MASH was one show that had such great characters with actors to play them and when they left still found great characters and actors to replace them!! It never missed a beat no matter the changes! The Showrunners were just that good!!!
What makes it better is he is about the most down to earth family guy in the show, but in his first days in Korea he gets hooked up with a guy willing to just steal a General's jeep. And just loves it.
Too bad that Hawkeye missed Trapper by minutes when he got to Seoul to see him one last time before he gets sent back to the states and see his family again. He was in a hurry to see them again after Henry Blake didn't make it home to his family.
I remember as a kid, Henry is killed in the last episode of the previous season, when I tuned in to see the MASH new season premiere I was skeptical of BJ, since Trapper John was the #2 guy behind Alan Alda, but I liked him from the start...Mike Ferrel was given the ball and he definitely ran for a touchdown, time and time again....Then comes Sherman Potter to replace Henry Blake at episodes end....
Personally I like Beej better, he was his own character. Trapper wasn't much more than Hawkeye's understudy. Not a bad dynamic, but I think seeing Beej and Hawk bounce off each other on some issues was better.
@@blockmasterscott it was the same when Major Burns was replaced by Major Winchester. Frank was always the butt of the jokes and did not really have the means to retaliate, whereas Winchester was actually intelligent, witty and able to spar with Hawkeye and BJ.
This reminds me of the movie: Blake: I was told you stole a jeep? Hawkeye: No I didn’t. It’s parked right out there. Blake: Oh, I see. Well, never mind. 😆
I think he was born with three smaller fingers on his left hand. A cool thing is that he’s a good drummer. One of my favorite episodes too. Or should I say two, I believe this was a two parter.
@@cpmenninga Burghoff can play the piano too, I think it was in the episode where there was a big lull in the fighting and everyone was bored out of their minds.
Well the show had to go on but it got hit hard losing 2 characters like Trapper and Henry,it also shows the strength of how great an actor Alan Alda was and always will be
They were good but I loved Sherman and BJ and also Charles. Charles was awesome! Great show! and I like how Margret softened up as she became more layered and interesting (to me.)
@@LiveINyourGood54 Charles was my favorite character on the show, with Margaret as a close 2nd. Complex characters with flaws and virtues make the most interesting viewing. Frank was too cartoonish, BJ too boring and Hawk Eye too preachy.
I have to disagree...this was where the series began to find it's traction for me. They started to taper back on the adultery "humor" and move more into serious topics with more mature characters. I'm sorry, but I just don't find constant adultery jokes to be funny. The best things to happen to the show were the removal of Frank, Henry, and Trapper...and the addition of Sherman, BJ, and Charles.
I liked how they portrayed BJ's first time seeing combat and the condition of bodies as they are injured and what he will be seeing a lot of from then on. 🤢🤮
BJ was going to get into the worst one way or the other. It was sheer luck he got scooped up by Hawkeye and Radar when he did. The 4077th was the best place for a guy like him.
@@scotthamp384 Well, for one, neither of them were Generals. Both of them also got elbows deep in what they did at the MASH unit. That's who Hawkeye respects. I think I remember a General that chipped in and helped when they had casualties once and Hawkeye gave him a nod of respect, too. But it should be remembered the time Hawkeye and Potter were ambushed and Hawkeye absolutely disobeyed orders to use a weapon against the enemy. So Potter didn't get 100%.
All Hawkeye did was re-appropriate government issued equipment. At the end of the war, they’ll collect and count all the Jeep’s, subtract the ones that got blown up, and determine they’re all accounted for. He didn’t steal anything.
Why has no one mentioned that they lifted the idea of the stolen jeep from the film? Has anyone even seen the movie? Nowhere near as funny but an awful lot more accurate.

Exactly. Frank or Charles? Potter or Blake? BJ or Trapper? It really didn't matter.
I love how BJ is laughing through the entire scene about the whole thing.

"Salute it and get in!"
Those lines and Radar actually saluting the jack are funny as heck.

Nice touch by the director to show officers from other countries walking by in the background. This was a United Nations war.
I’ve seen this clip several times and just noticed that now. A very nice touch!
Radar shows an accurate depiction of saluting to higher ups.
Scream in their face and then salute?
@@EternusNex YES! I did it a couple of times, came around a corner and ran into some guy with stars on his shoulders or collars.

Not Seoul but Kimpo Airport which is close to Seoul.
I think they had to make him miss him, since the actor was no longer available
Nah, Trapper waited around for Hawkeye as long as he could, but still didn't have enough time.

That's a pretty big outdoor set just for that short scene.

Did Hawkeye not see the general who went it just before he and BJ walked out?

This is “Welcome to Korea”
Yes, but it's about the line
Ahhhhhhhh 👉😎
I swear this is the same location used for the beginning of the 1970 Movie...
Quite likely.
I was thinking that too!
Jeeps were built in Toledo
and hummers in South bend.
Radar mailed one home to Ottumwa. His mailman had a retroactive hernia!
clinger tried to eat one..
The Army would send jeeps at the time in wooden crate boxes. It would not surprise me that Radar didn't send a few home himself.
Its the episode that trapper left.
By the way that jeep smokes all that blue smoke, not hard to tell it spends a lot of time idling. Typical of transportation for "upper management".
