- Greetings! Welcome back to This is Your Life and here I present you with the sixth and last instalment of the series for this year. For this episode, we’re staying with the Bluebell theme and looking at another stalwart of the railway’s early years. She’s an engine of whom very little is original but that doesn’t detract from her importance, if anything it adds to it. She’s rubbed shoulders with some of the most important names in the heritage railway world and having been dormant for almost a decade, she is set to return at the end of the decade. The locomotive in question - GWR Dukedog ‘Earl of Berkeley’.
Update on the Earl - Sunday 23 April 2023.
The Bluebell recently wheeled the Old Dear out of her retirement home for a photoshoot with visiting Hall, 6989. Looking in reasonable external condition, the BR said that the Earl will return in the ‘not-too-distant’ future. Take from that what you will.
All credits for music and motion pictures are listed below. I make nothing via their use in this film.
• Kevin MacLeod - Brande... - Kevin MacLeod - Brandenburg Concerto No. 4
• Driving and Firing - T... - David Moyle - Driving and Firing The Western Engines
• 'Operation Dukedog' 19... - Bluebell Railway - Operation Dukedog
• Dukedog 9017 aka 'Earl... - DenisG Lewis - Earl of Berkeley at the Llangollen Railway 2009 Spring Gala
And that, as they say, is that. This year has been good for this series, certainly much better than last year’s now I’ve found a consistent style. This is Your Life will hopefully return in the new year so if you have any suggestions please feel free to let me know in the comments below and I’ll see what I can do. In the meantime, thank you viewers for listening to me ramble on for a combined three hours about various locomotives and railways. It means a lot to me that these videos are enjoyed. I haven’t got any more big videos planned for the rest of the year so this may well be the last one for 2022. In which case, thank you all again for joining me for the ride. All the best to you all.
Amendment Wed 20 Sep 2023 - The news has now come that 488 will swap places with 9017 in the overhaul queue after ‘Beachy Head’ has been finished.
Stay Safe, Stay Warm & Stay Tuned!
Alex.
There's my sweetheart hope to see you in Steam soon Earl of Berkeley you will always stay my favourite locomotive even if I find another one I like you still be my favourite and I like to call her bulldog
What a wonderful video. Thanks for the great production and calm and relaxed narration 😊
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it.
Thought 9017 would be a good one to end the year on just because of how interesting she is.
Thanks very much for watching - Alex.
I haven't heard the term "hobble-de-hoy" in half a century.
Mr. Collett had a great sense of humour!
As a fan of all things GWR I loved this, thank you
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.
Stay Safe & Stay Tuned - Alex.
Great video! Really enjoyed this one.
Thanks very much, Oliver. The series will, hopefully, return next year.

Excellent.
Thanks very much.

Such a shame that the old dear is now once again awaiting a space in the overhaul queue. Lets hope that a space can be found in house or an external contract awarded so that she can plug the gap in medium sized locos after 65 retires. It would be a shame if she had to wait for 32424, 928, 323, 96, 27, 92240, 84030, 488 and 1618 to return to traffic before work could begin.
Agreed, she’s a long way down the list. Given that the BR are focusing on the Atlantic, new build tank and Victorian Trio immediately, it’ll be a long while before we see 9017 in action again. Shame really as, as you say, she’d be ideal after 65 bows out.
Cheers and stay safe - Alex.
@@greatwesternproductions2857 Maybe the plan is for 263 and 84030 to replace 65. They are all Class 2s, though an operational small tender engine will be a gap in the fleet.
@@mcollier4566 That sounds possible, retire 65 for a while and run the new builds in. Would make sense to have a small tender loco too, add a bit of variety amongst all the tanks.
I like the honest bit about this loco being an amalgamation of different bits. It has a familiar ring to it. The Brandenburg concerto in the background is also very pleasant. It makes a big change, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed this one, definitely one of my favourites from last year. Shame we won’t see 9017 for a while though.
Cheers and stay safe - Alex.
A professional production, engaging, and informative, sadly lacking in so many videos out there.
Why thank you, that’s very kind. Yes, I do my best with these episodes and I think, after three years, I’ve found my stride now.
Glad you enjoyed the film. We won’t be seeing 9017 for a fair few years yet sadly as 488 has taken its place in the overhaul queue.
Thanks very much for watching. Stay Safe & Stay Tuned - Alex.

Cracking bibliography on the Dukedog class , I
I have the Bachmann Earl of Berkeley on my GWR layout ! 🚂
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it.
Ah, that’s nice. Been looking for one but they’re always out of stock. Testament to their popularity I suppose.

My special needs son says that Earl of Berkeley looks a lot like City of Truro.
It does indeed, both have outside frames.
City of Truro is 36 years older than Earl of Berkeley although some parts from 9017 date back to 1899 so in that respect, she’s the older model.
Cheers and stay safe - Alex.
@@greatwesternproductions2857 Thank you for your reply we appreciate it and are glad you agree 👍God bless you 🙏✡😇🤴👼🐏🐑🕊🥀🔥✝️
Wasn’t there a GWR 4-4-0 stored on Wellington shed sometime around the 50s?
The only example of a Duke, Bulldog or Dukedog at Wellington that I can find is of Bulldog No. 3443 of 1903 being withdrawn there in Nov 1935. Shrewsbury seems to be more active in terms of residents/withdrawals. Two examples being Duke 3283 of 1897 being struck off at Shrewsbury in Dec ‘49 and Dukedog 3204 of 1936 being condemned in July ‘60. I think 3443 might be the one you’re thinking of.
Thanks for watching - Alex.
The then directors were on spectacular salaries. To put it mildly.
But the bluebell railway was already building a brand-new locomotive back from the dead locomotives in question SE&CR E class ! don’t believe me look at the wiki !
Indeed, you are quite correct. From my research, I was led to believe that the BR’s plan is to divide their time and resources between 9017 and 516. We shall see what happens.
Thanks very much for watching - Alex.
no longer correct Bluebell are not doing a secr e class now going to overhaul 488 and 96
I rather enjoyed the outro music does it have a name?
I’m not sure that it does, I’ve always just called it The Bluebell Line song. It was used again in Fred Dinenage’s program which I highly recommend.
Cheers and stay safe - Alex.
What’s the name of the song you played at the end of the video I like it
That’s from this delightful film… ruclips.net/video/O7jxL7y93Sc/видео.htmlsi=gvwLw5JhdyKBnK7k
Also featured in Fred Dineage’s film.
