    I've been working with the TLM 107 for over a year now, and I can tell you that this microphone is a beast. Sounds amazing, is versatile, robust. The sound is real, clear, maybe not as natural as the Austrian Audio OC818 (which I also have), since Neumann microphones tend to have a "neumannian" sound. I would put the Austrian Audio OC818 in first place and the Neumann TLM 107 in second.

    Thanks. Great vid. I have the 103, but in a 6x6 booth, it captures a fair amount of the room. Other cardioid only mics do too, but the 103 is particularly sensitive, so gets every single reflection. I tested a few other mics, including the 107, and found that super or hyper cardioid eliminates that for me, and I don't hear any of the rear reflections associated with that. Pretty much all other reflections are eliminated. Sounds very intimate and tight, which is what I'm after. The Rode K2 was one I tested, and you can dial in between patterns, so infinite choices - but the TLM107 won out; Neumann sound plus hyper cardioid option! (the only other was TLM170, but it's very expensive and I've heard can pick up radio waves).

    I work with assorted high level mics in my studio and can tell you that the 102 is the best mic in it's price range by far... I prefer it to the 103. If the 102 has a little to much crispness for the particular vocalist a simple EQ roll off around 6000 Hz takes it more along the lines of the 103. I'll also state that I believe the 102 sounds more like a 47 than the 103 does.

    The TLM 170 is my favorite mic. I would take it over a U87 or even classic mics like the U47. It's multi-pattern, so it's more practical. I like the 103, I own a pair, but it doesn't always work for every voice or instrument. The 170 does.

    • @jeffreyjbyron
      @jeffreyjbyron 14 дней назад

      @@JoeyDeNoble-po1fi 107 will be the most versatile sounding, I think. The 102 is nice because it can get into small spaces, and isn't in the way. They will all sound great on anything. The bigger the capsule, the more proximity effect--this is either a good or bad thing depending on what you are doing.
      If you can find a TLM170, it's my all time favorite mic.

    From a person, who haved work with tons of high end microphones, i can guaratee yall, that 102 is the winner, is the more sensitive of them all, with a really nice highs, clarity and crispy, that the others dont have, with the 3 mics at the same distance, the 102 have less end, but its more sensitive to the proximity effect, if you get a little closer to the 102, you get a really nice low and a really good crispy on the high's, and personally, i think its easier (at least for me), to give more warmth to the 102 with EQ, compared to trying make the 103 or 107 more crispy.
    If you dont want to spend the time and the effort working on the 102, get the 103, its the more balanced of them all, and its "idiot proof".

I’m sure on their own you wouldn’t even know which is which. I think the 170 is a more flat mic from the 107 and the u87ai has a slight presence boost to help vocals cut through the mix. I do voice over work, so the 170 has a flat prequency response that can be eq’d to taste very easily after; but since I’m thinking of building a new house and a dedicated vocal studio in the future, I think the u87ai is more “marketable” for me in that regard.

    Talk in terms of wider vocal without eq, this video does not show the total capability of any of these tlm's.
    If you really wanna know, try with individual with lower pitch ( that's when one differs from other actually), In this video you can hardly notice anything.
    TLM 103 is actually the best of all, for studios you can have people with wide vocal range, not specific to one individual. So you have a better freq range. 107 is good looking mic I can give but 102 is seriously not in the same league, better you go with Rode N1 rather than 102

      U should’ve done more research. 102 has like a 12db self noise while tlm is extremely quiet as its only 7db self noise.
      U will hear cars driving passed & all that. But that’s why room acoustics & treatment is so important. If u haven’t invested in that, then going for higher end mics might actually make your recordings worst because every little noise will be captured with such detail

    The TLM 170 is actually the best mic Neumann ever made. Thanks for NOT including it. The TLM 170 R was the first microphone with the now so successful fet-100 technology. It offers balanced, transformerless signal decoupling and highest controllability with extremely low inherent-noise. It’s more expensive but worth every penny.

      Can’t tell if you’re happy he didn’t include it(obviously because the 170 is mad pricey!) or because you’re actually bummed out the dude didn’t have the cash to get one because it’s mad pricey ….

      I would have preferred if he included the TLM 193 in the comparison. It is the cardioid only TLM 170 for half the price which makes it much more comparable to the 102 and 103.

      @@Currywurst-zo8oo don’t think it would sound the same as the 170 because the 170 is a dual membrane capsule while the 193 is single,,,, single and dual do sound quite a bit different, I prefer single ( with mics under $1500 though) , top dollar mics they are all phenomenal, in this guys review I totally prefer the 107 it’s almost like the 103 without the harsh highs, and the 102 with the full lowend

    • @Currywurst-zo8oo
      @Currywurst-zo8oo 2 года назад

      @@rylandweet7750Are you sure that the TLM 193 only has a single diaphragm? Manufactures today just use dual diaphagms for some of their microphones because they are easier to tune that way. Another example would be the cardioid only AT 4040.
      They might not be identical but when you use the TLM 170 in cardioid mode they sound basically the same.
      A lot of people say that the 170 is simply a better 107 so I was very curious how the 193 fairs against other cardioid only mics like the 103.

      @rylandweet7750 2 года назад +1

      @@Currywurst-zo8oo, TLM 193 uses a dual-diaphragm capsule but is a cardioid-only microphone. Only its front diaphragm is connected electrically while the rear diaphragm is just a passive element of the acoustical design, didn’t think it was but yep it sure is!
      The at4040 is single. I replace them all the time actually, but both the 193 and 4040 are edge terminated
