I’m in the neighboring state from you and glad I came across your video this morning because my front lawn is a disaster and I’m trying to rescue it, it’s 80% weeds, all types, Applying tenacity this morning and planing to detach, aerate and overseed in two weeks
I did the routine in spring. Front lawn performed phenomenally!!!!! Several Neighbors inquired about the front lawn. The backyard however… the lawn pretty much laughed at the weed killer. >75% of the lawn looks like weeds. Big/thick weeds, especially crabgrass. Some weeds died and new grass came in but the weeds continued to overpower the backyard lawn.
Very thorough presentation and explanation. I appreciate all of the recommendation - timing is also important, as to when and what steps to take next and in what order.
Thanks for this video bro and good job explaining everything. My front yard is covered in weeds..I put down some Tenacity about 6 days ago. Some weeds are starting to turn white, others aren’t yet. Looking to do some overseeding in a few weeks and see how it goes. It’s nice to see certain tips for beginners that can save us money. Good to have you back! So a few things. Poa is beating my gr…ass (in the back yard - it’s horrible). Two weeks ago, I used the hand spray bottle version of the spectracide weed and grass killer, with some surfactant. It didn’t really kill but turn them brown. I’m not advanced enough to get into mixing. So what now? Do the same thing again? Secondly, I have zoysia grass in the front (and mixture in the back). I was thinking of overseeding with Bermuda grass after dethatch and aerating. Is that a good choice? Lastly, since zoysia is a running grass (and mine seem to still be green & growing) would dethatching kill it? I know the roots need a resolution. Would plugging the lawn be sufficient? Sorry for the book of questions 🤦🏾♀️
A second application for the poa is completely fine to do. You can overseed your lawn with bermuda grass, but just know bermuda grass is very dominant and will take over the grass. You can dethatch Zoysia grass that's totally fine it won't kill it
Been working on my lawn the last couple years. I kept trying to kill off what I thought was crabgrass but turned out to be dallisgrass. Last fall I used Round Up to kill off a ton of it along with some crabgrass. It worked pretty well. Some of the really bad areas looked better after reseeding. But this heat and stress here in NC took a toll on my yard. Not looking to great and thin in spots. I also need to figure out a way to get rid of some bermuda that is in my fescue lawn. Any and all tips and ideas are welcome. Thanks for the videos.
This is my fall overseeding plan for my terrible looking back yard: i bought a 4-gallon backpack sprayer and i plan to blanket my yard with Tenacity, then about 2 days later i plan to dethatch and cut low, then i plan to lay my new seeds, then i plan to top dress that with peat-moss and top it all off with my Scott's starter fertilizer. Hows that sound to you?
Not gonna lie, felt a little discouraged to overseed, well, overwhelmed as it’s my very first time ! Thanks for the motivation and for simplifying it because I was definitely overthinking it.
How do you deal with using a pre-emergent, such as prodiamine, while trying to reseed in the Fall? Do you let the new grass mature a bit before putting down pre-emergent?

You can also get the expert garden fertilizer (green bag). That's what I used on my lawn. You also may want to get a bag of grass seeds to reseed bare spots if you have some
Thank you for the video. I am going to replace grass with dymondia ground covering in the fall. I have already removed the grass. Any ideas best way to prepare and after planting. Thanks.
Mine grew tall enough to go to seed due to low gas in the mower and my being preoccupied with a project at work. Along with that my neighbor had a tall weed blow seeds into it. Now that we’ve cut it down some of the cut grass and weeds is stuck in the yard and needs raking.
Where do you buy the large bag of grass seed you showed? I’ve also struggled with people saying “only buy from local nursery” but their prices are almost unaffordable.
For sure it never ends 😂 I’m waiting to see how u do the preparation for the overseeing ! 😀 Also, I know I’ll mess up the spraying. if I only have small areas of crab grass is it worth pulling it up with the tool I have or just dethatch and over-seed ?? Thank you
Thank you for your videos. My lawn looked better this season but I dropped the ball on watering during the summer. 😅 Lesson learned. What temperature do you aim for to start preparing your lawn for overseeding? Or is you rule to begin late August early September no matter what? Lately, It's between 80 to 90 degrees in my area and my current lawn is showing alot of heat stress. Also, are you planning to apply a lime treatment ? I am thinking of using( slow release ) lime before overseeding. My soil test said I needed it. Thanks again! Happy Labor Day !

I never understood the concept for wanting annual ryegrass in the lawn. That and red fescue. They last for one season and the red fescue looks to me like a bad case of crabgrass in the lawn.
@MixingGBP Red Fescue is more for like high traffic areas and dry soil. It's looks better when cut lower. Annual rye grass is just for a quick grass connection. It normally sprout in 5 days in ideal conditions
Ok thanks. The first time I planted red fescue I thought they sold me a bag full of weed seeds, lol. I’ve been using Sublime weed killer. It works but is expensive, hard to find and I always feel like it’s very toxic. I tried an old bottle of Spectracide hose end product and it worked pretty well. So I will get more of that for the problem areas in my backyard.
Sounds like a "contractors mix". The annual rye grass will actually do a really good job of opening up the soil. It will aerate the soil for you as it grows deep roots. I would be interested to see how the soil looks once that annual rye sets in. Maybe you can take a quick video of it and share at some point in the future.
Very good video very good advises the only thing that made me raise an eyebrow is your smaller cheaper bag of seeds...you've been using like you said the same big bags of seeds for many years, if you start putting down other types of seeds it'll not match with the rest and you'll regret doing that. i speak from experience i used too many different kinds and brands of seeds in my lawn for a few years and now it's not all the same types of blades different colors etc. and i regret not sticking with one kind of seeds...just saying.
