Vow was a company that Germany needed after the war. The country needed to put men to work and the country needed cars the population could afford. Amazing what 1 product can do for a country.
The VW beetle was not really "well engineered". It was actually a quite useless design (maybe good for uphill races, but for everyday use basically bullshit: only 4 adults and 2 children fit inside, a loud and heavy engine in the back, difficult to cool, no way to heat the interiour, heavy, space wasting, only 2 doors, no trunk, etc.). If you look for "well engineered" cars, you find the Citroen 2CV, e.g. Designed and developed in the same time in the 1930´s. The big plus of the VW beetle was the high quality of the production. Together with its nice, sweet, charming look, of course. The production quality of the (anyway not pretty) 2CV was quite bad. But from engineering point of view, the VW beetle was crap.
@@kriskross63 you are completely wrong. It was very well-engineered the engine wasn't too heavy in the rear in fact that coupled with the swing axle transaxle help the beetle transverse terrain that the Citron could never even get close to snow mutts and and the link pin front end was extremely durable and could handle bumps and ruts better than most modern cars the heater wasn't the greatest but from the very beginning they had gas heater conversions that could be hooked up to it to really heat the car up it was not built to load up an entire family in instead it was meant as a high quality cheap vehicle to drive that was a step up from the motorcycle all the parts use on it where of high-quality hella vdo Bilstein Glasurit etc. They look good they handled great and all terrains it was a very well-engineered and design car problem is a lot of people have horrible driving skills and don't know how to control a rear engine car and I'm sure you are one of them. There is a reason why Porsche keeps the engine in the back of the 911 because with a qualified driver that actually knows how to drive they are great on the racetrack and same thing goes for off road what do you think the Baja 1000 started with? So once again you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and the Citron is the ugliest worse engineer designed low quality piece of crap ever
@@jameswilliam904 you are completely wrong. The average customer is not a trained rallye driver. Lots of accidents happen with rear wheel driven cars (when Audi released their TT a the end 90´s, more than 30 people died as the failed construction was just unhandable, e.g.). I experienced both VW beetles and Citroen 2CVs in summer and winter... and the beetle is just a nightmare in winter. without a co-driver defrosting the windscreen all the time, or helping pushing the heavy car out of deep snow, you have no chance with a beetle in snow; better two additional people with helping hands are not far, too... The 2CV works with one driver both in sand in Sahara climate as in snow in scandinavia. With one wrench you are able to change weels, remove fenders, and start the engine at -20°C (and lower) without problems on your own. With battery low on a beetle, you need another car to start, you have no working heater, you are lost. You just don´t know what you are talking about in practice. Theoretically, you might be right. As I said already: For hill climb races and experienced rallye drivers accompanied by a helping co-driver, Porsche´s construction might be charming, but for everyday use it was crap. PS.
