The way that test cricket is consumed\viewed has changed over the years. Back in the 70\80s tests would be broadcast on only one channel locally. You wouldn't be able to see overseas tours easily (involving your own team, let alone any other nations). Now with the various streaming\cable services you can see it all. When I was younger, I grew listening to cricket on the radio (especially when working), come home and watch an hours highlight package on TV in the evening. I'd be lucky to see 6 sessions live of each test match in Aus. If a team played 10 tests in a calendar year that was a lot back then. So yes, it's hard to keep up with the game every day.

As an Aussie, test cricket will always be the pinnacle. There is nothing better than test cricket in summer.
For me, I just don’t care as much about T20. Sure, I’ll watch it. But I can’t get invested and have a favourite team. I just want to see good cricket. In Australia we’re lucky where players still prioritise the Baggy Green, however I can understand how that’s not the case in other countries, due to disparity in pay.

He is a genuine legend, as an Aussie growing up in the 70's watching him, Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner fighting it out against my heroes was amazing TV. I had a couple of Mauritian mates who were brothers that I played street cricket with and it would be me and a mate as the Australian team against them as the West Indies team. No racism here but because they were very dark skinned that was their choice and we would play for hours every day during the school holidays. We even scored in proper scorebooks and if the batsman or bowler was left handed thats how you had to bat or bowl. We are talking World Series Cricket days around 1977/78. They were great days and days when the Windies ruled the world.

Michael Holding averaged 554 overs a year over all formats over his 16 year career.
KG averages 538 overs per year over a 7 year career across all formats.
Mikey averaged almost 14 first class matches a season and KG almost 10. Obviously Rabada plays a lot more shorter format stuff.
So the workload isn't more but the number of formats is and the travelling.

And Gabe just underscored my point about why cricket must not have franchises. As long as cricket franchises exist, the international governing bodies will never be able to regulate the game and give players time off. The governing bodies don't want the cricketers playing as much cricket as they currently do, it isn't in their interest, it shortens players careers. But, as soon as the ICC try and free up some time for the players, the franchises go, ' OOO look, there is a lovely block of free time, lets hurry up and use it all up before the ICC makes use of it'. And, the ICC is the loser in that scenario every time (as well as the cricketers longevity). Just the way that it works when you have private enterprise involved. Get rid of those fuck knuckles, and let the governing body rationalize the sport again.

I remember a small border gavaskar trophy of 2 matches in india in 2010. It was the last Ponting series and last chance for him to win a Test match in India. Ponting never won a Test match in India. That time 2nd test match, india 8 down needs 100 odd runs with VVS laxman and 2 bowlers to come..bowlers in terms of anderson and bumrah batting. VVS laxman with a runner coz of his back pain. Somehow, we won that match and i watched on tv my 1st experience of a test match alone and i felt this is something special. I want to watch more. Both of you are great analysts of cricket! Kudos to both of you! I being an ex professional club cricketer agree on your points. There's too much cricket going on.
According to me only top 4/5 teams should be allowed to play test cricket (India, Australia, England, Newzealand and South Africa). I am saying this because teams like Ireland, bangladesh and Afghanistan have been given the test match status which i do not support at all because they can't fight in this match and the match becomes boring.
And coming onto fast bowling, totally agree with the legend here, too much matches for fast bowlers! You have to give them time to recover. Great to her Gabe pointed out about Jofra Archer, i believe we have lost a very exciting bowler!

Gabe is on the money (pun intended) re Wi players. Until funding in international cricket is rationalised this will be the case.
WICB has probably the lowest per capita income opportunities while having the highest staging costs IMO.
I live in Barbados. Nearest island St. Vincent is 100 miles across the sea and you have to fly the teams & equipment. No ferries, no trains. Going to Trinidad? 260 miles! Guyana? 400 miles! Jamaica? 1500 miles! All by air.
Home market? About 5 million. So where's the money coming from?
I mean there is a lot more that's wrong but this is the abiding problem that undermines everything else

So here is the problem Nick and Gabe, too much cricket is not enough. If people weren't paying for the product it would not continue, but they are. The national cricket boards of most countries have bank accounts that border on the ridiculous. Up until the 80's they paid almost no one. Players would get the same amount of money for playing the game as they might get from working the same amount of hours. So they were being compensated for lost wages basically. When it became professional not only did players get paid better but the game exploded. In a typical year players would play in their domestic competition, in Australia that meant playing for their state (but sometimes international level players would turn out for their suburban club - grade cricket) in the round robin four day events. They would play five tests a summer and by the mid 80's 10-15 ODI's. They would then, many of them, head overseas to play in other domestic competitions and they would be called up to play overseas test perhaps 5-8 games. Not necessarily a lot less cricket but a lot less travel and a lot less pressure. It was still a game for them. I do think the international programme needs to back up a bit and allow for player investment in domestic leagues. Nations should be limited to say 10 tests a year, 20 ODIs and say 30 T20's or something like that and fill out the schedule so that it was even. Players should be limited in the number of T20 tournaments they can play and cricket boards should pay everyone that is eligible a base salary that was enough to live on. That kind of measured approach is the only way forward I think.

I think T20 is changing cricket because increasingly you're seeing cricketers specialised to a particular form of the game (in Australia Chris Lynn springs to mind - he'll chase T20 everywhere, but I doubt he even cares that Tests will never be on the radar for him). Some modern players seem to almost get confused playing longer forms of the game because they are so used to playing the quicker formats.
And Gabe is 100% right - part of the appeal in 20-20 (for supporters) is that even when your side is rotten, you feel the result is close and you might even fluke a win. But I think the problem is that's by design - T20 was designed to appeal to non-traditional cricket audiences (predominently women and children), and in domestic T20 competitions you often find it's more about the gimick and festival than the actual game itself.
After T20's success there was efforts to make fast, shortened versions of other games (if you don't already know the horror of AFLX look it up), but only in cricket - where the longest format requires such investment of time and attention it was most successful.
