I've always loved the opening fills. I'm a bass and guitar guy, but Mike Portnoy is a drummer that makes me want to try out drums whenever I see or hear him play.
Ive never heard any other drummer where I hear the only the drums and can figure exactly where in the song he is. He just added so much groove and clarity to DT. Fuk man. Cant even listen to the new stuff.
Dream Theater and Queen... My two favorite bands. Queen stopped coming out with good albums when Freddie died, DT stopped coming out with good albums after Mike left.
That's your personal opinion ,I love the Mangini era much more than portnoy one.Yiu don't speak for everyone my friend.Dt is still killer get over portnoy he left long ago lol and dt is still great.
@@thecryptohacker9976 it shure isn't i my opinion. I listened all the albums from DT, after the break i tried to listen to the new stuff. Didn't happen, to clinical and disney pop sound for me. It doesn't take me away the music as it did before, its stale and soulles.
La batería en The Count Of Tuscany es símplemente perfecta. Sin excesos. Trabajada para aportar a la canción lo que necesita, y con una entrada épica tras la parte ambiental de teclado y guitarra.
So much musicality in the beats. Danny Carry plays crazy rhythms also but I don't think they are as musical as Portnoy's are. He is a great drum composer similar to Peart. Like you can just listen to his drums as a song without any other instrument and sing a long.
Just different styles within similar genres. Dream Theater is all about whole-band unison. That makes any one instrument more reminiscent of the whole song. Tool started as pretty straight metal but evolved to have parts playing against each other, from filling gaps to sustaining polyrhythms. I like that unusual experience of sinking deep into those patterns. But Tool is otherwise rather monotone and both bands have mostly had heavy dynamic range compression which I abhor, so I don’t usually listen to them now.
Mike is just the man. But what was that @ ~12:09? a vicious snare role, but he was not playing it? is this a recording of his original drum part, and then he plays over it, but clearly misses that roll? Unlike the Mike. But then again this is a video to give drummers the drum only parts. Hey, he does it for the fans/musicians. No complains. Just awe. Moving on......
No its the original masteraudio track from the cd, then extracted so you hear only the drum audio. The video is also the original video recording take of the audio tracks, audio is before it comes on cd alternated with some tweaks in the final audio master track.
"Mike Portnoy and the Magic Changing Shirt" is the joke. The videos are edited together from different takes on different days and synced to the console audio. That's why some of the video and audio don't match....there simply wasn't a video recorded for the particular take used in the final cut of the song so him and his editors probably found the closest looking one to put in the DVD release. Also another scenario could be that it's an overdub that is impossible to play with the rest of the song (think My Hero or Something). Unlike Mike to do this but I am only aware of one live performance of this song with Portnoy still in the band and it's a crappy cell phone video so it's hard to tell exactly what's being played or not.

Well i kinda think the other mike did a good job in the last album it surely isnt the same thing he said it himself hes not portnoy ans wont Try to be. He has his own way of playing
I think the audio is the original drum stem and he is playing over it with no live audio, so basically just to give you a visual. It’s probably pretty hard nailing the original exactly as crash hits and other fills often change or adapt over time
@@dancallaghan528 it's different takes. There probably wasn't a video taken on the specific day that take was recorded so he found a video that looked close enough.
Kappa Rules Portnoy likes to do multiple takes and take the best parts of each take and piece them together into the song. So the video may not be completely lined up with the audio
you both wrong, what you see is the original video record of him drumming in to the album. There's probably no other takes than this one. The drums you hear is him drumming on the final remastered drumtrack. So thatswhy sometimes you hear diffrent cymbals when he hits them or toms he doesn't play, he added them later into the final drumtrack of the album. > what you hear its the final cut and he dubbed his original studio drumvideo over that,.
LOLOLOL!!! at around 8:00 it all goes to hell! the sound doesnt match up at all to the drums. You hear a floor tom when he hits a splash cymbal and hear a crash when you clearly see him doing some hi-hat work. not hating! just looks so F***ing hilarious! XD
***** A drum trigger is something you attach to the rim of the drum that detects vibrations. When you hit the triggered drum, it sends out a pre recorded drum sample, which replaces the actual sound of the drum. It's essentially making an acoustic drum into an electric drum. You can make a drum sound like whatever you want; A clapping sound, a barking dog, or just a good sounding drum. Triggers are often used by death metal drummers, they often replace the bass drum sound with a clicky sample so that you can hear everything they're playing with their feet (that doesn't mean that every bass drum that sounds clicky is triggered.) It was also used a lot in the 80's on snare drums to get that big, reverby sound. They used triggers on the snare drum and the bass drum on Images and Words. Hope this helps!
Triggers, no. He may use the same thing I do on my bass drums. There's a stick-on pad you can buy that has a very thin metal sheet inside that gives your bass a real click/punch when you hit it.
That moment you realize you can fill in all the other parts in your mind.
I'm actually using this as my backing track for practising this song with my band.

True. He's is not the guy who does high technical stuff for show off. He has feel and groove.
Joe Peffer you’ve got it! He is unique
You speak for all of us here man!
That's what he has, he's another instrument to listen to, not just rhytm. Mangini is technically supperior but he has no groove like Portnoy
The lack of imagination of this mew material is insane... The mind behind DT, Petrucci, Rudess and Portnoy...
The intro pattern is so Badass, very creative approach drum wise to the riff
that's basic Portnoy

The best reason for playing drumms, MK powerfull, atack, progressive, emotion, modern and in the end great sound. Support!
Man I REALLY hope there were no drum samples mixed into these drums, they sound soo good.
Miss u :( in dream theater family...
11 years later, he's back!
Nothing short of amazing. Stunning performance.
my favorite DT song and drums
One of my favorite songs. One of my favorite drummers.

Quien más escucho la batería con todos los instrumentos 😅 y hasta la voz

Not the dry hits of the latest album

How i miss this guy in dt
Mind blowing.
🙌
minhkhoa2109 You're right, the new album has the dry hits because of Mike Mangini.

Amo esta canción!! :D
Mistake at 12:09 lol, you can even see it on his face :O
But that's my point though
You guys only come here to find mistakes...... Not to enjoy the purity and greatness of the song..... Damn man!!
DT died the day that Mike left the band 😢😢
but he rejoin again
Christmas came early for you buddy
I wonder how many individual notes he had to memorize . . .
damn ... i'm trying to work put this on a daw ... IT FCKING OFF THE METRONOME WHAT THE HECK PORTNOY ???
Is it me or there are some plates here and there he doesn't play but can be heared?

It's because the video doesn't include punch-ins so that you don't get jarring transitions 10 times per measure.
Portnoy has used triggers in this album?
The only time he used triggers was Images and Words, because the producer forced him to use them

Great drummer, poor decision maker.
Jason rullo is much more technical and skilled than portnoy
So go and watch Rullo videos, wtf are you doint here?!
@@netrunner1145 why are you mad? Your hero Portnoy is not that good? Fanboy!!! James Labrie is a Very bad Singer too😂😂😂😂
