  • In Episode #54 of The Martial Truth Podcast, I discuss the idea of should we snap the punch? If you are using proper body mechanics and principles, if you use the waist properly. Than the answer is yes, but probably not the way you were taught.

Excellent video sir, thank you. I am a Goju karateka and the principles you share are universally applicable for those who can appreciate them. I've also begun studying white crane chi kung in my 50's, which illuminates a different perspective on power generation. Your kobudo videos are also very much appreciated. My late teacher brought in several IsshinRyu forms to provide us with that aspect of karate training.

Interesting that you mentioned that. I trained in Isshinryu karate for a short time in 1973 and what I never understood is why there was also no 'hip rotation' in the punch but more like a hip thrust which didn't seem effective or practical. I boxed before I started karate and was disappointed by this so I went to another style.

Thanks for the video, Sensei. It always amazes me how in many, many RUclips videos long time Karate guys are doing punches and Kata with no hip. I definitely agree with your statement of "how much can you learn in 8 months". It seems to me like many of the big MA "franchises" in North America were started by people who had trained for anywhere from a few months to a few years, and that's still apparent today in a lot of dojo. If you had asked me to teach after only two years of practice, you would have gotten some very bad lessons:)

Sport= tag, no knock down power.
