After DTW world he has driven some of his dream cars and has shown us inside amazing collections and also the great roads in all those countries. Idk what you're talking about tbh. DriveTheWorld has been the best thing on Sam's channel and he has gained quite a lot of regular viewers as well.

Well, you're half right, Sam. The 917s were regulated under group 4 FIA regs (unlike the 910, 908, and 907 under group 5), but, in 1969, the category was changed from "sportscars" to "sportscar prototypes." It was a wording change meant to address the dominance of the MK1 GT40s in 67, 68, and 69. It meant that Porsche DID have to build 25 917s (where, previously, a manufacturer was supposed to build 50 cars), but that, unlike the GT40, the 917 never had to be road legal. There have been some subsequent road legal conversions that have exploited legal loopholes, but, unlike the GT40, the 917 was never road legal.

Great car and cool owner. Just one correction: the early cars with engine cover and rounded rear shape were unstable and unloved by drivers but once Porsche introduced the 'cut off' tail like this car has the 917 was reckoned to be a good handling car.

I was lucky enough to see these cars driven in anger many times at Le Mans and around Europe. The Likes of Pedro Rodriguez (my all time favourite driver) along with Ickx, Siffert, Oliver, Hobbs, Hailwood, Kinnunen, Redman etc. An epic era with Ferrari 512's, Alfa T33, Matra MS, Howmet and Lola T70's. Sports car racing the likes which will never be equalled again.

The replica 917 is pretty cool. Watched the real ones race - a lot, and there was nothing like them again - ever. The best drivers could exit slower corners with the tires spinning and just explode into the distance when traction was attained. They were a totally dominant race car. And that sound...sort of precise, hollow and light at low revs changing to a great raucous Brrraaaaappp at transitions, and at speed, well, it just sounded like the biggest baddest giant Gorilla of a Porsche it truly was.
I've had the pleasure of meeting this guy, touring his shop, and riding in one of his cars. Brian is a super nice, super cool guy with a rad car collection.

Unique video. I've not seen any in car pov videos of a 917 driven on the road. So awesome to see the extremely low drivers view. To see the car driving on city roads and stopped at the lights is much rarer than seeing any other exotic.
Growing up when these were racing and in magazines.....this was pure heaven. Even in none standard engine and gearbox. It's still a kick ass beast. Reminds me in the 70' Dean Martin's son had an exracing Ferrari P3 race car he had detuned and fitted a stereo for some tunes....I'm sure he only heard the radio at a traffic light if ever. A very cool car ,this reminds me of that Very kick ass !

The thing that's so beautiful about these things is how fucking low to the ground they are. They're so beautifully minimalist and taut in their design. Just look at how those front wheel wells shrug up to the cabin. IMO this car is the most aggressive, exquisite and beautiful car of all time.

I LOVE 917's, and have ever since I watched Lemans as a 10 year old. I even tracked down Kraftwerks in Wood End Australia many years ago and travelled 3 hours to take a look and have a chat to the team there. There's also a guy in regional Victoria here that build a Flat 12 duplicate engine from scratch I'm told. What a package that would have been. I was also the head drivetrain tech for the Joss supercar here in us, before I got into the TV game. Keep up the good work Seen Through Glass, it would be great to collaborate sometime, I've stepped out of television and I'm just making the transition to RUclips as we speak. :-)

I LOVE 917's, and have ever since I watched Lemans as a 10 year old. I even tracked down Kraftwerks in Wood End Australia many years ago and travelled 3 hours to take a look and have a chat to the team there. There's also a guy in regional Victoria here that build a Flat 12 duplicate engine from scratch I'm told. What a package that would have been. I was also the head drivetrain tech for the Joss supercar here in us, before I got into the TV game. Keep up the good work Seen Through Glass, it would be great to collaborate sometime, I've stepped out of television and I'm just making the transition to RUclips as we speak. :-)
