Mario's - John Player Special - Lotus/Cosworth V-8.
They had them because technically the 917 is a sports car not prototype and had to be homologated. It also has turn signals, a spare tire and luggage space to comply with rules! At the time sports cars could have 5 liter engines and prototypes had 3 liters so sports cars were faster for a short period.
@@Maxsmack yeah but you have hours, days even. Why can't the take them off the night before. It's the tires... The one thing that separates the car from the track. The tires
@@yes7797 the V is called a V because of the shape. A flat engine is flat because it's flat. That has nothing to do with the crank setup. The point you made is only valid for boxer engines. The 917 engine is not a boxer engine, yet it is a flat engine and not a V12
@@LarsMarsCars it may be an flat V12 engine If you want to call it that way. Where i live there is no difference between an flat engine and an boxer engine. This never gets old ohh yeahhh
Those tires are hugeee
Not bigger than my pp
brand new STICKER tires!! $$$$
This and 787b are my favorite race cars ever
Same bro!!!

CLK GTR is also straight up porn 🤌🤌🥰
Absolutely! 2 of the best for sure!
The 787b is in a class by itself! Insane!
I love this car for the tires tbh it’s so satisfying
A true work of art
Never knew they had on board starters... great to see it alive ! Thank you 👍

Those 12 they have a nice roar !,
Glory! Hallelujah! Praise be!
I had the pleasure of hearing a NA 917 at the Meadowbrook Concour De El Egance in Auburn Hills Michiga..Beyond potent!
I love that car!
For a race car the low idle is pretty smooth. And to get going from a standstill seems to be surprisingly easy....
those tires are thicc!
A sound I will never get old listening to. ❤
È una macchina unica al mondo!!! Regina indiscussa dei Box Bellissima perché non somiglia a nessun altra!!!
The width of those tires; gotta be between 15 thru 18 inch width 😄
Essentially "drag strip" width wheels imo
The Beatles and 917, the best songs
Mean sound....wicked power....
This was the fastest racecar in the world in 1970 as it reached speeds up to 248 MPH.
Relaxation 😌😌the sound 🤤🤤🤤
Such a raw beastly sound.😁
what a beast
Nice sound 👍🔥❤️
That's actually a Ford GT40. And you know it. 🇺🇸💪
RIP Vic.
Fun fact: this car belongs to 1970 and it’s faster than challenger demon on natural aspiration
They made a turbo version too with a 5.4L. Its probably one of the most powerful engines ever put in a road racing car.
Ford GT40
@@everyday80sdude86 the GT40 was much slower than this Porsche.
@@drewski5730 I agree. But they used many GT40 ideas and incorporated them. I love the 917. They are two different animals

What an amazing machine
Sounds like a machine gun!
😊😊😊😊
I wonder how much are a set of tires on this race car?
Rear tires jfc
How loud do you think that is irl? Like my brothers Jeep has a 350 vortec v8 and it’s loud, wb a 917?
Bro in the back filming with an iPad 😂
I just want one chance to prove I am not qualified to drive this car.
Music...
Why do they leave the spec stickers on the tires!! I never understood that
waste of time i guess, these guys change thousands of tires in their life and the 15 seconds to peal them off isn't worth it and adds up

@@arnolddamnit it wears off after a few hundreds feet of heavy use. 15 seconds is being generous even so times 1000 equals roughly 4 hours of time.
@@Maxsmack makes sense
@@arnolddamnitObviously it doesn't effect the safety/performance of the car; considering even commercial tire shops do the same...
Imo of course 🙂
Spa, but when and for what?

@@LarsMarsCars oh nice!! very cool, thanks for the reply.
😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩
its more a 180° v12 than a flat 12 :)
A 180 degree V12 is a flat engine. If the cylinder banks are flat, we call it flat.
Since the difference between v12 and flat 12 is the crankshaft and not the angle of the banks, its a v12 180° and not a flat. As far as i know
