That's true. You also can't make price dependend on who's buying it. Thus why every product in the super market has the same price regardless of who's buying it. On an actual market you would be able to for example ask for a higher price from a rich person than from a poor person, since you know the rich person is able to pay more.

    *Oh my god, that ending:*
"... democracies fail when citizens stop believing in the legitimacy of democratic institutions and even if we are able to protect ourselves from extremist elements, what is currently hollowing-out our institutions is the encroaching oligarchy which the US and Germany are struggling to ward-off.
Maintaining a democracy is constant struggle and one that sometimes requires being realistic instead of idealistic. I would love to live in a world where ideals and Voltaire quotes were all that mattered but history demands we put facts over feelings. And the fact is that: pointing-out to your countrymen that he is committing the "naturalistic fallacy" won't prevent him from bulldozing your body into an open mass grave because he deems you inferior. In the same vein, it is also a fantasy to think people who have the power to bend democracy to their will, won't use that power given the opportunity. Extremists break the marketplace of ideas because they don't play by its rules; the same way the rich can bypass it entirely for their own benefit.
If we want to keep our freedoms and our ability to self-govern, we should not just view the Richard Spencers of the world as anti-democratic threats but also the Kochs, the Mercers and everyone else who is able to replace a good argument, with money." DAMN, I'm so using this.

The one ‘clue that I felt tapped in on something about ( let’s face it, the nature

On RUclips, there’s an excellent conversation with Stanley Kubrick, who managed
to read everything++ about the state of the USA/USSR Nuclear Weapons situation,
before he made the incredible ‘Dr. Strangelove’...he noted, “ People aren’t good with
Abstractions...” He seemed to understand that...it’s not the way I interact with the
world, but, as blatant as it is now ( Dead reefs, the Doomsday Clock including Global
Warming, Venice flooding, is there anything left of the Maldives...? ) I think that fact,
coupled with a ‘Mob Mentality’, and some vast emptiness that people fill up with plain
stupid behavior ( Adults who Argue, and a strange insecurity...I saw a few Episodes of
that ‘Real Housewives’ series about a decade ago, and none of them had #Bookcases! )
In any event, it’s a Void. The lack of an Inner Life, coupled with a Cowardice, an Aversion

How much of the recent changes in the climate are due to our activities ?
What can we currently do to reduce or reverse climate change and what price would we pay?
Is it possible or viable to stop climate change or do we need to look at adapting to the changing climate and (for example) move away from low lying regions?
China and India are the biggest polluters and are both increasing their production of pollutants. Whereas we, in the west pollute less and are reducing our emmisions. What should we do about China and india?

I agree with what you're saying about the limitations US government power, as opposed to "private" power, being used to regulate hate speech. I just wanted to add a bit of context about the SPLC and the role of nonprofit organizations in the US political system, at the risk of telling you something you might already know.
My main issue with your analysis is referring to these groups as "private sector" organizations, but this might just be a cultural/linguistic difference. In the US, the phrase "private sector" is used almost exclusively to refer to for-profit companies and entities that do not have providing public services as a primary part of their mission statement, whereas the "public sector" refers to governmental entities. However, the "nonprofit sector" is quite different in its social and economic role in the US and refers to charitable organizations. It includes everything from the Red Cross to the National Rifle Association.
The SPLC is a 501(c)3 charitable organization, referring to the legal code for the tax-exempt status conferred on charities. These groups "must be organized and operated exclusively for exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3), and none of its earnings may inure to any private shareholder or individual. In addition, it may not be an action organization, i.e., it may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates." They are also legally required to collect as much donor information as possible and to disclose all that information and their complete financial reports for each fiscal year. (Source: www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/charitable-organizations/exemption-requirements-section-501c3-organizations)
SPLC reported an operating budget of just over $44 million and nearly $450 million in total assets for FY 2017 (Source: www.splcenter.org/sites/default/files/103117_afs.pdf) This arguably makes SPLC a mid-sized charity by US standards, with the largest foundations dwarfing these numbers by an order of magnitude (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wealthiest_charitable_foundations). The median salary for nonprofit CEOs is $123,000 annually in 2014, though there were 76 organizations with CEO compensation over $500,000, including 10 that were over $1 million. (Source: d20umu42aunjpx.cloudfront.net/2016+CEO+Comp+Study/2016+CEO+Compensation+Study.pdf)
The nonprofit sector is vital to the functionality of society in the US, as the federal government and many state governments are loathe to allocate funds for and/or to directly provide social services, as I'm sure you know. I just felt the need to add this context for anyone who cares. Again, I'm sorry if I'm repeating stuff that people already know and for the long comment, but this distinction is quite salient to the understanding the functions of US society.
Big fan here. Keep up the great work!

If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them.-In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. I have one small critique.
While it is possible to amend the Constitution, it is incredibly difficult to do so. I'm not too familiar with the Weimar Republic's constitution, but in the US case it takes an overwhelming majority of state legislatures to ratify the constitution, not a simple majority of the American population. In 200 odd years it's only been done 27 times.

    • @Dorian_sapiens
      @Dorian_sapiens 5 лет назад +5

And, if I'm not mistaken, those 27 times actually occurred in bursts, with several amendments being added in rapid succession, at moments in history when there was strong public sentiment in support of change.

This paradox of pure tolerance is one where even Karl Popper believed that, in order to preserve freedom, we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Basically, to treat anyone advocating for totalitarian systems (he was thinking fascism) as an enemy within. But as the example of Germany shows, States cannot be trusted to carry out this vital duty. It then falls upon us to oppose those who preach intolerance, starting with Nazis and fascists. Edit: Let me add that opposition to the intolerant includes violence if necessary. With fascists and Nazis, it often is.

Up and until that situation is reversed, fascists are the much bigger threat to our society than any form of Islam is.

Other than that they are basic centre left. But aside from questionable and occasionaly obnoxious, they are not dangerous.
And again wholly agree: most muslims demonstrably moderates in their actions (as I think Shaun demonstrated in one of his videos), whereas the far-right is not. When a muslim walks into a bar, I dont notice. When a fascist does, I leave.

To be honest, I don’t think the “yelling fire in a crowded theater” argument is really one that touches the concept of free speech.
You can yell fire all you want, the speech is perfectly protected.
What isn’t protected is knowingly endangering people. If your vocal chords are the tool you used for that, it doesn’t change the fact that what you’re being accosted for is the endangerment.
Similarly, being charged with a crime because you’re dancing behind the wheel of a car isn’t a “dancing” regulation but a vehicular regulation. The dancing on its own is fine, what you’re accosted for is distracted driving.
