The reason he is called"the wall" is because he saved Indian team from the difficult circumstances so many times... So he is the wall between Indian team and defeat.

Kevin Pietersen (one of Enlgand's greatest ever batsmen) said in his book that he emailed Dravid for advice when suffering from poor form specifically against left arm spin. Dravid responded with an email with training suggestions to help with defending left arm spin bowling. It worked, Pietersen gained his form back. He printed Dravid's whole email in his book. Amazing that a rival player from a different country helped him like that. Really nice guy.

You can plan every thing in the dressing room but when it comes on the feild you have to be able to instantly change ur strategy, you dont go inside and talk to ur coach , thats where the Australian Steve waugh was awesome and then Ms Dhoni was just amazing.
U know how important a Coach is in NFL , thats how much a Captain is important in Cricket but a cricket captain has to know the game and performance of, and act according to
    1 His team (10 Players)
2 The opposition team 11 players
3 His own game and performance
4 The Pitch Conditions coz it deteriorates over the duration of the game u gotta predict how it will behave.
5 The Condition of the ball ( dont even get me started on it I am a bowler i can talk for days on a cricket ball )
6 The weather (e.g humidity affects the ball how it performs etc) it can shorten the duration of the game and the game has to be decided by D/L system( mathematically) ( every one hates it) ,,,,and much much more.
To get him out was a very difficult thing thats why he is called "The Wall". He is the only player in the world who has faced 30,000 balls in test cricket and 5 people behind him on that list have already retired.
there was a very nice poster done by a fan in a game it said,
    Sachin is GOD
Sourav Ganguly is the God of the off side
VVS Laxman is the God of the 4 th innings
But when the doors of the temple are closed , even Gods are behind the "The Wall"
Test cricket is the Best cricket.

Rahul Dravid was the most defensive batsman, his job was to be the anchor man and make sure India don't get out for very less total. He was like the insurance.

The best way to think of Dravid in Indian cricket at the time of other greats Sachin, Sourav, Lakshman and Sehwag was that he was the Spine of the team. Not Flamboyant, but Rock Solid and Steady and person of integrity, money and fame was not his criteria, which is why he was respected and Trusted. While Tendulkar was brilliant and exciting to watch, with his fast scoring, Dravid's paced, measured and calculated innings was less exciting to watch for spectators. This unfortunately made him less newsworthy for the media and public who love fireworks. But he anchored incredible mammoth partnerships with such consistency and that too with different players never seen in Indian cricket, having partnerships with Sachin, Sourav, Laxman against the best bowling sides and that too in difficult foreign bouncy pitches , blunting the oppositions attack and never throwing away his bat for a brash shot even when he completed his 100 runs at each of those matches, so consistently that Indian team won so many matches because others could play their natural game with him anchored. Sadly, because of that he never got the limelight whom he partnered with, but today, in hindsight, without the drum beats of the moments, he is one of the very rare cricketer who is universally respected for his impeccable technique (especially in foreign countries, where many batsmen would fail) , his massive run contribution and partnerships but most of all for his humbleness, not grudging that his partner got more cheers from fan and media, and his integrity.

Captaincy in cricket is soooo very much different from all other games. He is KING. He decided who goes in ti bat, who bowls and when, he decides where fielders are positioned, when to declare an innings over or whether to ask a team to follow on etc..Every aspect of a match is the decision of the captain..

Some of my best memories of cricket growing up was with Rahul Dravid. I am so lucky to have seen the legend build up. It was '96 or '97, Dravid was determined to score his first century. He had debuted in 1995 in Lord's as shown in the video and had got out at 95, just 5 runs short of 100. And now at Bloemfontain in South Africa, I think still with less than 10 Test matches he was again close to century. How patiently he batted. I remember rooting for his century. From 95 to 100, I think he took 30 balls, such concentration I had never seen. Any student should watch Rahul Dravid, to learn how one should concentrate, focus.
Of course the sweetest memory is the win against the dominant aggressive Aussies in 2001 at Kolkata. He played with Laxman for 13 hours I think, that's incredible. For an entire day i.e. 4th day of that Test Match, on a spinning wicket, against the greatest spinner Shane Warne, they didn't lose a single wicket! It's been 18 years since then, I havent seen the likes of it till date!

So Cricket is a sport where the captain of a particular team has most of the decision making to do from selecting the team to setting up fielders in specific positions to get the batsman out or to pick bowlers who could get a wicket for the team. It's tough out there 🙌

The cricket captain has more responsibility and more onfield power than any other captain in international sport. He has to micromanage. He decides who bowls and he sets the fielders. He suggests to the bowler how he wants him to bowl. Moves fielders, sometimes a few feet, sometime to the other side of the field. Constantly thinking through a long day. Good captains are rare.

Brett Lee once said that if you do not like Dravid then you have some serious issues. He was considered 'The Wall' cos he was the most difficult batsman to get out and he could face any kind of bowling in any kind of situation or pitch. He played in the same era as Sachin Tendulkar (who was regarded as the best batman in the world) but still there were so many times in test cricket when we knew till the time Dravid was batting, India could not loose. The captain in cricket decides everything: from the position/order of the batsmen, which bowler would ball the over when and what will the fielders be placed when a particular style of bowl is bowled. For example, if the captain observes that the batsman is struggling with fast bowling and is not strong on off side (off side is the right side of the batsman from the pitch(, the captain would put a fast bowler in attack with fielder placed on the off side in strategic positions.
In baseball, the field positions are somehow fixed for the nine players but in cricket the 9 players can be placed anywhere the captain wants them to, though there are some rules like at least 4 players will always remain inside the 30 meter circle and not more than two players can be placed behind the square leg area.
So a captain plays a very veryyyy important role in cricket than, probably, any other sport.

In cricket, a batsman or bowler can be defensive as well as attacking. When the batsman is not looking to hit a 4 or 6 he is mostly looking to defend his wicket, it is called defense and when he is looking to hit a 4 or 6 he is looking to attack. Similarly when a bowler is trying to take wickets he is trying to attack and when he is just looking to not give away runs, he is playing defensive cricket.

A captain has to choose the playing 11 first and now you have to maintain relation with all 15 members of squad. Captain decide the batting and bowling coordination. Rahul became the wicket keeper as per Saurav's request to balance the team. If Saurav wasn't the captain, Dravid wouldn't have been the wicket keeper. Now the captain have to choose the bowling coordination in between fast bowlers and spinners according to condition. Other that that field placement, batting orders and hardest of all is speaking to media after the game lol.

No. In Cricket the captain of the team has the final say, is the highest in the hierarchy and can override the coach if he or she wants. There is no position called manager. The team is headed by a single Captain who is assisted by the head coach. All the on-field decisions are made by the Captain only and the coach usually sends in suggestions during drink breaks. Of course there are managers who manage the logistics of the team but they don't have any control on how players play the game.

The captain’s role in cricket is more important and involved than any other sport. They often pick the team & decide on the style of play they want from their team.
The captain sets batting order & decides who bowls, when and for how long. He sets the field for every ball and every bowler, and determines the plan of attack for each bowler.
In many sports much of this would be done by a coach or manager, but in cricket the captain is, in every sense, the true leader, tactician and decision maker for the team.
Dravid is known as a magnificent player, a master of concentration and technique. However the calmness and stoicism that was his strength as a player perhaps translated to a lack of charisma as a captain.
In England he is affectionately known as ‘The Wall’ because once he got settled at the crease, you may as well be bowling at a brick wall. There was no way past him and no weakness to exploit.
Also a true gentleman and hugely respected all over the world for his good character and masterful skills.

I appreciate your channel. It's great to see Americans legitimately following a new sport. I was the opposite of you. I grew up watching and playing cricket 24/7 mostly in South Africa and some time in England. I came here in 1984 and learned baseball. I can safely day that by now, I'm as expert in baseball a cricket. Same goes for rugby and Am. football. I got to watch many of the greats of the 70’s and 80's in person. I played the game a lot too. Of you have questions, let me know!

Fixing charges were not againt Rahul Dravid, it was captain AZHAR and vice captain JADEJA of Indian team of that time. He was too much down to earth, away from most of the controversies through his carrer.
He is called The Wall due to his technical ability but he was never charged from any fixing charges, he also & always had wall between him and controversies.

*Dravid transcended sports like I said earlier after Sachin , Dravid kinda super calm and great personality...his defense was so ugly solid that ppl called him Wall.. coz it's like bowling to wall whole day everyday..he just won't throw up his wicket..there was one more player like him called Shivnarine Chanderpaul from Caribbean..he once faced more than 1000 balls in domestic game.... there is no scandal in cricket...it once happened i reckon around 2000s i guess 4 players were kicked 2 were very gd player...in our whole cricketing history i think only that incident was the only blot otherwise everything is super clean*

Please react to this - India vs Australia - historic Test match in 2001 at Kolkata. Only second instance when a team following on has gone onto win the match. Australia were the dominant no 1 Test side in the world and they had 16 straight wins (this is a huge huge thing) and they had decimated this Indian team in the previous match at Mumbai. This was the 2nd match of the series. Its the highlights of this test match. A test match is played over 5 days, for 7-8 hours each day and each side has two innings with no over restrictions. Even if you dont understand the format, you can sense how electric the atmosphere is and how tense this test match was. The heroes of this match were VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Harbhajan Singh. You have reacted to Rahul Dravid earlier and this matched featured in that video as well: ruclips.net/video/mQGTXhqVmCQ/видео.html

We call them batsmen, rather than batters because the best have elegance and grace and anyone who aspires to be a good batsman will strive for that grace. It’s more than show, it’s the only way.

As a captain the challenge is understanding the game. In the sense that you have to know each bowler and his strength and also the opposing batter. Then you have to try to think about possible shots that will be played set fields based on that prediction. And if you get it wrong "keeping a field set that has gaps" or "sending the wrong bowler in at the wrong time and he is slatered" the captain get the blame.

Shoaib akhtar used to run from 40 yards to bowl 100 miles/hour and Dravid just defend like nothing and Akhtar again had to go for the next ball.

    • @udayrathod3786
      @udayrathod3786 4 года назад +2

@@BoringReviews he was the most defensive player, in cricket its about strike rate, how many runs you score per 100 balls, Dravid was always scoring leas than 100, his job was to not get out. Australian captain once said ,when Dravid comes to bat try to get him out in first 15 min if he doesn't get out than try to get other 10 players out as it will be much easier. Shoeib Akhtar said he used to run 40 yards and bowl his ass out at 100mph and Dravid would just leave the ball. Imagine the frustration the bowler goes through, you put everything in the ball and the batsman just decline to hit the ball. Once he left 41 balls and than played 42nd ball to get 1st run and entire ground celebrated 😂😂

Captain means managing the team on field setting up fielding and attacks as per each batsman and what line a bowler bowls and restrict the score to less than 300 per innings and when batting he has to set the final score for the batting side achieve and keep a great balance in the team with enough boyishness and fun and also seriously discuss the problems of each and every individual and with the batting, fielding and bowling cloches and finally the manager and talks with them all to finalize a plan for a team they play against. That's a whole lot of things for a single guy to do and manage.
